OT: Northwestern, Auburn invited to the Outback Bowl

118_medium

via images.outbackbowl.com

Quarterback Mike Kafka will lead the Wildcats against the Auburn Tigers on New Year's Day in Tampa. Northwestern is seeking its first bowl win since the 1949 Rose Bowl and also will play the Tigers for the second straight season. (In the 2008 Alamo Bowl, NU fell in overtime to the Missouri Tigers.)

Last year, the Cats finished with a better record than Iowa and won the head-to-head matchup, but the team was still leapfrogged by the Hawkeyes for the Outback. This season, Wisconsin finished with one more victory but it's Northwestern's turn to jump, possibly based on the Wildcats victory over Wisconsin at Ryan Field in the final game of the regular season.  The 2000 co-conference champion Cats were also passed over by the Outback.

This will be the first New Year's Day bowl appearance for NU since 1997, when Citrus Bowl MVP Peyton Manning completed 27 of 39 passes for 408 yards and four TDs in a 48-28 Tennessee win.  It'll be Northwestern's first-ever appearance in the Outback Bowl.  And finally, it will be the first meeting in history between the two opponents.

Can't help but be more than a little suspicious about this.

Rumor has been that the Fiesta bowl WANTED Iowa. And the team had already sold its allotment of tickets, no matter the game. So why the sudden change?

My theory… the BCS powers wanted the non-BCS crashers to play each other, giving them the BCS game they deserve while not risking embarrassing any of the major teams / conferences. That way, they will emerge from the whole thing getting what they “deserve”, but won’t have a way be legitimized, as the BCS conferences can continue to beat the “Yeah, but they never beat anybody good!” argument in to the ground every time they are brought up.

While i’m psyched for my Hawkeyes, i’m with Worf above. The whole thing stinks.

I think your theory is right...

if Fiesta Bowl wanted Iowa, they could have had them.

I believe Sugar Bowl had first pick by virtue of losing Alabama to the championship game. So no big surprise, they took Florida, keeping the SEC ties. Fiesta Bowl went next and could have taken Iowa. Since Ga. Tech was slotted for the Orange Bowl (ACC tie-in), that would have forced TCU and Boise St to NOT play each other, i.e. they’d be playing against the Big Boys.

Interesting how Cincy jumped ahead of TCU in the final poll as well. Under the Nebraska-beating-Texas scenario, I predicted that would happen seeing as how the last thing the BCS Powers would want is a non-BCS school (TCU) getting into the title game.

The whole thing is crooked as can be. They should either keep the rankings as they are and just pair them up at the end of the season – 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, 5 vs 6, 7 vs 8, and 9 vs 10. Rotate the bowls so it evens out. After all, if the BCS is the best way to rank the teams, then this would produce the best games, right?

Obviously bowl and conference politics would never let this happen, so the BCS should reduce their scope and focus only on the championship game. Keep their rankings and algorithms, but at the end of the year, the only thing it’s used for is to match up #1 vs #2 in the championship game. All the rest of the bowls, pick who they want. Since the championship game is now a completely separate bowl game, it should be no skin off of any other bowl’s back. Sure it’d be chaos but at least it’d be above the board chaos.

I want a playoff.

I see no reason that this can’t happen. Everybody laments the loss of the “bowl system” when they fight it, but really, there is no system. Everything is politics and corporate sponsors and conference shenanigans. If you wanted to keep some part of the history, just name certain games (the final four) after the BCS bowls, and the round of eight after some of the second tier bowls, and let the rest fight it out for whoever didn’t get in to a tournament in a sort of NIT for football.

What other arguments are there against it? Money? Hogwash… the best teams would be playing 2 or 3 extra times! Time? Start it when the bowls would traditionally begin… if you had a 16 team playoff starting the same day bowl season begins this season (the 19th), you could have the round of 8 on or around the 26th, the round of four on or around the 2nd, and the national championship on the 9th (two days after the currently scheduled game, and in time for the students to get back for class at most schools).

There is no reason for this.

This may be one of the best proposals for a future playoff I've seen.

