This does happen to him a lot.

Bradley

Sosa
Jones
For example.

And I would think he would LOVE to get rid of Soriano’s contract.

Marquis

But the Marquis signing was not a Milton/Miles style disaster.

we traded him for a reliever we didn't want.

Also, Marquis made very Milton-esque comments in spring training when there was talk about moving him to the bullpen.

Disaster? No. Bad signing, and subsequent bad trade? Yes

Milton-esque comments?

I thought he just said he wanted to start because that’s what he had been doing.

One baseball game, he came to the plate and heard a woman in the crowd shout to the pitcher, "I'll make you a chocolate cake if you strike out that 'so-and-so'!" Says Strong: "I hit that ball out of the park. Then I looked at her like, 'Do I get a cake now?' "

The Cubs owuld not have gone to the playoffs in '07

without Marquis contribution especially in April and May of that year. I’m not saying he was THE most important piece, but he was AN important piece. Jason Marquis was a good signing, if albeit, perhaps somewhat expensive.

The only reason that Marquis was let go was to free up some budget space so that the Cubs could sign …. you guessed it … Milton Bradley.

No way Hendry could have predicted Sosa’s downward spiral in 2004.

How about...

…going public with the video of Sosa leaving the park?

What do you think that did to his trade value?

yeah ...

that’s an interesting point. I’m just saying that Hendry should be blamed for giving Sosa the initial contract.

by elgato on Dec 9, 2009 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

Of course not...

…but he was worth every penny whether he was juiced or not.

All I’m saying is his value should have still been pretty decent after 04, even if he was on a decline. The video release was done because the Cubs were scared to death of the fan reaction, and that is no way to run a baseball team.

by MPH73 on Dec 9, 2009 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

I agree with MPH73 and others here...

… but the weird thing is, after the debacle of 2004 and Sosa’s decline, he probably could have been traded without too much negative fan reaction IF the deal had brought better players, which it could have if not for the release of the video.

Not being sarcastic, because I don’t remember the video release. But would that situation parallel the Bradley suspension? I.e. decreasing value and not being able to bring in better playerss?

by gaclaudy on Dec 9, 2009 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

I'd argue that

… Sosa’s power jump wasn’t as out of nowhere as Bond’s. Sosa was younger, he’d had a 40 HR season that was abbreviated by injury in 1996 AND 1998 was an expansion year (thus diluting pitching).

Anyway, I wasn’t really saying that the Cubs couldn’t have predicted Sosa’s steroid use. I was saying they couldn’t have predicted his odd, rapid decline in 2004 — especially when they gave him an extension several years earlier.

by elgato on Dec 9, 2009 4:37 PM CST up reply actions

Correct-just listing some players Jim had to try and get rid of.

Sosa wasn’t his fault. You could say that the Cubs as a whole let Sosa become such a prima donna. But I don’t really blame Hendry for him.

He also did a nice job getting rid of Hundley, who was McPhail’s fault.

But over the last few years he does seem to have to correct himself rather quickly after his deals went south in a hurry.

Also, I think Marquis was a good addition to the list, especially because of what they had to take for him.

by TJ11 on Dec 9, 2009 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

kinda tough to criticize him for Sosa

And, really, I never understood the Cubs being so dead set on trading JJ, after his second half in 2007.

But Milton, Kosuke and Miles were all bad signings — when you consider the cost and the return.

I've said this before ...

Cubs fans seem to find one guy each year who is the designated boo target. I don’t think that Cubs fans need to like the players more than fans of other teams.

The 2006 team was HORRIBLE. Several guys underperformed, especially early in the season — Pierre, Ramirez, Cedeno — but Jacque Jones got the brunt of the boos (and Dusty, but that was different).

by Ditkavsworld

by gaclaudy on Dec 9, 2009 4:26 PM CST up reply actions

That all may be true...

… but lets be real here… there is a perception surrounding baseball that the players must be good, honest men that doesn’t exist elsewhere in pro sports, and that perception is especially keep when teams with a great amount of history are in play. Hence, all the outrage over ’roids in baseball when it is largely ignored by NFL fans.

