How does the economic situation affect you purchasing Cubs tickets?
I live in Florida. I earn a middle-class income. In years past, I've flown to Mesa one week every Spring and to Chicago several times during the course of the season to watch the Cubs.
With the increase in game ticket prices and the economy the way it is, I'm forced to re-think my plans for 2009. I'm already not flying to Mesa this year and am debating if I'm taking my usual "personal day" off from work to sit in front of several laptops waiting in the Virtual Waiting Room for hard-to-get Opening Day, White Sox, Cardinals, and several other weekend tickets.
My daughter lives in Chicago. I usually buy tickets for her and her college friends as well as for me and my fiancée. Last year I bought several 9-packs. This was the closest I was ever going to get to season tickets. For one reason or another, some of the games in the 9-pack were difficult to attend. Selling tickets at the last minute were a chore. "Meet me at this 'L' stop" or "Meet me downtown" was sometimes difficult for my daughter, who attends classes, works a part-time job, and volunteers for community service.
Selling a pair of unused bleacher seats for $45 (face) each last year was a struggle for some games. At $60 a piece this year, it may be even harder. This year's 13-pack was not an option for me. I could not take the chance of holding pricey tickets to games my daughter nor I could attend.
All this being said, how has or will the current economic situation affect your participation in purchasing advanced tickets? Will you be waiting in the VWR Friday, Feb 20th? For those of you who live so far away that it requires an overnight stay or an airline ticket, do these expenses change your plans?
How does the economic situation affect you purchasing Cubs tickets?
I'm curious to read other people's feedback.

I think you have it scoped out pretty well.
The 13-pack is a good indication. If you didn’t buy them — and usually you do get tickets like that — I suspect a lot of people will buy less this year.
I expect games to still sell out, but perhaps slower than before, and some of those “platinum” games — say, vs. the Mets, who aren’t the rival they used to be — might go real slowly.

Lower Gas Prices Are Good
I hope they stay under $2 a gallon for the baseball season. However, I anticipate the prices to go over $2 a gallon. I plan to make the drive to Atlanta to see the Cubs in June and catch an I-Cubs game against Nashville on my way back. I should see the Brewers at Wrigley in September for the last three games of that series and catch a Cubs-Cardinals game in St. Louis on my back. As long as gas doesn’t get outrageously expensive again to the tune of $3.50+ per gallon, my plans won’t change.

Regular is $2.10 a gallon now in Orange County. I’m not complaining — beats the hell out of $4.60!

I sold my share of Season Tickets
My family and I split season tickets and due to the near stop in new construction projects I had to sell my portion of the tickets. It was a very sad day.
For last 3 years
We’ve gone to Chicago for several games. And for the last 7 years we have gone to Mesa for ST for at least a week. This year we’ll be Mesa for 7 days…but don’t think we’ll see a game at the Windy city — probably head up to Denver (When Cubs play the Rox) for a couple since its alot closer to Albuquerque.

We've sold more shares into our syndicate
My family purchased a partial season ticket plan 15 years ago or so – weeknights, weekends and holiday games.
Usually, we split the tickets among 4-5 families, but this year, we’ve gotten more people involved so as to not have unused tickets.
I’ll still make the drive up to Chicago for 5-10 games, mainly because the price of gas has thankfully dropped.

Not yet...
I live in Mississippi, and ChiTown is our only long vacation each year, and I’d have to be absolutely broke and jobless not to go. So my wife and I will be up there for 5 games again this year – the same as we were last year on our honeymoon. But we’re driving in our car (usually take the more spacious truck), and we’re staying in a much cheaper apartment / hotel than we have before. We will probably opt for less museums, cheaper food, etc. So I guess the rest of our vacation will be affected, but not the Cubs games.
Good for you!
Enjoy your trip, the Cubs, and your bride.