[link] and I’m in the same boat as you. A playoff needs to happen – their is no logical reason (other than the money the BCS wants to protect) for there not to be a playoff.

Rhodes does deserve credit too, but you can’t rebuild a program like IS in one or two years. Hopefully it will work out well for both teams (btw Rhodes was DC at Auburn last year). Chizik was the D coordinator at Auburn when they went undefeated in 2004. He did a pretty good job at Auburn this year too. It’s not that surprising to Auburn fans.

There’s no other way to say this, but Northwestern is the bottom tier of Big 10 teams. Even though they beat Bucky, still couldn’t believe NW was chosen over UW for the Outback.

I’ve been to the Outback a few years ago with Bucky, it’s a great game, and Tampa is real fun. Enjoy.

Rumor has it Phoenix’s people had some beef with Iowa because it was assumed that the Iowans already down there (we call them snow birds… there are TONS of old people from Iowa who travel south for the winter every year) would end up with a lot of the tickets, and that would mean lower revenue for the area vs a team without a built in base of fans in the area (like… TCU??).

Not disagreeing, but...

I’d rather play a good Miami team than a mediocre Auburn team. Plus, the game is a prime-time night game as opposed to a 10 am New Years game. If it’s not a BCS bowl, the name isn’t nearly as important to me as the competition we’re getting. UW/Miami has to be one of the very best non-BCS match ups out there. Plus, it can only help our exposure/recruiting in Florida if we have a good showing.

I'm a homer but...

mediocre Auburn team, good Miami team? I’m not one of these SEC is the best ever kind of people, but the ACC was garbage this year, really, really, really bad. So Auburn who has zero depth and very little talent on defense and the OL is mediocre after managing to win 7 games, beat WVU, beat tennessee, beat Ole Miss, and gave the best team in the country all they wanted? Inconsistent maybe, lacking depth, but I’ll disagree that Auburn is mediocre

by AUCub on Dec 7, 2009 11:12 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Fair enough..

….but I don’t think an “inconsistent” Auburn team can beat Northwestern. Honestly, if you took away the names of these two teams, and looked just at A) their stats, and B) who they beat, Northwestern would be an 8 point favorite in this game instead of Auburn.

Oh well, life as a Northwestern fan — constantly fighting for respect. It’s not as bad to get no respect from SEC country….but when locals/local media praises Illinois despite have ONE winning season in the past 8 years, but forecasts Northwestern to finish at the bottom of the Big Ten every year (despite the fact that NU has won 3 Big Ten titles since the league expanded to 11 teams in 1993 — the same number as Wisconsin and Penn State, and less only than Michigan and Ohio State)….well, it gets annoying.

The fact of the matter is, Illinois is the losing program in football…..and if you’re a college football fan in Illinois looking for a local team to support, you’re better off going with Northwestern (or, I suppose, NIU) than the Illini.

by Chadnudj on Dec 7, 2009 11:38 PM CST up reply actions

8 Point favorite?

not so sure about that, and I don’t see any wins on Northwestern’s schedule that are more impressive than anything Auburn did. To be fair, Iowa would be considered a really good win, but I’m not so sure how good the hawkeyes really are personally. I say that with the caveat that college football as a whole is pretty poor this year, IMO. Auburn’s wins over WVU, tennessee, Ole Miss are comparable to anyone NU has beaten this year. I would set the line as a push if I just looked at the schedules. I’m not sure what NU’s depth and injury situation is like, but Auburn will GREATLY benefit from a month off. We played Alabama with 2 real linebackers basically, in addition to a true freshman who hadn’t played until the georgia game, the guy was 3rd string. Regardless we still held Ingram, who will likely win the heisman, to 30 yards on 16 carries. As far as I’m concerned the game could go either way. Look forward to meeting nice NU folks down in Tampa though, I’ll be wearing my Cubs hat

by AUCub on Dec 8, 2009 12:33 AM CST up reply actions

I'll see you down there.

