A Third Summer Concert At Wrigley Field
We learned yesterday that there will be a second Billy Joel/Elton John concert at Wrigley Field on July 16. But buried in this Jim DeRogatis blog in today's Sun-Times is this note:
The Friendly Confines also will present the country-pop act Rascal Flatts with special guest Darius Rucker (a.k.a. Hootie of the Blowfish) on Saturday July 18. Live Nation did not announce any ticket prices or any details about ticket sales for that show.
Also worth reading in that link is this, about the ridiculous tickets.com fees added to orders:
Finally, it's worth noting that tickets.com is adding service fees to those Billy and Elton tickets that are almost as obnoxious and unreasonable as those routinely tacked on by Ticketmaster--even for the special "neighborhood residents-only" pre-sales. As one correspondent wrote me:Just wanted to let you know that I got Billy Joel/Elton John tix for Wrigley today through the neighborhood presale. I got 4 midlevel tickets and was charged over $90 in service charges by tickets.com, with an additional $4.50 to mail the tickets (cheaper than the $7.50 to print them). During the 2008 baseball season, the service charge for tickets in any section was $4.19 per ticket. Is the frightening future of online ticket sales already here? Does the Ticketmaster merger actually matter? Nothing would make me happier than to see you mention these ridiculous service charges in your column and inspire some outcry.
That's exactly the reason why the Live Nation/Ticketmaster merger should be rejected by the Justice Department. And no, that's not a political statement, it's simply a statement that companies like this should not be allowed to have so much control over one business.

I agree
Not only are these shows over priced, a good ticket for Joel/John in Philly is $197 dollars, the cheapest ticket in Philly is $97 dollars.
But hey the first show sold out in a day, and added another show.
These outlets figure I guess if you are willing to throw down 150 dollars for a show, hey what is another 20 dollars in fees for a ticket.
"Have You heard of the Boom on Mizar 5?"
... but not at Wrigley
Summer concerts are great, and Wrigley is the best baseball venue anywhere, but don’t put them together. I went to a game shortly after the Buffert concert and there were sections of the outfield that were terrible (some bare, a lot of yellow). I realize that was right before the field reconstruction was done. But still, leave Wrigley for baseball, put the summer concerts in Soldier Field. And, now they are talking about three of them?
I don't think these tickets are overpriced
If the venue sells out in a day, then possibly tickets are under priced. No one is forcing you to spend your money. Would you pay $10,000 to see your favorite band? Probably not. Would you spend up to $1000? For a lot of people that answer is “yes.”
Same thing with any sporting event or anything ticketmaster dabbles in. The simple fact is that ticketmaster is losing revenue to lost nation.
The solution is simple. If you can’t afford the product, don’t pay for it. Let the markets decide on the fair price.
the problem is
the service charges, not the actual cost of the tickets.

I'm sorry but they most certainly do not
They are a “corporate band” but that shouldn’t take away from the fact that they are highly trained performers.

Well being a "corporate band" isn't always a bad thing...
I just don’t think they can write a song. Plus my Aunt who knows nothing about music loves them and her taste is just gross. Good for them for being able to sell themselves so well. Their music is just really lame. It’s only my opinion, so it doesn’t really matter but I do strongly feel this way.

I don't want to get too into defending Rascal Flatts
As I’m not really a fan myself. I do think they are outstanding performers though. Sure, their songwritng could be very cheezy, when they don’t just use someone else’s song, but I do think they are above and beyond when it comes to the performance side.

I am a musician
It becomes a matter of style. I am not a fan of Rascal Flatts, but I will agree that they are great performers. I simply don’t like the country style of music. I don’t like Mariah Carey or Michael Jackson’s styles either, for example, but there is no denying their talents. My point is that there are acceptable ways of acknowledging all musical tastes.

Hootie was playing Rib-Fest here in Indianapolis, and doing a pretty good job, IMO. Now he gets to play Wrigley – good for him.

Darius....
opened for a couple acts in Omaha a couple weeks and was REALLY good. His vocal talents are amazing.
BELIEVE!
LOL
I was going to say something along the lines of, “Based on the artists they’ve booked this season, if Wrigley is ever converted to a full-time concert venue, I’ll never go there again.”
But, hey, everyone has different musical tastes. Enjoy.

Exactly.
If you don’t like the artists. don’t go.

How about
If we are afraid of what all these concerts are going to do the playing field? I am. This is MY team it is affecting.

That's a reasonable point, and yes, I'd be concerned, too.
Three concerts is a lot of people tramping on that field.

I'd have to seriously re-consider if it were Heart playing
The other concerts are OK, not my favourites so it wasn’t a big deal to miss any of them.

Screw Them
The merger is a bad idea as it eliminates competition. I might be OK with the merger if it were illegal to have any one company have exclusive ticket sales to an event. I go see shows at The Metro, Double Door, and The Vic often simply because I can go to thier box offices and buy tickets at (Get this!) face value! I shy away from shows at The Riv and The Aragon for that reason and have a distaste for sporting event tickets. .
by jerry morales rules on Feb 19, 2009 11:09 AM CST reply actions
I wonder
if I will be able to buy Billy joel/elton john tickets on the street for far under face value, like I did for the Police shows a couple of years ago. The scalpers took a beating on that one, which I loved!
I predict you will be able to do this.
The tickets are high priced enough that they should price the brokers mostly out of the market. Since there are now two shows, that means about 80,000 tickets available. I’m guessing you’ll find tickets at much more reasonable prices the day of the show.

