The Jake Fox Challenge

Ok here is my personal way to see who truly believes in Fox, and who is just flinging poop around the room.  I believe there are more who are just using the trade as a reason to bash Hendry, and be negative about Lou.  Some others never need a reason to fling poop around, and its a life style for them.  I am curious to see how many takers of this there are.

I will donate $10 to Derrek Lee's Project 3000 IF Jake Fox hits 25+ HR's next season for each person who is willing to donate $25 if Fox hits 24 or less.

If 10 people say they are in, then my bill is $100, each of them are in for $25

If 20 people say they are in, then my bill is $200, each of them are in for $25

and so on.

I wait the Foxes to respond.

All winnings are to be donated direct, none passing from person to person, do not misunderstand the entire thought here.

Al, I respect that this is your site, and if you feel that this is not acceptable, I apologize in advance, and you are welcome to delete if you feel the need.

I will donate

$10.00 if Jake Fox hits 25 homeruns, and I will donate $5.00 for each homerun over 25.

Signed, sealed and delivered.

If this is allowed to carry on

since it’s a good cause, I’m in for $100 if Fox hits 25. Hell, its such a good cause, I’ll give $100 if Lee hits 30.

Its funny, you spend most of your life gripping a baseball. And in the end, its almost always the other way around.

This is fine with me.

I did fix the spelling of “challenge”, though.

I am not saying he is great, but its funny to watch you put him down for no reason.

I hope he hits 25 HR. If he gets the playing time he probably will.

He seems to get the most negative posts from people like you and Drew when compared to some of the lazy players on the Cubs. Like you feel the need to defend the real problems on this team.

The bottom line is that Fox was a nice player last year that was benched for Bobby Scales and there was no explanation given. He was mismanaged by a manager that did not seem to care, while running out the same crap day after day. Maybe if people were held accountable on this team players like Soriano, Bradley, Soto, and Zambrano wouldn’t feel like they can get away with loafing. Fox played and talked like most fans think ballplayers should behave. That is why there is such a reaction.

This thread is pretty odd. You have a contest based on a hope that a player fails. You, Tim do not have to pay if you get your way and he does not hit the HR’s. Its a good cause but how bout a MB challenge. Maybe it can be based on-

injuries,
fights,
media blowups,
suspensions,
the word “racism” (This could be a drinking game)

How many of each will happen.

People liked Fox and are sorry to see him go because all that crap does not come with him.

i am not anti Jake

I wish him well, I just have no confidence in him for the long term, as he was in the Cubs org for 7 seasons, and what has he proven? (03-09).

ANd i have to ask, are you going to put your money where your mouth is about Fox as I have asked, or will you keep flinging poop without backing yourself up?

MB challance, fine I am game

ONCE we know where he is playing. Fox has a new home, where some (like you) believe he is going to show his God like abilities now that he is gone from Wrigley.

I hope MB is in the AL so I can make one where it is head to head between DH’s Fox and MB in regards to offensive line.

I said I think he will hit 25 hrs. Is that God Like?

I would never put money anywhere based on something you and your ilk came up with.

I would do it on my own.

I consider you and Drew the same so I ask….he said Bradley (and Soriano) were not DH’s….You say he will DH. Do you think he is not a good fielder? What would keep him off the field? Maybe one of the many reasons I provided above.

Also, what is a challance?

I believe Al had to fix your 1st grade spelling issues earlier….

by TJ11 on Dec 6, 2009 1:19 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

everyone here knows I have typos, it is part of my flare

now, MB is better hitter over all than Fox, and MB is a MLB Proven Hitter….Fox is a AAAA Player and his 6 minor league seasons after college prove that. Most that come out of college and are successful in MLB make the pros much sooner than Fox has. I agree Soriano and Bradley are not the strongest defenders, but they both are better than Fox, which is not say much, kinda like being the tallest midget.

You came out about how good Fox is, now you are backing away from a chance to step up when called out. Shows why you were talking so much, and how fast you back down.

I am not wishing him to fail, I am being realistic in his skill set. He cannot hit breaking pitches with any consistancy, and that is why he will not have a great offensive performance in Oakland, and will be back in the minors for most of 2010 IMHO.

Thanks for considering me and Drew the same, Drew is a good cat IMO.

What kept MB on the field over Fox, I can think of about $6 Million Reasons…..you play the one you are paying too often in sports. I do not agree but that is fact. MB is also a better player all around than Fox. MB is also a proven major league player, Fox has not been able to establish himself when given the chance, and no fault to Lou or anyone else, that is on Fox. When given chances, he doesnt take full advantage.

Fox can catch a ball without jumping

And as bad as Fox is in LF he still takes better routes and isn’t terrified of the wall.

Yes Sori has a gun, but it does not do him all that good when he is always chasing after balls that should have been caught.

by TJ11 on Dec 6, 2009 9:32 PM CST up reply actions

thats why Fox was described by scouts as having a glove

one step short of hirrible, and Sorinao has been credited for being one of the best arms in LF. There was a link last season posted here about how horrible Fox is at defense, so unlike you I am using actual facts.

by Cubbie-Tim on Dec 6, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions

Bradley

is a plus defender. So is Soriano. Obviously 2009 was an off year for both. Nevertheless, numbers don’t lie.