While Auburn may benefit from a month off, Northwestern SURELY will, particularly on defense, where it has had injury problems ALL season long. NU started 20 different players on defense ALONE due to injuries, including 9 different players in its secondary — at one point, we STARTED a walk-on true freshman at CB….and going into the season, people were predicting NU’s defense to be one of the Big Ten’s best (they still finished in the top half of the Big Ten despite all the injuries).

NU will have Brendan Smith back healthy at safety (a game-changer who hits hard and gets quite a few picks, plus is a huge help in special teams — he missed a bunch of games this season), a fully healthy Sherrick McManis (who turned around a number of games this year with picks, but was still struggling with a sore hamstring), and another month of practice and rest for Corey Wootton (who tore his ACL in the Alamo Bowl last year and only started coming back into form late this season, when he started to show signs again of being a first-round caliber draft pick at DE).

by Chadnudj on Dec 8, 2009 9:33 AM CST up reply actions

Auburn is a 7.5 point favorite right now

Link I think that is about right. I have always liked NU so I don’t really want to talk trash about them. But I think Auburn will beat them. They should have everyone back to full speed by then too which helps with the depth problem.

by LT on Dec 8, 2009 1:29 PM CST up reply actions

That seems a bit high to me

I wouldn’t take that, just because Auburn’s D hasn’t been too spectacular this year. They’ve had some good moments, mostly coming when we had 3 real SEC caliber linebackers (of course that was it, those guys had to play all the snaps, no depth as already mentioned), but overall I wouldn’t trust that line. ESPECIALLY with Auburn having a new coach, and you don’t really know how he is gonna handle the bowl game situation. I’m sure we are taking it seriously, but you never know when you haul college kids off to some new place for a week.

by AUCub on Dec 8, 2009 7:30 PM CST up reply actions

That's one crazy definition of "bottom tier" you have. Unfortunately, a lot of people aren't paying attention to what's really happened on the field and off.

So the Outback picked the Big Ten #4 instead of the Big Ten #5 (head-to-head victory wins tiebreaker), and people are up-in-arms? Northwestern beat Wisconsin. Running up the score against a pathetic Hawaii team to get a meaningless ninth win isn’t enough to make up for a head-to-head loss. Last year, NU was 9-3 but got passed over for the same bowl by an 8-4 Iowa that had lost to the Wildcats. For once, the bowl actually got one right this season.

Final 2009 Big Ten Standings
1. Ohio St. 7-1
2. Iowa 6-2 (lost to Northwestern, at home)
3. Penn State 6-2
>> 4. Northwestern 5-3
>> 5. Wisconsin 5-3 (lost to Northwestern)
6. Michigan State 4-4
7. Purdue 4-4
8. Minnesota 3-5
9. Illinois 2-6
10. Michigan 1-7
11. Indiana 1-7

2008
1. Penn State 7-1
2. Ohio State 7-1
3. Michigan State 6-2
>> 4. Northwestern 5-3
5. Iowa 5-3 (lost to Northwestern, at home, again)
6. Minnesota 3-5
>> 7. Wisconsin 3-5
8. Illinois 3-5
9. Purdue 2-6
10. Michigan 2-6
11. Indiana 1-7
>> Which of the two teams was in the bottom tier? Hint: It’s not Northwestern.

In the Big Ten Conference, 2007-2009
“Bottom Tier” Northwestern 13-11
“Upper Tier” Wisconsin 13-11

If you want to argue that Northwestern isn’t as well-known, that’s fine, but to call a team “bottom tier” that just finished ahead of you two seasons in a row and has the exact same record as your team over the last three seasons is absurd.

The Wildcats aren’t just going up against opponents on the field every Saturday, they’re battling against the outdated and false perception that Northwestern isn’t a legitimate football program.

P.S. We’re about to graduate 100% of our senior class to boot.

Oh com'on, stop taking this crap so seriously.

Now I have to spend four minutes proving this all wrong.