I will probably scalp a few more of my season tickets
but that will probably get less than fewer games did last year. I buy extra bleachers and am pretty sure I can sell them off but IF I or my wristband friend’s get through I will have them get only the top 10 games and the 4 other games I need. Ironically since I did get laid off and plan on taking time off I will probably see MORE games than last year.
Throwing caution to the wind I extended my Spring Training trip by a day and a half.
"I am not ashamed to say I love Greg Maddux" - Jim Hendry
I bought spring training tickets
for the Cubs vs Rockies and Diamondbacks. In a few years it may cost me more to see spring training games because after the Rockies and D’backs leave Tucson, I will have to drive to Mesa to see the Cubs. If gas goes back up to $4.00/gal. again it will certainly make me think twice about making the drive.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings. ~Earl Wilson
Attendance
will probably be in the same ballpark it has been for the last few years. My best guess is that the secondary (scalper, stubhub, ebay, etc) market will come in quite a bit. People probably won’t pay $125/ticket to sit in section 238 just because it’s a nice Saturday afternoon in the summer. I think that market will suffer which is totally fine by me since the average fan who may be limited to less games due to the economy this year will get the opportunity to see a World Series season.
$
I was laid off last week, shortly after relocating to take the position. With this economy, I don’t know how long I’ll be out of work, which is a very scary thing. I’ll be buying tickets to scalp, in hopes of making some money.
Sorry to hear that story.
That truly sucks.

I would not count on scalping. It will be a buyers market.

Yeah I know
Sox games, Opening Day, Indians games, maybe a couple Cards games… that’s all I’ll be going for this year. Hopefully things change and I’ll actually be able to use the tickets to one of the games.
Thanks, Al.
and my guess is the Cubs cut into the scalpers' profit margin by increasing the ticket prices
just enough to get what the traffic will bear.
The most I would pay a scalper for a $45 bleacher seat was $60-75. Now that the Cubs are getting $60, less margin for the scalper, especially in these times.

Still going to AZ
for ST a couple times; one weekend with the buds, one full weed with the family during kids’ spring break.
I’ve sold 66 of the 81 regular season games. Even without the downturn economically, 1. It’s almost impossible for me to go to anywhere near the full seasons worth of games and 2. I’d have a hard time justifying dropping $80-100 a ticket for so many games. 3. I have BLACKHAWK PLAYOFF tickets to get.

Also don’t forget this site is a very small group of smart Cubs fans. They also tend to enjoy chatting on here rather than going to many games.
While this website is a great example for Cubs in general, this might not be the best site to get an overall economic idea of Cubs fans.
In the minority
As I am on so many things.
I don’t enjoy going to games. I enjoy drinking beer that I bought at the gas station for $15 a case instead of $15 for two at the stadium. No one charges me to park in my driveway and I don’t have to stand in line for the bathroom.
There is no traffic to get from my living room to my bedroom to go to bed when the game is over. I can pause the DVR, rewind it if I miss something, or switch around if it’s a dull game.
I went to a Cards-Astros game two years ago because someone gave me $10 tickets and I wanted to see the new stadium — and I’m geographically closer to St. Louis than Chicago anyway. That was the last time I went.
I fear the economy will create more people like me.

that Worf does not like going to games. I was SURE he was the kind of person who seeing the great game of baseball in person and in the sunshine. Trust me it is possible to watch gams at Wrigley and NEVER drink beer even in the bleachers not to mention , bring your own food & drink and take public transportation. I have been doing it all my life.

Yeah
I have a hard time eating / drinking of any kind during games…but I keep score so that makes it a little harder but saves me money. For those that can do both I applaud you — you probably can get a cart full of grocerys and fast-food take out into a 3rd floor apartment with no problem either.
"Ask Dad. He'll know. And on the off chance he doesn't, he'll make up something good"
I could make my own scorecards ...
… but I buy the Cub ones, because I have a collection of them going back to 1969. It just seems right.
I bring my own pencils, but Walter the scorecard vendor insists that I take the “free” one anyway. I give them to my kids to use at school, so I save money by not having to buy them pencils for school.

Nice
Yeah I created my own in Excel, I have a binder that I take, its nice for ST and here locally at AAA ball games. Thats alot of scorecards — the basement must be packed.
"Ask Dad. He'll know. And on the off chance he doesn't, he'll make up something good"
I have a closet full of scorecards, arranged by date.
Still haven’t finished organizing the last couple of years. I’ll get to it eventually.
I do have a scorecard form I use for spring training games and road games where I know they don’t sell team scorecards.

I have a tv in my garage, a tv on my deck, and a hd projector with a 120" in my den. It’s pretty hard to justify the 4 hour round-trip commute more than a couple of times a year.