Milton Bradley has a career UZR of 25.6. Alfonso Soriano has a career UZR in the OF of 19.4. Jake Fox has an UZR in the OF of -5.0. Now, granted, it’s a small sample size for Jake, but still, the difference is significant.

Forget all that other stuff. I gotta believe.

by drewishdrewid on Dec 6, 2009 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

Bradley hasn't been a plus defender since before his ACL reconstruction.

He played 20 games worth of decent OF in 2008, and 109 games worth of pretty bad OF in 2009. Maybe he’ll be better this year, another year removed from the knee injury. Or maybe it’s age. I don’t know.

I do know that Soriano is a pretty awful OF in every respect but one – on any given day, he’s probably not in the top 10 defensive LF in the ballpark, if you’re counting players, coaches and fans. He was really bad last year, and the stats bore that out.

MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown

by D98 on Dec 6, 2009 11:36 PM CST up reply actions

Bradley is a plus defender. So is Soriano-From Drew

really????

Who here besides Tim and Drew would like a fly ball hit to Soriano in the 9th inning of a tie game?

Not many. How many times can he drop a fly before you see this.

He should be taken out for defense. Bradley is slightly better as long as his head is in the game, but there was no reason for Sori to be in there when Reed Johnson was sitting on the bench late in games.

by TJ11 on Dec 7, 2009 8:19 AM CST up reply actions

reality check

stop putting words in my mouth. I have never said I liked Soriano’s or MB’s defense. I said that they are better than Fox, and said that it was the same as being the tallest midget.

Reed was not sitting on the bench late in games when healthy, again fact checking is not your stong point so far, as you continue to make up facts.

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out

by Cubbie-Tim on Dec 7, 2009 8:38 AM CST up reply actions

He was on the bench many times late in games.

Why don’t you check facts. Early in the season Gathwright was there and he was a better fielder and he sat as well.

The year before Pie would sit and watch Sori misplay balls late games.

Lou does not know how to use his bench.

So you disagree with Drew that Soriano is a good fielder? Yes or no?

by TJ11 on Dec 7, 2009 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

I have said

he is better than Fox, which seems to be the print you continue to miss. Why are you having a problem understanding that. And IIRC Reed usually sub’d into CF and RF, Soriano is in LF.

What does 2007 or 2008 Pie have to do with 2009 Fox? You continue to look for reasons that make your argument thinner each time

TJ11

I completely agree with you. We have guys on here defending Bradley as being a better player, when Fox had one less homer and more RBI’s in half the at bats. He also could play more than one position adequately. He wasn’t Brooks Robinson, but he’d do whatever he was told to do. Can you imagine if Fox had thrown the ball into the stands? We’d never hear the end of it from some of these guys.

It’s funny, reading how excited the A’s are to get him. They are already saying that they are going to possibly platoon him with Brett Wallace (who came over in the Holliday trade) at 3B and that he’ll see time at 1B, OF, DH, and at catcher. This is coming from a team that actually has good management, on and off the field. They know talent when they see it.

Fox has shown that he is a good weapon off the bench and great spot starter if someone goes down. If given an opportunity to play, he could have shown what he could do over the course of a season. Bradley should have been sat down because of his antics months ago, at which time he (and other guys like Hoffpauir) could have gotten a legitimate shot to show what they could do. Guys coming up from the minor leagues cannot improve if they bat once or twice a week.

Also, the comment about guys making the money having to play is ridiculous. Have these guys ever heard of Jim Leyland and Magglio Ordonez? Now that’s how to manage a baseball team. You play the guys who are hitting, no matter who they are. If the other guys don’t like it, they can either try harder or retire. Then we can use their money on players who deserve it.

What some Cubs fans are upset about is that he sat in the minors while guys like Ryan Freel played 3B while hitting .130, and then he sat on the bench, sometimes batting once or twice a week during September (when Soriano had gone down and we needed power in the line-up) while Bobby Scales played LF every day. He wouldn’t even give Hoffpauir a shot in LF either. Hoffpauir’s another player that I always see coming up to the wall and signing autographs for kids while taking every at bat seriously, and not for granted. The management decisions were very confusing, especially down the stretch when the Cubs needed to win ballgames.

Some Cubs fans also understand that he could get more playing time in the AL, however, that the Cubs should have gotten more for him. All of this “high ceiling” talk in regards to the players we got is baseless and is just an excuse to rip Fox.

It’s funny to me as well, that someone would create a post just to rip a player that did nothing but play hard and show a good attitude. Most players would have been insulted by the way he was benched this year for no apparent reason, however, it never seemed to disrupt his play at all. He seemed to play hard when he got his (rare) opportunities.

So TJ11, I wouldn’t worry about these guys who apparently have seething hatred for Fox while defending guys like Bradley. They are the same kinds of guys that you hear sitting around you at Wrigley Field ranting throughout the entire game while making inaccurate comments about the players’ names on the field, or about recent MLB transactions/trade rumors. Time will prove all of them (and Hendry) wrong about players like Fox.
