Bruce Miles Blogs Friday At Cubs Camp
In which we learn that:
* Z hasn't had LASIK yet because he has an eye infection.
* Fukudome is still in Japan (because of the WBC) but the Cubs are "monitoring" him.
* Z may not start on Opening Day. (Good!)
* Soriano's going to lead off.

Why is it that everytime the WBC is mentioned it’s always a bad thing, or like it’s a hinderance? I’m going to answer my own question here. BECAUSE IT IS! Freakin Bud.
Anyway, glad Z is not going to pitch for Venezuela and I’m curious to see what he looks like with a mustache. I’m thinking a latino Todd Jones.

That looks like Bruce Miles in the baseball cap.
Paul Sullivan is to his right (in the photo).
Z looks like he’s ready to start a coup in Venezuela.

Disagree completely
Baseball (the world?) needs more awesome mustaches. If he has to put the LASIK off long enough, maybe Gregg will get him into some sweet-ass glasses as well.

Soriano at Leadoff
I’m not surprised. I hope Sori can draw at least 60 walks this season and has an OBP over .360. He’s never had an OBP over .351. He’s only gotten over the 60 walk mark once. Well, Lou must think Sori’s doing well enough in the leadoff spot. Let’s hope he stays healthy and gets on base more often.

You honestly think the team would be better with Fukudome, Theriot, Fontenot / Miles, or the pitcher leading off?
Because I honestly don’t think you mean to say you want to see Soto, Ramirez, Bradley or Lee there, even though they’re the only players who would be an improvement there (in terms of runs generated).

I don't think that's the case with Z
he’s admitted in the past to being “too amped” and he understands it. Game 1 is only 1 of 162 and he has to take the ball 33-35 times.
I do get your point though as I still maintain Don Baylor’s not starting Todd Hundley in his first game as a Cub at Wrigley certainly hurt his psyche given all the familial circumstances Hundley faced. He was devastated.
by socalbob on Feb 13, 2009 6:38 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly.
I think that was part of the reason Z didn’t start game 1 of the playoffs — Lou felt he’d be too overwrought.

I don't think Z is our ace
It’s been a long time since Z’s been a top level pticher (you can argue that 2004 was the last time he was a front of the rotation type arm, although I’d probably go with 2005). I don’t care who starts opening day, I just don’t think Z is our ace, and I don’t think we NEED Z to be our ace.
If there is one pitcher on our staff that we NEED something from, I’d go with Rich Harden, who is the best pitcher on our staff, but only if we can keep him healthy.

All you have to look at is who pitched the best in big games. Z pitched the best in the last two playoffs. I also saw a stat last year, where he had a tremendous era, against winning teams, in his lifetime. Z is a big game pitcher.

Soriano
I’ve resigned myself to the guess hitting hack not changing his ways much. All I ask is that the preferential treatment STOP. Hold Soriano accountable for producing, period. We already know we didn’t get a franchise or clutch performer for the $136 million. But just demand that he produce. And when he is in cold slump swinging from his heels for two weeks, then bench him until he gets his act together. And when he makes boneheaded plays in left, then replace him during the late innings.
My positive view of Piniella is well documented. But he’s got to stop with the kid gloves when it comes to Soriano.
by BLou on Feb 13, 2009 5:17 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
that's great over a little league
high school, or college season. But over 162 games, you don’t take your franchise player out of games. Maybe a day or two tops, but you don’t yank him in and out of the lineup. Players don’t remain happy coming in and out of the lineup. They are human and there is a “pride” factor. Soriano is a proven veteran and deserves the respect. He will makie errors and go into slumps. But your “medicine” is way overboard. Not every season needs to be treated in a hard-ass, no love fashion.

We’ve heard that Kosuke and Reed Johnson will platoon. But I have to believe that Kosuke is going will need a good spring to claim a starter or platoon role in centerfield. Something tells me this is going to be wide open between Kosuke, Johnson and Joey Gathright.