Part of this is the records. There is a storied past there that newer players tarnish when they act the way many of them do.

Part of it is the uniforms. Seriously. Sean Merriman is 100 times the jerk Bradley will ever be, has a ‘roid suspension in his past, personal problems off the field… but plays only 16 times a year with a giant helmet covering his face. Fans don’t begin to feel personally attached to football players.

Part of it is the audience. The NBA’s target fan is of a different demographic than the MLB’s. The thug / hip-hop / showboat culture is embraced in the NBA (see: dunk contest), but most signs of that in baseball are considered disrespectful.

All of that is amplified in the friendly confines, where the club’s history runs so deep, and the fans are so engaged in that history.

by AndrewJStone on Dec 9, 2009 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

Maybe we don't believe there actually will be a downgrade in playing ability

or at least that getting rid of Bradley doesn’t guarantee that. People keep talking about what a great hitter he is, but he’s far from GREAT. Yes his personality is one thing, the fact that he’s had plenty of seasons where he put up mediocre to bad numbers is another.

Some of you act like Bradley is just assured of having some spectacular season, and as Drew puts it over and over again “cutting off our nose to spite our face” Maybe the rest of us see it as dumping a guy who isn’t contributing much on the field, and creating a circus off of it.

Last year was no where near the first time he had a sub par season. It wasn’t that big an anomaly as some would like to make it out to be

If the guy is sucking, AND being a giant turd, wouldn’t you agree there’s a pretty good reason to get him off the squad?

by BoVandy on Dec 9, 2009 3:36 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

As i've stated...

if subpar seasons are the driving force behind who we keep and who we dump, we have far bigger worries than Bradley.

Those that keep acting as if his production is the reason for him going clearly aren’t paying attention. I’m sure the team would be working harder to reconcile if he put up Pujols numbers last season, yeah. But he wasn’t Aaron Miles either. Bradley has a greater potential to help the Cubs win next year than anything we’ve been rumored to get thus far.

Follow me on twitter or else: @andrewjstone.

by AndrewJStone on Dec 9, 2009 3:39 PM CST up reply actions

well, let's talk about who the team can really dump

Of the four position players who had down years, the only guy who can be traded/makes sense to be traded/will provide much value in return is Bradley. Soriano’s untradeable, dumping Soto (when he’s cheap and coming off a ROY season isn’t smart) and Fontenot won’t get you much.

We’re not JUST dumping Bradley because he had a subpar season.

by TJ11 on Dec 10, 2009 9:40 AM CST up reply actions

Exactly!

Most every writer and plenty of fans were already projecting Bradley’s failure. I.e. being an ass.

One baseball game, he came to the plate and heard a woman in the crowd shout to the pitcher, "I'll make you a chocolate cake if you strike out that 'so-and-so'!" Says Strong: "I hit that ball out of the park. Then I looked at her like, 'Do I get a cake now?' "

by Villeslgr on Dec 9, 2009 8:46 PM CST up reply actions

Would that be baiting?

That’s bs, there’s culpability with the media for the situation as well as with Bradley. I’m not trying to absolve Bradley of any wrong doing, but it seems people are forgetting what happened.

One baseball game, he came to the plate and heard a woman in the crowd shout to the pitcher, "I'll make you a chocolate cake if you strike out that 'so-and-so'!" Says Strong: "I hit that ball out of the park. Then I looked at her like, 'Do I get a cake now?' "

by Villeslgr on Dec 9, 2009 8:51 PM CST up reply actions

In my opinion, the blame is shared...

10% Media
90% Milton

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Dec 9, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions

and the Cubs

Don’t forget they signed him aware of his history.

And so it’s not misconstrued I’m not trying to make excuses for Milton’s behavior, but at the same time there seems to be a lot of revisionist history going on to justify dumping Bradley for more garbage. I’m just not fully onboard with the ideas that there is no chance that Bradley can come back and therefore we should just take whatever we can get.

