In Down Economy, Maddux Finds a Job
This is certainly more proof that Peavy will become a Cub very shortly. It is nice to see that Maddux did land a job though.
I'm sure that logistics played a crucial role in his decision, but I really wish he was an instructor in the Cubs organization rather than anywhere else.

Interesting that the Cubs offered him a similar position.
What this has to do with Peavy, I have no idea.

Everything has to do with Peavy!
First he’s singing the Cub theme song in Vegas and now the Cubs have a spy in the organization. The article said that the Cubs “Offered him a similar deal”. They didn’t say for which team the Cubs made the offer for him to instruct with. Maybe the Cubs offered him the Padres instructor job?
The Peavy denial that he didn’t even know the words to the theme song is only more proof that a conspiracy is afoot! I’m sure Roberts will come along as well. This may even make Banks 40 years younger.

Let's make Ernie 50 years younger.
The 38-year-old Ernie had bad knees.

Can we make Kingman 30 years younger...
…and sign him just to take batting practice? Please, please, please???

Methinks Maddog's first "instructions" to Jake Peavy...
…were to dump those bozos and hop a flight to Chi-Town, pronto.
What do YOU think?
Why couldn't the Cubs management
have thought to do this? Aren’t we always saying we need to bulk up our front office?

I don't like this paragraph
Black said the Chicago Cubs, a team Maddux pitched twice for in his career, also offered a similar deal to the 42-year-old, but he chose the Padres.
Well he may just want to work with Peavy and that staff, but I hope this isn’t anything against the Cubs..
#34: You'll be missed!
Honestly
I just think that he wants to stay close to Las Vegas and the West Coast. It’s been his preference for a while now.

True, but...
… working as a spring training instructor, he could have worked for either the Padres or Cubs, because they both train in the Phoenix area.
I guess Peoria is a little closer to Vegas than Mesa, but maybe that wasn’t a factor.

It is about the long term
Don’t think Maddux is just going to show up for a couple of weeks in Spring Training. I am sure he will be around the Padres
during parts of the season. Also to be honest it is better baseball set up for him. The Padres have a low key former pitcher manager and a team with a lot of young pitchers . As mentioned Maddux is interested in "studying " all aspects of coaching which is going to be a lot easier to do with the Padres. One can hold out hope that after he gets in his groove Jim can make him an offer he might consider but don’t hold your breath.

If Maddux is going to be a major league manager...
… that involves travel for half the summer, just as it would for a player. At a certain point his kids will be grown and being “home” near them won’t be as much of an issue for him. How old are his kids now?

I wish it where otherwise but I don't see him working for the Cubs.
I think his boy ( who is the youngest) is 12. Problem is Maddux generally is not a big cold weather fan anyway and if he had a choice between a West Coast team and the Cubs I think he goes West . However he has a few years to think it over
and again I can only hope. I think it is great he is staying in the game and don’t think he will have the slightest trouble adjusting from 10 million dollar HOF pitcher to part time bench coach/pitching advisor. If he does manage someday it will
almost as much fun as watching him pitch.

Sutcliffe had this same job for years.....
…. with the Padres, by virtue of the fact he was their TV color guy for a while. Maddux likely prefers this with the Padres because if it somehow spills over into the regular season, he already lives relatively close by.

I knew about this two weeks ago.
I don’t think the Cubs have much shot at Madog right now. He is a West Coast guy especially with the kids in school and it is easier logistically for him to have a continuing role with the Padres. However I am glad Jim is keeping the Cubs in the mix for future consideration. I am too tired to dig it out but there was nice Maddux quote about wanting to study all aspects of coaching ( hitting etc). Someday he will be a great manager.

Cubs should...........
fire Rothchild/hire Maddux
If you had to choose just one characteristic that would get you through life, choose a sense of humor.
First Maddux is not ready for a full time job
He will only be kind of super consultant coach for Padres and for now only Spring Training is official on his job list.
I expect in the end he will be a manager not a pitching coach.
Now if we can talk the kids into going to college REALLY early ( like next year) perhaps he could take over for Lou.