No, it wasn't a typo.
Only Darius Rucker is appearing. He is, as the article said, “Hootie OF the Blowfish”.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Well, Al's knowledge of
the history of Hootie and the Blowfish may not be quite as acute as yours. I, and I’m sure I’m not alone here, always kinda assumed that Darius was Hootie.

That's what I assumed, too.
All I was saying is that the original article stated that ONE person was appearing with Rascal Flatts, not the entire group. It wasn’t a typo.
It MIGHT have been a mistake, as Arbusto pointed out.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
No mistake
Darius Rucker the lead singer from Hootie and the Blowfish went solo and to country.
He is good, too...
Saw him a couple weeks back and it was great.
BELIEVE!
Elton John and Billy Joel is a great show to have at Wrigley
Not so sure about Rascall Flatts, but thats my opinion.. country music is huge in this country and they are ontop of the game…. Personally I think Dave Matthews Band, the ultimate summer attraction, should play at Wrigley. They LOVE baseball, played at Fenway and in STL.. and have expressed interests in playing at Wrigley… what a show that would be.

WOW WHAT A SEASON!

As long as they don't...
dump their “waste” on the field. We all know how they like to treat our rivers here in Chicago.

On the bright side...
…Wrigley does have that new drainage system.

technically, it wasn't DMB that left that "calling card" - I think it was the bus driver.
as I further recollect, DMB did take responsibility though and made appropriate amends.
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
yea none of the band was on the bus
The driver was going to pick up Lessard the bassist from a downtown hotel to bring him to alpine valley in wisconsin (a show I was actually at) so it was the driver who obviously is now fired.
Funny think about all that, DMB offered to play a free show in Grant Park the following year but Mayor Daley denied the offer…. really dumb denial considering the money that band can bring to the city for the night.. i.e. Central Park show was a free show in New York where an estimated 110,000 people went to the show
WOW WHAT A SEASON!
by SouthsideCUBSfan on Feb 19, 2009 3:07 PM CST up reply actions
yes yes they are
The only thing better than seeing DMB live is seeing them in a venue some how connected to your favorite sports franchise….or at Alpine Valley :)
He was rumored to have played there in 2007.
But his missus popped one out, so he had to be a “good husband.” I think He’s a little overpriced now (seen him three times, all excellent), but I’d fork over the money to see him. I guess this means Hootie won’t be at Ravinia this year. Damn.
"You just don't know understand how frustrating this is"- Kevin Borseth
OK, quick question
I live half a block away from Wrigley. Why do I not get details about the presale for the neighbors? How do I get on that list?
Listen
I’m not exactly for all these concerts during the regular season, like some of you have expressed. I don’t want Wrigley to be looked at as anything less the greatest sports venue in the entire world. With that being said, I know that in today’s economic climate and the transition of the team to new ownership, any additional non-baseball revenue will certainly help the organization as a whole.
Now as long as we don’t slide down that slippery slope into becoming a baseball field/outdoor venue and as long as it doesn’t hurt the considition of the field, I’m cool with it.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
Agreed.
I’m surprised there are going to be three shows this year, plus a minor league game — that uses up all of the Cubs’ extra regular season night dates (unless the minor league game is a day game, which it might be since it’s on a Sunday).
You’re right about the economic climate — the Cubs are looking for every possible additional revenue source. The concerts are probably generating a tremendous amount of income, since the Cubs pocket everything that doesn’t go to the performers.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Also probably the reason they added more Wrigley tour dates this year.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
Well...
… the tour money is supposedly all for Cubs Care.
I’m surprised they don’t do tours every day of the year, at least during the summer when the Cubs are out of town, and they could do morning/early afternoon tours on the days of night games.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
I didn't know that. But I agree with your second point.
Doesn’t the cost of hiring a tour guide off-set the cost they would make on the tour?! I can understand not having tours when the Cubs are in town, where it might prevent a ballplayer from working out in peace, but not out of town games.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I'm sure the cost of paying the tour guides...
… is factored into the cost of the tour. $25 — the current price — is kind of high for similar tours that are given in other ballparks.

Rascal Flatts and Darius Rucker
The first artists to play at Wrigley that didn’t have a hit in the 1970’s. Well, at least these shows are getting somewhat more relevant.
"I've got an idea...an idea so smart my head would explode if I even began to know what I was talking about." ~Peter Griffin
I was hoping for a Len and Bob concert.....
They’d BRING THE HOUSE DOWN!
But really, I’m interested to see what other artists will be slated to play in the coming years.
It’s unlikely, but I would be ecstatic if Rage Against the Machine ever played at Wrigley.

I don't do concerts anymore so my only comment regarding this is
they had better not F-up the field.
Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.
Agreed.
…. on the second part.

THE CONDITION OF THE FIELD
…after those police concerts last year was BRUTAL. but it sure was cool to walk around on the field because i had seats right in front of the stage.
That was the OLD field, before it was completely redone.
The Police concerts weren’t last year, they were in 2007.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
What if
what happens if the dates of a concert are needed to make up a rain out?
what happens if it rains the date of the concert?

The concert dates are during a road trip.
So, there’s no chance of your first scenario.
I don’t have an answer to the other question about rain on the concert date itself.
