Shocking, if the allegations are true.

IF they are true — and I’m making no accusation here — it would go a long way toward explaining Alomar’s sudden decline in production after 2001, at age 33; he had one of his best years that year, but inexplicably declined the following year after he was traded to the Mets.

It's normal though

for players to have a decline in production at age 34. I hate to keep going back to the steroids, but before the 1990s, it was rare for a player to stay productive into his mid-to-late 30’s. Example: look at the way our buddy Joe Morgan declined at age 34.

by Josh77 on Feb 11, 2009 11:22 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good Point on Morgan

After 1977, Morgan had only one good season with the Giants in 1982. To Morgan’s credit, he got a lot of walks to keep his on-base percentage in the neighborhood of .370 during a lot of his post-1977 seasons. 1982 was the only season after 1977 in which his batting average was better than .250. Other than hitting that homer off the Dodgers’ Terry Forster for the Giants in 1982 to knock LA out of the pennant race with Atlanta, he didn’t do anything memorable after 1977.

Exercise science has changed a lot over the last 20 years

It strikes me as an oversimplification to chalk improved longevity up solely to steroids.

by Wreckard on Feb 11, 2009 12:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

And I shouldn’t have implied that today’s players who don’t decline at 34 are taking them. It is a factor, however. But my main point is that Alomar’s decline at 34 is not uncommon and could be explained by a lot of things having nothing to do with HIV.

Older, Productive Players of the Distant Past

There are three that come to mind, a couple of old Braves, Warren Spahn and Hank Aaron, and Ted Williams. They were all extremely productive in their late 30’s. Spahn had some great seasons in his early 40’s. Pre-1980 players generally didn’t take as good as care of themselves as the players of the last thirty years. Maybe, because there was less money to be made in the game way back when, they weren’t motivated to keep themselves in shape to extend their careers for more big league paydays.

Pitchers

are a different beast and their skill set is not as athletic, so I’m not counting guys like Spahn. But Aaron dropped off in his 30’s too, it’s just that it was masked because he moved from a great pitcher’s park (Milwaukee County Stadium) to a great hitters’ park (Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium). He was still a great player though. It’s just that we didn’t realize how great he was when he was younger.

Williams was just a freak.

HIV treatment

HIV treatment drug wise is pretty extensive and debilitating,

Doubtful he had full blown AIDS back then though because it is extremely doubtful he’d be still alive today.

Once it develops into full blown AIDS you don’t have much time left.

Wow. Whats going to happen tomorrow?

Well, I assume the AIDS bit would have to be true. There are a lot of dumb lawyers out there, but I doubt any of them would would be in a lawsuit like this unless they for sure knew they had AIDS.

I wonder how any of this will affect Alomar’s HOF chances? Even if he’s innocent, I wonder peoples view of him will change knowing he has AIDs. I personally don’t think I would have voted him in anyway, but I read a lot of reports where some people said they would. I dunno….

Hope he’s doing OK and is getting the meds he needs.

Well at least

perhaps the ED will keep him from spreading it to others. I know we have to take accusations like this with a grain of salt — but its pretty bad if he has indeed been hiding this from his partners. Yuck.

HIV by itself won't hinder what chances he has.

Whether the suit has merit and he acted knowingly may impact, but HIV by itself shouldn’t help or hurt his chances.

by N Oakley on Feb 11, 2009 10:45 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Shouldn't...

Your right. It shouldn’t hurt it… but has baseball had to really face this issue before? BTW, I thought he has full blown AIDS and not the HIV virus? Maybe I am wrong though…. Ah, I’m a child of the 80’s, so it’s naturally for me to think of people discriminating against AIDS. People still do it… but I hope your right. I hope it in itself doesn’t hinder his chances.

As far as HOF

I’m thinking that the Aids thing and the spitting on ump thing will be on people minds for awhile — whether that is right or not is debatable.

"Ask Dad. He'll know. And on the off chance he doesn't, he'll make up something good"

by StevenABQ on Feb 11, 2009 10:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

There's not a rule against spitting or contracting AIDS

Robbie Alomar is a sure fire Hall of Famer despite his lack of other qualities. A better overall 2nd baseman than either Joe Morgan or Ryne Sandberg. In fact, probably the best of all time.

by BLou on Feb 11, 2009 10:53 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I think the spitting episdoe is a HUGE mark against him.

That is just wrong. Is it in itself enough to keep him out of the HOF? I don’t think so…

If this lawsuit is proven true, then yes, I think it is enough to keep him out of the HOF. But, he’s innocent until proven guilty.

I wonder also, on the reverse side of things, if it comes out that he was playing with AIDS, could he get sympathy vote?

I think as time progresses, it will be hard to keep the AIDS talk out of Alomar career… UNLESS he comes out and proves that he didn’t have it while he played.