But i’m done, so I’ll just go back to waiting for the Cubs to win the Series.

One baseball game, he came to the plate and heard a woman in the crowd shout to the pitcher, "I'll make you a chocolate cake if you strike out that 'so-and-so'!" Says Strong: "I hit that ball out of the park. Then I looked at her like, 'Do I get a cake now?' "

by Villeslgr on Dec 9, 2009 8:58 PM CST up reply actions

Who cares who is to blame?

The fact of the matter is that the relationship between Bradley, his teammates, the fanbase, the media, etc. is tattered beyond repair.

Jim Hendry has two choices – get a bunch of new teammates, a new more roomy stadium, change the attitude of the fan base and the media, and perhaps more the franchise to a more low key city.

or,

he could get rid of Bradley.

Eamus Ursuli!

by WGNstatic on Dec 9, 2009 10:26 PM CST up reply actions

I care about the blame because I don’t want this situation to occur again and I also don’t want to have to take garbage back for Bradley if we don’t have to.

Jim Hendry is culpable in this mess, Bradley is culpable in this mess, the media is culpable in this mess, the fans are culpable in this mess.

Hendry signed a guy who everyone knew had issues, said guy acknowledged his issues and tried to avoid situations that make him an immature baby,

the media and fans before giving Bradley a chance helped to create a toxic atmosphere, Bradley instead of being adult, professional, etc. and handling deciding to fall back on his crutches and put his back against the wall and shut himself off from everyone else.

Situation gradually and then dramatically declined into poop.

So now we are in a situation where some feel Bradley can’t return and we should take whatever we can get for him.

Some feel Bradley can’t return and if we can’t get anything for him we should just cut him.

Some feel it’s probably best if Bradley doesn’t return but aren’t willing to just cut him loose for what they feel is insufficient return or just cutting him for nothing.

Throughout this scenario many made decisions, many made poor decisions.

Personally I feel it would be best if Bradley is not on the team next year but I don’t feel this situation can be fully blamed on Milton and I feel others are getting off with out any accountability, and I’m not willing to just get rid of Milton for poor return.

One baseball game, he came to the plate and heard a woman in the crowd shout to the pitcher, "I'll make you a chocolate cake if you strike out that 'so-and-so'!" Says Strong: "I hit that ball out of the park. Then I looked at her like, 'Do I get a cake now?' "

hence my last sentence

“If the guy is sucking, AND being a giant turd, wouldn’t you agree there’s a pretty good reason to get him off the squad?”

I’d certainly like to clear off a few other guys who are dragging down the team’s payroll, while not providing a valuable return, but none of them are also giant a-holes who create a circus off the field.

Cubs are stuck with Milton Bradley unless Hendry is willing to make a deal that is a complete salary wash

I called this a few weeks ago. Don’t need to be Nostradamus to understand there is no market for Milton Bradley. The only way to move him, as suggested by Paul Sullivan this morning, is to make a deal where the $20 million still owed Milton becomes a wash. That would mean, for example, taking on Pat Burrell plus making up the $12 million difference that exists between the two contract wise.

And I don’t think Hendry has permission to simply swallow $20 million by cutting Bradley outright.

Cubs are screwed on this one. Absolutely so. Jim Hendry made his bed and now has to sleep in it.

Rich Harden will be deeply missed

He is ace-caliber. And that is what you need if you are going to be a serious contender for September and October baseball. Carlos Zambrano and Ryan Dempster are not good enough to front a staff come playoff crunch time.

Harden is not durable. And Harden is perpetually hurt. But Harden is also absolutely electric when on. He should have been this team’s Josh Beckett, or a guy who you massage along until fall baseball rolls around.

please.

First of all, if you want to talk honestly about why the bullpen was shot, let’s look at Lou’s use of three relievers in one inning, because they all pitched one third.

Secondly, he didn’t have that many more short outings (less than five innings) than anyone else on the staff did.