Northwestern is a bottom tier Big 10 football team. Pat Fitzgerald has done an excellent job and has the team headed in the right direction. However, when NU starts getting into more bowl games (UW has been to more bowl games in the last decade than NU has been to in its 125+ year inception), grabbing some player awards, and getting in the national spotlight a bit more, then I’ll call them what they are: bottom tier of the Big 10. Here’s my tiers, off nothing more than the last few decade or so of successes:

Bottom

Indiana
Minnesota
Illinois
Purdue
Northwestern

Middle

Michigan State
Michigan
Iowa
Wisconsin

Top

Penn State
Ohio State

First off, UW didn’t “run up” the score against Hawaii; they beat the shit out of a bad team. UW and NU played the same number of non-cons, but you already knew that, right? And UW won their 4; NU lost to ’Cuse, which is a joke considering ’Cuse quarterbacked a Duke point guard and won four games total this year.

Second, like I said in my first post, I am in shock that NU was chosen over UW. Bowls are under no obligation to select certain teams (like Big 10 #4 over #5). It is common to see teams with worse records (or losing head-to-head) selected because they travel well and have large fan bases. Wisconsin not only had more victories (and less losses) than Northwestern, it has one of the largest fan bases of any college in the country.

Third, Wisconsin is a better-tiered team than Northwestern simply because they produce better results. Lee Evans? Joe Thomas, the 2nd pick in the draft two years ago? Owen Daniels? Jim Leonard? Chris Chambers? Who’s NU’s best? I can only name Sutton or Harris…and I dunno if they even start.

I’m glad to see NU doing well; they beat an unbeaten Iowa team and probably cost Wisconsin the Capital One Bowl. Pat is a great coach and I hope you don’t lose him to a better program. Good luck in the Outback; I went in 2004 against Georgia and was f-ing drunk as a skunk.

Dan

by dtpollitt on Dec 8, 2009 9:24 PM CST reply actions

Really? My argument is Northwestern has left the bottom tier in the last decade, I just finished making the case to get over the preconceived notions from the past, and your response is to point to the last 125 years?

That’s convenient. For you.

And right, I’m sure Wisconsin really needed those 17 points in the fourth quarter to put it away against Hawaii.

Talking tiers on your own perception of the programs is one thing. But you might need to get caught up with what’s really going on, on the field, in the Big Ten and the rest of the country. The “big-name” schools aren’t necessarily the most talented anymore. (See: Notre Dame) I’d rank them like this, based on how they actually perform on the field, which is all that matters.

Top Echelon: Ohio State. No one else is there yet.

Middle to Upper: Penn State, Iowa, Northwestern, Wisconsin. I firmly believe any of those teams can beat the other 3 on any given Saturday. Before you point to PSU-NU this year, keep in mind NU was dominating in the first half until Mike Kafka got injured. Paterno, afterward: “Our halftime adjustment was their quarterback got hurt.”

Tweeners: Michigan State (losing Decker really hurt them in the last half of the season)

Lower: Minnesota (great new stadium though), Indiana, Illinois (from Rose Bowl to no bowl), Purdue (perplexing the way they threaten yet collapse), Michigan

By the way, recruits have never been more excited about the Northwestern program than they are now. These young athletes really identify with a young, successful, passionate head coach like Fitz. NU is gaining momentum and stature amongst the future players of the sport at a rapid pace.

If Wisconsin wanted the Outback Bowl, maybe they should have beaten their primary competition for it. But they didn’t. So NU got the bid instead. I really don’t get why Wisconsin fans are so upset about this. Last year, NU had a better record AND beat Iowa head-to-head. But Iowa got the bowl. If that were the case this year, with Wisconsin in our place, I would completely agree with you that you got jobbed. However. This year, NU beat Wisconsin, finished with the exact same conference record, and Wisconsin happened to get a cupcake for their last game of the season, and somehow we’re supposed to throw away the rest of the ledger because you beat Hawaii? Don’t make me laugh. If they wanted the bowl that badly, maybe they should have taken care of business in Evanston, when the bowl assignments were starting to lineup and this looked like a real possibility. But they didn’t. We did.