CUTTING BACK ALSO......
Still going to ST in Mesa, Still going to Wrigley for a long weekend ..But not going to Cincinnati to catch a series there …..I think the vendors are going to see it also …WORFS right 15.00 for 2 beers ?? Gotta think someone is making alot of $$ on us .
Money
My guess is a ballpark’s margin on a beer is 75%. And yet for whatever reason(s), I still buy them.
Only ST is different. We tailgate at every game, whether or not they’re at HoHoKam. Therefore $7 gets nearly a half-case, even with prices in PHX.
Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.
Ironically
I could actually see myself attending MORE games this year if, by some stretch, it becomes easier to buy day-of-the-game tickets.
At the same time, I won’t be indulging in anything extra at the games (beer, food, etc.). Well, maybe a scorecard (but I’ll bring my own pencil).
I always bring a bag of peanuts
and a bottle of water to the park with me.
The food at Wrigley isn’t vry good and is definitely not worth the price.

The pencils are part of the deal
They used to be .25 when the scorecards were $1 – but when (about three years ago?) they raised the price of the scorecards to $2 they starting including the pencil with it (net increase of .75?). The new pencils are full length models too!

Last year
the family and myself came into Chicago for 3 game set against the Pirates. We also had 3 days in the City to do other things. Great time, family just loved it. Obviously coming from Delaware we will not make the trip again this year.
I have never been to the new Pirates stadium, plan on going in June for at least one of the games.
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
one to add
would have been I will see road games only, due to the lesser cost of tickets. I see them in Houston (might go to Atlanta if things line up right), and have not gone to WF in years, and will not be making my return this season with the finances as they are currently.

CHEAPER ROAD GAMES......
Ticket prices cheaper on the road as well as hotel rooms …..Cincinnati,Atlanta, and Pittsburgh….Run into alot of Cubs fan that say the same thing….." Prices around Wrigley are out of line ."
PNC PARK.......
You should not have a hard time getting tickets…..Check out the Buckos web site ..Last time we were there Cubs fans were the majority ….Iron City has a nice downtown ….
Good call
and it’s one of the nicest parks in baseball, despite the lack of attendance.

Even Cubs games in Pitt won't be packed
I believe Pirates play the Cubs during the week in 2009 for every series. That takes away from weekend trips. I bet Pirates are not happy about that one.
Well, yes and no.
The Pirates would tend to draw better on weekends, so having the Cubs there during the week might boost attendance on otherwise lower-drawing dates.
One of the series begins on Labor Day.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
If all goes well....
I’ll be able to take in a few more than my usual three or four a year. I plan to go to the set in Detroit as well. Luckily, my work schedule is fairly flexible and I figure that ticket availability will be better this season. To do this, I’m trimming some fat in other areas of the budget.
"I find sometimes it's easy to be myself. Sometimes I find it easier to be somebody else..." - Dave Matthews
For me
I had my Mesa trip scheduled last fall. Since then I bought a new furnace and airconditioner. That unplanned purchase plus everything else that seems to break at the same time has put me in a hole. I’ll still go to Mesa but may not get my usual two or three trips to Chicago, maybe just one. I feel a lot of fans will cut out a trip or a game just to save some cash. At least I have my job. My heart goes out to you that lost yours, I would not handle that well. I hope this gets turned around for everybody.
This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).
I'll still come to games, but cut down on my spending
I made four trips from Iowa City to Chicago last year. I am lucky to have a good friend from college that lives in Wrigleyville. He has a two car garage, so I have no issue with parking. Each time I come over we have a few beers at a neighborhood establishment. Sometimes I spend the night and I’ll walk over to Southport for some breakfast while rush hour traffic dies down. I suspect I’ll still come for three or four games, but the post game meal may be burgers grilled on his deck, and beer from the fridge.
Also looking at doing a cheap trip to Des Moines for the I-Cubs instead of one of the trips to Chicago. I can also go to Cedar Rapids and see Peoria play.
I gotta skip Chicago AND AZ this year.
Not because I’m hurting that much, but because my friends and brother, who always come along, are either unemployed, expecting pink slips, or just going into money saving mode.
It’s pretty interesting, from an economic point of view, how just from this BCB post, we can see why the economy has grinded to a halt — People just ain’t spending money. Hopefully things change, sooner rather than later.
Hang in there Cubs fans — Things will improve!