I’m not saying he should be slated as our ace, but if he’s willing to do a one year deal, laced with INCENTIVES (I’m assuming at least one of those incentives would be innings pitched) then he’s worth it.

But his inability to go long in games, the possibility that he could get injured and the Cubs’ current budget situation made him a luxury.

I actually agree with you on that

Hendry has handcuffed himself with bad contracts that have higher annual payouts over time. But that IS the situation we’re in right now — and that situation made re-signing Harden something the Cubs didn’t want to do.

I got flamed a lot last summer when I suggested that Fukudome and Dempster were overpaid. But if both of those guys were earning less money — or were replaced with cheaper but as productive alternatives — maybe Harden’s back. And that’s not even touching the MB situation.

In all three cases, BCBers let Hendry off the hook by saying that other teams were willing to pay as much, or more, for all three players. But that’s not an excuse! All it means is that Hendry was among several dumb GMs — and he was the one who was unlucky enough to win the bidding.

All that said, I like Dempster. He’s just too expensive, IMO.

Dempster is making $12 million more over the life of his contract than Lilly

Also, Lilly had a more consistent track record as a starter when the Cubs signed him. AND Lilly signed in winter 2006-07, when the national economy hadn’t nosedived.

I’ll grant you the points about the other players. But I understand why Lilly’s contract make sense and why Dempster looks overpaid — at least, at this point. Dempster winning 17 games again might change my mind.

Details here and I also posted a fanpost about this

“According to Craig Calcaterra of NBCSports.com, the Rangers have agreed to a one-year, $7.5 million contract with right-hander Rich Harden.

The deal also comes with an $11.5 million option for 2011. It’s a bold move by the Rangers, who have had their fair share of money problems this year, but it makes more than enough sense. The club has quickly filled a hole left by Kevin Millwood’s rumored departure to Baltimore and snagged one of the filthiest pitchers in the game. The 28-year-old Harden posted a 4.06 ERA, a 1.32 WHIP and an incredible 10.9 K/9 in 26 starts this past season. "

that's a very bleh offer

but i’ll be honest, i’m not sure the blue jays are going to do significantly better. I think they’ll probably find a better deal somewhere out there, but with indications that the Yankees may back away for a bit, there’s a good chance that this turns more into the Santana trade situation, although I think if that’s the case, Anthoupoulous may just hold onto Halladay.

by toonsterwu on Dec 9, 2009 10:10 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed.

If the return is starting to look Santana-esque, then he definitely should hold onto him and see what happens coming trading deadline. Worst case (barring injury of course), he gets his Santana-esque return then. Best case, it’s a repeat of Boston/Philly from last year – only this time, Toronto has a GM who knows when to pull the trigger.

I had a summer internship with GE working in their computer operations group. Of course, being the intern, I got all the wonderful jobs – one of which was running all the tape backup jobs for their servers. It actually was pretty easy because it was fairly automated. And integrated. For all their disks. All I had to do was the setup.

Yep – that’s what they called it. The Automated Integrated Disk Setup system. AIDS for short.

Needless to say, they went through a re-naming exercise shortly thereafter.

Latest pile of rumors .. Miltie to Boston

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/1931686,CST-SPT-cub10.article

As if Milton Bradley’s summer at Wrigley Field wasn’t loony enough, the crabby outfielder’s winter is reaching new levels of absurdity.

The latest? The Cubs are rumored to be talking to the Boston Red Sox about a swap of bad contracts that would send third baseman Mike Lowell to Chicago.

Forget for a minute that Boston might be the only worse media/fan/facilities/ societal fit for Bradley than the North Side. But what’s in it for the Cubs if Lowell’s $12 million in 2010 is tough to move, considering they already have Aramis Ramirez (whose shoulder is fine, says the team)?

The only thing more ludicrous might be that neither team was willing to explicitly shoot down the rumor.

In fact, the Cubs aren’t denying much of anything anymore when it comes to Bradley rumors, which might be a sign that the trade market for him is even weaker than first thought.