Is Kosuke guaranteed the job?
No, but I think it’s his to lose. Gathright is strictly a defensive replacement/pinch runner, barring some miraculous season that no one, probably including Gathright, is expecting. Reed isn’t strong enough defensively in CF to get a full workload. Now, I don’t think Kosuke can have a horrid spring, but as long as he’s alright, I think he’s the guy.
With Bradley here now, I’d also like to see them try Kosuke in the 2-hole. It looks like Fontenot and Fukudome are the best 2-hole options, unless we want to see Theriot there (and I prefer Ryan in the 8th spot.)
1. Soriano – It’s happening.
2. Fukudome or Fontenot
3. Lee – I don’t expect that they’ll budge him.
4. Bradley – my guess, although maybe Ramirez is at 4.
5. Ramirez
6. Soto
7. Fontenot or Fukudome
8. Theriot

There is one other option. It may not be likely - but we may see it at least once this season:
An OF of Soriano – Bradley – Hoffpauir.

An argument for Lee in the 3 spot is that
It “extends” the lineup a bit. Assuming Lee isn’t going to hit 2nd, and that, because of his stature, they aren’t likely to dump him to 6th or lower early in the season, unless his performance dips, putting him at 3 gives him two potential solid guys to follow him up, while perhaps letting the bottom of the order have better opportunities if Bradley and Ramirez are getting on base, whereas putting him, say, 5th, if you perceive him to be a weakness, might lessen the chances.

I would be mildly curious
about Kosuke leading off, but I doubt that happens, and Kosuke has to prove that he can improve first. But Kosuke, while not a huge SB threat, did go 12/16 last year, a livable rate, and has good plate discipline (for the most part).
That said, it’s Soriano’s job unless he gets hurt or struggles badly.

They won 97 games with him as their leadoff hitter.
BP has him projected with a .348 OBP. If he does that , they’ll be fine.

Somewhat off topic (rumor)
Take it for what it’s worth – a rumor on sports radio:
I heard late this week on (phx.) sportsradio that one of the clubs interested in FA Orlando Hudson might be the Cubs.
Very good player, Hudson. Though Fontenot, I feel, is on the verge of a breakout year (big time). Add Miles to the mix also.
"Hey Hey, Holy Mackerel, No Doubt About It!"
by scottsdalecubs on Feb 13, 2009 9:19 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
I hope not
bc then we’d have four second basemen. If Hudson is still around the Miles signing looks worse and worse.
But I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. I trust Hendry. He’s been right far more times than he’s been wrong.

I am worried about Harden...
I really am. i am not convinced he will hold up. I think part of the reason we have so many starters competing is because we are going to need them. I really am praying that Shark makes a big jump. Who knows about Guzman. If i am a betting man (and I am) I would take the under on 25 starts would most likely take the under on 20 starts and would most likely take the under on 100IP… I would also take a prop bet of where does Harden start the year? And gamble on DL. I have been very optimistic with him but he scares me poopless. If healthy he is the best starter in the NL (yes the NL maybe al of basebeball) but i dont think he is healthy

I think Hendry's worried too.
The chasing of Jake Peavy convinced me that Hendry was concerned about one, or maybe two, of his starters health.

Also I really dont know why in gods green earth Fukudome thinks its a good idea to mozy into camp
in the middle of March. I get it he wants to play for the Japan but seriously? Bad call. He needs to prove himself to the organization. He better live up to that contract. Just think if we didnt have that contract…

I think you are correct. If that happens send him to AAA or something. He wsa terrible. I hope he can turn it around though. I am going to be optimistic. I am not sure why though

What are peoples thoughts on Hoffpauir?
Is he going to make this team? I personally would rather have Jake Fox make it. But from what I see there is no one on this roster who can back up 3B and we dont have a SS on the roster.

Well...
Miles is suppose to be the back up SS. I don’t think that fits so your Jake Fox pick makes some sense.
However I am still a believer in Hoffpauir. I hope he proves everyone wrong and fills the role of the ’07 Ward.

I think he will
unless he horribly flops. We need some pop off the bench. I want to see Jake Fox hit at AAA first before considering him.
I think the plan is for Miles to be the primary backup at 2nd, SS, and 3rd.
by toonsterwu on Feb 14, 2009 12:08 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Jake Fox is a poor man's Hoffpauir.
Much as I think Hoffpauir isn’t really suited for the role they have him slotted for (pinch hitter/backup OF), he’s better than Fox.
