OT: Snow Shuts Down Des Moines Area

This is a view from my driveway in the Des Moines area. We received 15 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 50 MPH all day today. Schools, malls, banks, just about everything closed. The drift that went across my driveway was four feet high. Snowplows did not come through until late this afternoon. Main streets are open but side streets are one lane if lucky. The snow was deeper than most snowblowers so the dig out was time consuming. Most schools in the metro area have announced closings for tomorrow too. It's just plain ugly. I know what you're thinking.... better you than me and yes, I would not wish this on any of you.
I was able to read all the posts on the lack of the Bradley trade today, sandwiched around blowing snow. If you live outside of the snow area, you should feel lucky. This one set some December snow records in Iowa.
While we Iowan's are stuck inside today, let's get Bradely moved so we can get on with the off season. We're dreaming of next summer with Ryne Sandberg and the Iowa Cubs, we don't have anything else to do in Iowa for the next few days!

Here on the north side of Chicago, we got… a dusting.

And yet according to all the local media...
… it was going to be the Snowpacalypse! Snowmageddon!

It's snowing now.
Probably will wind up with a 1" Snopacalypse.

A few miles up the road in the suburbs
We have about 6 inches and it’s been gusting and blowing all day

a "dusting"??? Does that mean all your streets were clogged?

I'm originally from Johnston.
My mom said she spend 3 hours clearing the driveway this morning only to have the plow come buy and dump four feet of slush and ice at the bottom of her driveway. Very happy i’m not home to deal with that mess.

I'm not very far away.
I was in JOhnston this afternoon at hardware store, the town was empty.
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).
I saw
I saw Johnston on the World News…Ya’ll had it BAD! I’m in Tenn. we had 3" of rain & 50mph wind BUT IT WAS 58F !!
A friend that works for ING in DSM...
…was called into work today, yikes!
I’ve also heard that the Mariott in downtown DSM was calling surrounding businesses with a special $69/night for those people who didn’t want to attempt driving home last night.

It was the whole
frigging state. Our whole driveway was a solid 3-4 foot drift. I hate snow.

I used to live in NW IA
and I can remember a blizzard some time in the early 80’s so bad that my sister and I went sledding down Highway 10 in the middle of the afternoon, because even the plows couldn’t or wouldn’t make it through. When the snow movers finally came through the next day (they had a big machine that looked like an oversized snowblower attached to the front of a dump truck),

there were 8’ high sheer walls of snow on both shoulders of the highway with what can only be described as an asphalt trench through the middle. It was the most impressive snowfall I have ever seen.
Living in Chicago, I have come to disbelieve the dire predictions and really be concerned when the local weather teams predict only light snowfall.

Don - aren't you glad
you aren’t in Iowa anymore??

can anyone from the Badger state confirm/deny this little tidbit?
I’m told that folks up in Wisconsin name the blizzards, much like is done for hurricanes. Is that true?
Supposedly this one is called “Allison”.

Allison is a much
nicer name then I had for this blizzard.

Wow
you got several more inches of snow than we did in Cedar Rapids. I always thought CR got the short end of the stick! Looking forward to next summer – I think having Sandberg in DM will be great for both the Iowa Cubs and the state – something to look forward to as the next few months of winter’s misery stares us down!

It's the wind
I was forced out into the blistering wind at 06:00 this am in North Liberty. The wind was just ripping into you. I-380 was solid snowpack. School already cancelled for tomorrow. Two days in a row. My little girls will be a handful tomorrow.