It’s interesting that you point to players who aren’t there anymore when you say “produce” better results. Not produced, but produce. Present tense. So here we go again. Fact: NU finished ahead of Wisconsin in the Big Ten this season. Fact: NU finished ahead of Wisconsin last season. Fact: Northwestern beat Wisconsin, head-to-head, THIS season. Lee Evans? Seriously? Sutton? Harris? How about Mike Kafka? Corey Wootton? Sherrick McManis? All three have good chances at pro careers. But if you insist on the past, how about starting DT Luis Castillo of the Chargers? Super Bowl champions Trai Essex (Pittsburgh) and Barry Cofield (Giants)? Bears starting linebacker Nick Roach? Texans LB Kevin Bentley, Jets CB Marquice Cole, Chiefs OT Ikechuku Ndukwe, Saints OT Zach Strief, Cardinals RB Jason Wright? Sure, Wisconsin has produced more over the years. No one is arguing otherwise. The point is, NU has spent most of the last 15 years radically changing their program and we’re already seeing the results, whether you acknowledge it or not.

That said, I hope Wisconsin DESTROYS their opponent in their bowl. I’m really enjoying this rivalry developing between Northwestern and Wisconsin. Both teams always give each other a great game, and I think that’s good for both the conference and these two outstanding institutions. And thanks for the compliments on Pat Fitzgerald. I’ve met with him and interviewed him and he’s a class act, we’re proud to have him and I can’t see him leaving for anything or anybody. He truly loves Northwestern with all his heart. Speaking of player awards, he was the first player in college football history to win both the Nagurski and Bednarik back-to-back.

Wisconsin in 2010 is going to be one of the top two 2 teams in the conference.

We have the Big 10 Offensive Player of the Year, a great young core of linebackers, and some good linemen, too.

I’ve literally heard of 2 of the guys you just mentioned in the NFL.

Go Bucky.

I write about both

Northwestern and Wisconsin here on SBN…. I can say that I don’t think Wisconsin will be one of the top 2 teams, but top 3 is not out of the question and top 4 is almost a certainty if they stay healthy. Assuming John Clay doesn’t jump ship for the NFL absurdly early. he’ll be back as will Tolzien. Phillips hasn’t looked that impressive this year, but I think as he matures he’ll be able to take over from Tolzien in 2011/2012. The Badgers great strength is that the young D is returning in it entirety and they’ve already exceeded my expectations this year. I don’t think 2010 is the pinnacle year for Bucky… I’m really targeting 2011 depending on who doesn’t leave for the NFL.

As for Northwestern, they’re also on the upswing. The big name victories this year (and if we can get one, a bowl victory) will immensely help their recruiting. Losing Kafka isn’t going to be fun, but Persa may be able to fill his shoes. During pre-season this year I was encouraged by Kafka working on his throwing extensively… and it’s clearly paid off. If Persa can do something similar in the off-season, he may be able to fill Kafka’s shoes…

NU also has a developing RB core even despite being a mostly spread team. Arby Fields and Scott Concannon will both be back, and that should help… I look for Northwestern (barring any significant injuries) to finish around where they did this year in the Big 10, higher if Persa can develop his throwing.

Wait...

… Iowa, who has beat Penn State two years running, is a tier below them?

Are these rankings current? If we are reaching back to 2007, shouldn’t Michigan be a top tier team, as they ended the year in the top twenty and played in the rose bowl?

If you are doing these as of today, you can’t possibly place Penn State above Iowa. I’d do this:

Bottom

Indiana
Minnesota
Purdue
Northwestern

Middle

Illinois
Michigan State
Michigan
Iowa
Wisconsin
Penn State

Top

Ohio State

If you want to move any one of the Iowa / Wesconsin / Penn St group up a tier, you’d have to take the others (although you could probably justify leaving Wisconsin down). And Illinois played in the Rose Bowl in 2008… i’m not sure they justify bottom tier status so quickly as long as Michigan State is considered middle tier.

Does anyone need tickets to the game?

I bought 4 before they went on sale and then a trip to CO came up that I couldn’t pass. I’ll sell them for face.

Hey, northsider, remember when Northwestern was on the cover of the most widely subscribed sports magazine?

Yeah, neither do I.