Well...
Right now I’m on a one trip to Wrigley and one trip to AZ every 20 years pace, so uhh, I probably will just maintain that.
Free Ronny Cedeno
I have a streak of going to Wrigley...
it stands at 8 years right now. I am 19 and live 2 hours from the best stadium in sports. I will be making the trip at least once, but I don’t know when or against whom.
Tickets should be easier to come by this year so I will probably bring the girlfriend for a May game as her graduation gift. She’ll skip school, we’ll drive in from Rockford and catch a game and stroll through the city…should be a lot of fun.
Oh, and I forgot to add, for all 8 years I’ve gone, the Cubs have won at least one game that I’ve gone to each year…so hopefully that trend keeps going too.

Sorry guys
In my experience even with a down economy if the Cubs are winning people will pay top dollar to come to Wrigley and watch a game.
I do think that the new ticket prices will cut into scalpers margins somewhat but those guys seem to manage to rig the prices so if you show up to the park you have to pay the ‘going rate’ whatever that is.
I sell a few of my season tickets to games I can’t go to- so it is nice to know what to expect in return. At first I felt bad about it, but then I realized I needed to feed my cubs addiction somehow… selling some of my season tix allows me to break even most years… maybe not this year but I can’t resist buying those damn tickets!
Out with the Old and in with the Nucleus The Tortured Fan Base welcomes our new owner.
"In a down economy"...
… the thing is, we haven’t seen anything like the current situation, and so I don’t think anyone knows how the new economic conditions will affect the Cubs, winning or not.
It has appeared that the Cubs may be recession-proof. We’re about to find out if that’s true.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Part of me thinks...
…baseball may be even more popular this year because it will function as a sort of comfort food for the masses. Maybe concession sales will go down, but I think ticket sales may stay fairly consistent.
We are a fever ... we are a fever ... we ain't born typical.
What some small market teams may do...
… is start discounting tickets. The Giants already have “dynamic pricing” for some games — for less popular games, prices may go down as the game date approaches.
Other teams may try something like this just to get people in the park.

Early 1980's
Let’s be glad that the Cubs are a lot better than they were in the early 1980’s, when the economy was in the dumper.
"The big possum walks late." - Harry Caray
The huge fan base really helps the Cubs
I’m not sure we’ll see the 600k ticket feeding frenzy next Friday. IIRC, ~600k is the Cubs’ all time single day ticket sales record sometime in the last few seasons.
My guess is ticket sales will be brisk but not quite what they were previously. Platinum (we all knew this was going to happen one day; a 4th tier in pricing) games will go right away.
After the weekend restrictions are lifted on the 23rd, I expect to see many Silver games still available. In fact, more so than in 2007 and 2008.
Last year you could get the Milw Sept series (mid-week though) tickets in the bleachers at the end of March. I fully expect things like that more so this year.
Not having ST’s previously, I closely studied how the tickets sold out during that first weekend. The web browser would update sold-out games. It helped me figure out how to attack which dates first the following seasons.
Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.
I agree with your analysis...
… some of the Platinum dates may not go that quickly. The Cardinals, Brewers & White Sox are marquee opponents and always draw well.
The Mets, not so much any more. That series may be overpriced.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Don't forget the Rockies
as this year they will be a Marquis opponent… ;-)
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
I think the Cleveland series June 19-20-21 will be big
It’s not a “platinum” home game—it’s “gold”—but I think it will draw a quick sell-out.

shhh, don't give them any ideas
"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."
Scalpers may take it in the shorts on a few games
The part timers that think they’ll grab Cubs tickets and then slip them on Stub Hub, or wherever, and triple their money may not be so lucky this year. The Cubs will do better than most teams, but this economy is hurting. I have a pretty secure job, but I deal with people on a daily basis that are really feeling some pain. The Wrigley experience is enough of a draw for some people, but this is February. Project out to August and see how much disposable income will be out there. This economy will get worse before it gets better. Heck, I read they are even laying off lawyers at some big firm in Chicago. Imagine, 100 lawyers getting pink slipped in one day. That is 100 people who have higher than average income, who are used to having disposable income hitting the streets.
You can already see this on Craig's list
People who bought the 13 pack are actually trying to scalp things like Marlin & Reds games in April & May. There are no takers
I bought a 13 back and need only 7 ,the remaining six are a mix especially since I am actually using the two biggest clunkers. I listed the remaining ones at face and so far not so much as a nibble however it is only one bleacher ticket per game. I think folks buying to make a profit will be very dissapointed.
