Thursday Name That Cub
While we wait for the 2009 Cubs to report tomorrow (at least, the pitchers & catchers), name this Cub from the past. Clue: this one's about as obscure as it gets.
One change in this game: previous winners are ineligible to win again until 30 days have passed... this is to give a chance to others. Thanks!

I had to look him up.
But no, it’s not him.

I can't believe I have two pictures of Winceniak

Good heavens, WHY?

I ask myself the same question
"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."
Personally, I think he looks a little like a young Paul McCartney...

And he is a distant relative of...
… a minor leaguer by the same name who spent last year in the Royals organization.

Lee Elia?
Let me ask for a small hint. When we find out who this is, is it going to be a collective “Who?”, or is it someone that knowledgeable fans will at least have heard of?

It'll likely be a collective "Who?"

Nope.
Not THAT old.

I' ll say
Dick Ellsworth, according to my trusty Baseball Reference guide.
Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana
Under rule
of BCB # a-002 using the baseball reference is akin to using steroids and not tolerated. Copes you are going down a slippery slope and risk being banned for 60 seconds or less.

If i don't look it up
It’ll take me 30 days to come up with something. This guy must be6’ 7" with that hat!
Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana
And by that time
you lose out. I hear you man.
"You can't take life to seriously, you don't get out of it alive"
No, only the hat is that tall.

I am thinking
he has got an outrageous ’doo under there.
Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana
No, the haircut should be another clue.

oh, then this guy must be the first endorser...
…for Tom Emanski’s baseball school until Fred McGriff took over.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
6'5", 6'9" with the afro
Oh…sorry, getting my movies mixed with reality again.

The cap should be a clue.

Hey what can I say
I figured with a head that big, he hand big hands. UH?
"You can't take life to seriously, you don't get out of it alive"
He never played for the Cubs.

We did Schaffernoth already.

that makes me obscure, it seems. :-/

the cap is a clue huh?
ive got it—-Cap Anson
I think your right,
It must be Adrian Constantine Anson
I have no clue...
…but, if he’s a pitcher, I would assume the umps pulled him off the mound regularly to see what he’s got under his cap.
We are a fever ... we are a fever ... we ain't born typical.
Dick Drott?

Gabe Gabler?

Not him, but there's a clue there somewhere

Still no correct guesses.

Footer Johnson.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Wow, had to look that one up, too.
But it’s not him.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
But he looks like a Footer.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Wonder how he got that.
His baseball-reference page says he’s also nicknamed “Treads”.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Well, his given name was Richard Johnson.
So maybe he asked to be called Footer. He must have been fast to get the name “Treads”
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Actually, I think "Treads" would be derisive, meaning he was slow.
But if I was named Richard Johnson, I’d take any nickname I could get.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Of course. Interesting that he took Footer.
I wonder if something was wrong with a foot, given his two feet-related nicknames.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
He was ahead of the curve in bringing martial arts mainstream.
Meditating in the cramped clubhouse probably didn’t go over too well, which is why he was gone after 8 games.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Phil "Murdock" is actually "Mudrock".
But the photo isn’t him.

John Buzhardt?

Hersh Freeman, by chance?
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Still no correct answer.

his nickname was Moose (or Duke).
kind of fits that picture

We did Massa already.

so I guess you are telling me that I am away from BCB too often. :-(
…twice today!

ehhh - where's my glasses... I meant Bob Will
hopefully no relation to George
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
OK, I better give a clue.
This man played in the 1960’s.

Moe Morhardt
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
DINGDINGDING!!!
Winner.
Guess that clue was too good.
Joe Campbell played one game for the 1967 Cubs. They don’t come much more obscure than that.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
And no fielding chances.
It’s weird that a major league player would have a game like that, in May (not as a September callup) as his only ML experience.

The day he got called up, he faced the Braves' Dick Kelley three times
Kelley wasn’t that good of a pitcher.
Kelley comes out of nowhere and pitches a three-hit shutout, striking out Campbell 3 times in 3 AB.

Winner as noted above.

It was some guy who went 0-3 in his MLB career!
Are you kidding me? That was a hard one! I’ll try again tomorrow!
Gabe Gapler did the same thing, striking out
in three PH appearances
"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."
* Gabler
"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."
I was going to guess Gabler earlier...
But couldn’t find a picture of him to compare.

Joe Campbell owns a Chevrolet dealership in Bowling Green, KY
He purchased the dealership in 1981.