This may not be right, but that’s how the world turns.

by TheHawkRules on Feb 11, 2009 11:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't think the spitting thing

would keep him out. If taking a baseball bat to Johnny Roseboro’s head didn’t keep Juan Marichal out, I can’t see the spitting incident keeping Alomar out, even if the BBWAA has decided to appoint itself the guardian of our nation’s morals in recent years. But there is no way you can argue what Alomar did in the spitting incident was even close to what Marichal did.

If he did knowingly infect someone with AIDS, that would probably keep him out.

I don’t think if he had AIDS while playing that it would have any impact on his HOF chances. If he had it, it would have been late in his career.

by Josh77 on Feb 11, 2009 11:49 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly...

But the media can really take that, and spin it to be like how we talk about Ron Santo and him playing with diabetes. (I am NOT comparing the two situations, I’m just thinking about what the media might do) With AIDS, i can easily see how a lot of the media would start writing stories about how Alomar went out, feeling horrible, and gave his all… maybe getting a clutch hit, etc. Even if it is true that he only had it at the end of his career.

As far as I know, no other baseball player has played played with AIDS… especially a player of Alomar’s caliber. So that in itself will be getting the media write about the ordeal, thus creating sympthy, etc…

I hope I am getting my points across. I’m tired and crappy feeling.

by TheHawkRules on Feb 11, 2009 11:57 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

There's Alan Wiggins

who died of complications of AIDS in 1991. We don’t know when the symptoms started, but he played in the 1987 season, so it’s certainly possible he was playing with AIDS. Clearly Wiggins wasn’t going to be considered for the Hall no matter what he did, but it’s an interesting precedent.

by Josh77 on Feb 11, 2009 12:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good point

Though, no offense to Wiggins… few/if anybody, remembers him. People will be naturally talking about Alomar when he becomes elligable for the HOF. Once they start talking about him, this AIDS issue (if its true), will naturally be one one of the main topics about him, his life, and his career.

Though it may not be right, I just don’t know how the media will not make this a major issue.

But he did quit baseball in his “prime” because he admitted he was gay, and that gays didn’t fit in ML clubhouses. He later died of AIDS.

It's doubtful

It’s doubtful he had AIDS while playing. He would have passed by now.

He might have been HIV positive but doubt it had developed into AIDS by the time he retired.

People can and have lived a long time now with HIV (look at Magic Johnson since 1991 wasn’t it?) but once it grows into AIDS it’s doubtful someone would be alive 4 years later.

Although the treatment regimen when you have HIV is pretty extensive.

Are you sure?

AIDS affects everyone differently. One thing in Alomars favor is that he was a major league athlete. I don’t know about the 4 year thing… maybe. During the 80’s I remember it was like this. But for people who have the $ to spend on medicine, it’s been a whole different ball game over the last 10 or so years.

by TheHawkRules on Feb 11, 2009 4:14 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

AIDS and HIV

you’re right people are living longer with AIDS but 4 years is still relatively rare.

Even if healthy when you come down with it.

HIV is different. While this is what AIDS grows out of you can go a very long time with it before getting sick.

I’m just saying its not like it won’t be on the minds of some. Based on his abilities sure he is a HOFer, and I am sure that as time goes by — players without the shadow of PEDs hanging over their head will likely be voted in sooner.

WAY MORE OT ( and NOT for the kiddies)

Believe it or not there was a “blind” gossip item in the NY Daily News on Sunday that went something like this
“A famous former athlete’s wife claims in divorce papers that they were "involved” with the family pet". That has me weirded out for the week at least.

It should be also be noted that Dwayne Wade’s wife claimed in divorce papers that he had given her a sexually communicated disease but she has backed down saying it was a “mistake” and she was upset. Not nice.

Very disturbing

It just goes to show, yet again, be very careful of hero worshipping professional athletes in today’s modern society. There are a lot of wonderful people in sports, like for example Greg Maddux and Derrek Lee. But there is also many who are varying forms of prima donna, cheats, immoral douchebags, or just plain criminal.

With all due respect to the great Ryne Sandberg, Robbie Alomar is the best 2nd baseman I ever say play the game. He had no peer defensively and was a special hitter as well. What a dirty rotten shame that his life will be cut short by such a horrendous disease.

Well

if we are to believe Alomars story — he was raped at 17 by 2 mexicans — which I guess implies that might be how he contracted it…I guess..????

Wait... so now we're saying

He played with HIV all through his career????

I think she just threw the raped by Mexicans stuff in to have some fun with Roberto.

Its pretty out there

to say the least. But as KOW has said, perhaps this will be a lesson to us all to not get raped by mexicans and get aids.

My point

The point I was trying to make is maybe seeing someone like him struck with AIDS may make someone think twice before just hooking up with the next person who will hop into bed with them without thinking.

Noted.

And I’m glad this all came up, because I didn’t realize there were adverse consequences for those practices.

I lost all respect

for Alomar as a result of the spitting incident.

Don't know the answer

This is a civil suit…but if I’m not mistaken a lot of states have laws against knowingly engaging in sex / infecting your partner without informing them if you have a STD.
Does NY have such a law, and if so, and if this all turns out to be true, would he be charged under that law?
