Adam Dunn is a Nat
Apparently they've reached an agreement. I really wanted Dunn, I wonder what the $$ looks like here.

Good.
The last thing the Cubs need is another OF who makes Sori look like a gold-glover.

It's a nice signing for them
Considering Abreu’s deal, I’d guess that the AAV is probably in that 5-8 range, perhaps with some incentives.
I imagine that this signals a Manny and Dodgers signing moving enough that Dunn thought his chances in LA were next to none.
The Nats lineup looks alright, but their SP is bad, and the pen needs work. Their system doesn’t have many top flight arms, with Zimmerman/Detwiler/McGeary as the top 3. Of course, come this summer, they could be adding one Stephen Strasburg (and with the Crow pick, perhaps another arm). But their lineup looks something like
C – Jesus Flores
1st – Adam Dunn or Josh Willingham – Much as they might like and hope Nick Johnson turns around, I doubt they are depending on it.
2nd – ?
SS – Cristian Guzman
3rd – Ryan Zimmerman
RF – Elijah Dukes
CF – Lastings Milledge
LF – Dunn or Willingham
That leaves out Kearns, Wily Mo Pena, and Nick Johnson. Kearns contract probably precludes a trade. Rumors have them linked with possibly looking at Orlando Hudson, but they are better off holding onto their 2nd round pick.
Don't they have Belliard for 2B?
I know they do have 8 M for Kearns to sit the bench.

Milledge and Dukes have a ton of upside
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
Good signing. Looking forward to seeing the $$

I'm glad he didn't go to the Astros.

it's good to get him out of the division
I don’t know the numbers, but Dunn always seems to hammer the Cubs when I’m watching. We would have seen a lot more of him if he signed with Houston.
He did hammer the Cubs
to the tune of .260/.398/1.012 in 109 games. He had 38 HR and 67 RBI, to boot.

Yeah, me too.
Although it would’ve been fun watching the ‘Stros try to cope with having Carlos Lee and Adam Dunn playing trying to play outfield defense, it wouldn’t have been fun facing a lineup with El Caballo, Dunn and Berkman – and Tejada, assuming he’s not in the slammer.

Tejada's sentencing comes down March 26
Think Orlando Cabrera’s agent will have contacted the Astros by then?

I don't think they have any money to spend.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t have non-tendered Ty Wigginton.
Hey, it's a new century!

Say Tejada gets jail time (which is doubtful)
they could attempt to void his contract and free up money if they really needed a shortstop to fill Miggy’s shoes.
But I would agree, they are strapped for cash, severely limiting their options.

I'm guessing Dunn plays 1B for them, as they already have a ton of OF.
That’s probably a good deal. They got themselves a name player who can hit HR. He’ll sell some tickets for them.

Much better option than Tex for anyone other than the Yankees. Nice deal for them.

+14 points for me in the free agent pick 'em contest.
Good to see Jim Bowden still hangs on to his former Reds.

Actually, Bowden did sign Reese
On May 24, 2008. Doesn’t look like Pokey played a game, though.

Good for the 'Nats.
Their team just got a little more interesting. I’ll admit it: I wanted Dunn. I was willing to roll the dice on his right field defense to get his 40 home runs, but I’m not terribly disappointed things have worked out the way they have.
Must be kind of a bummer for Dunn, though. He goes from one perennial noncontender to another.

He did have those 3 glorious months in Arizona, though...
when they gave away their playoff spot to LA.

it hurt to type
I didn’t want to refer the City of Angels National League baseball team, and just thinking about Dunn’s time with the Snakes reminded me of a simpler time when we were all concerned about Webb, Haren, et al…

I was a proponent of Dunn, too
But I’ve come around to Bradley. Obviously, the big question is health, but if Milton doesn’t stay healthy (or, healthy enough) then his deal is less than Dunn’s.
And, anyway, I think Bradley is a better bet playing right in Wrigley. But I could be wrong.

Bradley is a plus outfielder, while Dunn is absolutely dreadful
I think the decision for the Cubs came down to that. And overall, Bradley is a more versatile and dynamic offensive player. I understand that chicks dig the long ball and that Dunn can get on base, but he also strikes out a prodigious rate and that is about the last thing this often dysfunctional Cubbie lineup needed. We have a better shot to beat good pitchers with Bradley in the lineup versus Dunn. I’m absolutely convinced of that.
Best thing to do is sign for 2 years.
The economy should be in better shape 2 years from now and the DLee will be a free agent in 2 years. :D
SORIANO! YESSSSSSSS! JIMBO!!!
Poor Adam Dunn
It is clear he was trying like hell not to wind up a Washington National. But in the end the market was such that he was reduced to zero other options. I am VERY surprised the San Francisco Giants didn’t sign him. Giants have the pitching to contend right now, but what they desperately need is another couple bats until some of their glitzy youngsters in the minors are ready.
P.S.
I’ll be rooting for the Nationals and Dunn. The much maligned Jim Bowden knows what he is doing better than a lot of people give him credit. I’m not saying he is great, but he is better than most think and does seem to be operating under a plan.
Fangraphs disagrees with you.
Check out this article, just posted, which rips Bowden pretty good.

jim bowden
is horrible!
I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!
You're high...
Or Bowden is. Putting aside the fact that Bowden decided to bid against himself on Dunn for a moment, it makes the Willingham trade and Young extension look all the more ridiculous. Dunn won’t look terrible at first base, and will hit a lot of home runs — although likely less than in his Cincy days. That’s the nicest thing that can be said about the deal. He’s a downgrade defensively, and frankly, not the kind of professional a smart GM would want around a young ball club.
It’s a nowhere, nothing move. It won’t make the team better in the long run, won’t put significantly more butts in the seats in the short run, and forces one to start questioning the GM and his vision, as he can’t seem to stop collecting these DH/1B/LF types with shaky work ethics and professionalism. All it does is allows Bowden to say “we’re trying to improve the team” to suckers.

Exactly why they signed him.
People will buy tickets to see Dunn.

yup
For all the games I’ve been to see where the Cubs play the Nats, I’ve honestly not cared about a single player besides Soriano in 2006 when he was a Nat. Other than that, you get a treat to see the wonderful players such as Elijah Dukes, Jesus Flores, and Ronnie Belliard! They need a pitcher. None of their starters would even compete for a spot in our rotation..
#34: You'll be missed!
Actually, John Lannan would.
Lannan’s a good pitcher. I wouldn’t mind seeing him in the Cubs rotation someday.

Yeah, he has the potential, but as of right now isn't a true ace
Let’s just say, if Glavine were to sign with him he would be their ace..
#34: You'll be missed!
No way.
Glavine’s pretty much done. Lannan’s a better pitcher right now than Glavine.

Agreed...
I caught a few of his starts last year, and came away very impressed. Lannan is a real talent.
