Abreau???
I read today that the market is so dry that Abreau will probably accept a one year offer starting at around $7 million. I know it's wishful thinking but imagine an outfield manned by Soriano in left, Bradley in center, and Abreau in right. Fukudome would be the $12 million dollar odd man out, but woud serve as a kickass sub in the likely event of a Soriano/Bradley injury. If the Cubbys had pulled this off, there would be no need for a Dero trade cause we'd be loaded with lefties, and with Dero still in the mix that would be a sick, sick lineup:
Soriano ( still lead off cause the first 5 are all big boppers)
Lee ( less chance of DP in the 2 hole)
Bradley ( Breaks up the 2 power righties)
Ramirez
Abreau ( protects Rami plus left handed; hence, pitcher cant get in groove)
Soto
Dero/Fontenot ( I'm living in the past)
Theriot
Pitcher
I know that it's highly unlikely to happen but hey something to ponder .. .

Not a chance
The budget is stretched thin as it is. Doesn’t Reed Johnson deserve a chance to play once in a while, too? Plus, Fukudome is going to get one more shot to perform.
Not to nitpick, but it’s “Abreu”.

please...
Are you willing sacrifice defense for hitting? Seriously, I dont understand some Cubs fans. Why are you guys undervaluing the importance of defense?! Abreu is one of the WORST defensive OF in the game (and I hope no one even brings up Adam Dunn). Abreu is on a decline and Dunn is not worth 12 million a yr.
To be honest
the Yankees have been punting defense for years and they’ve been winning a few games.
I like baseball.
Ridiculous.
First of all, it’s “Abreu”. Second of all, why would the Cubs sign ANOTHER outfielder, when they’re already paying three guys multiple millions of dollars to play?
This will never happen.

+1
Waaaay to many outfielders as it is. Not a smart decision

Steve Sax, you threw another wild throw to First Base again!
This is not fantasy baseball. Cubs have signed their OF and Fukudome for all your disappointment of him the 2nd half will have a solid if not excellent year in 2009.
Any signings now will be at the $1M or under and fulfill the role left by Cedeno. Only if Garciaparra would take the utility role if Lou held out that he could compete for starting SS.

Oh geez
Get off the guy…
I tell ya, this blog has become so persnickity that a guy can’t even post a thought anymore unless it’s of “GM caliber” in Al’s mind (and don’t forget to get your spelling right in the blogosphere, heaven forbid).
Between his OBSESSION with history and the overt hatred he displays toward the discussion of trade rumors, Al makes this blog virtually intolerable for some.
Discussing a potential trade is one thing,
but proposing something that doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of happening is another. Why don’t we start that A-Rod for Bako post next? No one is forcing you to participate in this blog. If you don’t like the comments, there’s the door.

The other problem...
is Bradley’s health. Are you seriously willing to risk putting Bradley in center, where he’ll be forced to track down a lot more area and possibly watch him tear an ACL?
It’s not worth it. Dont try fixing what aint really that broke.
Just say...
Neau
Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?
Wouldn't that be ....
… “Neaux”?
I mean, with all the Cajuns we have on the team…

Why sign Abreau
when Manny is available. Sure he would cost more, but produces a lot more.
and neither is happening

Zero chance
they couldn’t possibly move Domer and keep a $3.8M in bench players (taking 2 roster spots) in Johnson and Gathwright.

God, we really need to get Spring Training started
so we have other things to talk about besides crazy trade ideas.
ABREU......NEAUX,,,,
No room in the outfield for him and no room in the budget …..The position players roster is already set . I can’t see that changing unless there is a serious injury . And who takes DOME ?? Any takers ?? Just like the auction that no one showed up at …….
Also, Fukudome is not a "kickass" anything.
We’re all hopeful that he’s going to improve, but he was the worst hitting position player in the league for several months.

I would like to have Abreu..
…release Dome’s weak ass and sign Abreu. Not a bad idea. Johnson can platoon in CF with Bradley because Bradley won’t be healthy all season anyway. Drop Dome’s 12m/year contract and get Abreu for cheaper.

"Release Dome"?
Well, if you do that, you’d have to pay him the (approximately) $36 million remaining on his deal. So how is this “cheaper”?

DOME IS ON THE NORTH SIDE FOR NOW....
Let’s hope that DOME can start to swing that bat . He did struggle maybe he can turn it around . I don’t want to throw him under the bus ….
Rumor heard this morning.
Abreu may sign with the White Sox. One year, $8m.

Hm, that's interesting.
Where would he play, though? They still have Quentin in left and Dye in right. Can Abreau play centerfield at this point?

Could Quentin play CF?

He couldn't be much worse than what they've been marching out there. He plays
a descent outfield and they would certainly be an offensive force with that lineup in that park. They have a few question marks in the infield to solve first.

Quentin doesn't strike me as a centerfielder...
…but I’m not all that familiar with the guy. Someone light the Crawdad beacon.

He would on a slowpitch softball roster. That sems like the type
of roster Kenny wants. Bashers all around.

Ha ha.
I first read that and saw “Crawdad Bacon.” At noon, my thought was I don’t know what that is, but it may be tasty.
Something tells me...
…that’s on the menu at certain Louisiana eateries.

Lumbering jacks...
Any combination of Dye-Abreu-Quentin in the OF would be ugly. Signing Abreu would no doubt mean Dye or Konerko were getting traded. But I don’t understand why any team would trade for Dye when you could get presumably sign Abreu for less money and not have to trade away anyone.
Could Quentin play CF? Yes, I suppose in a crunch. But he’s not a CF. He doesn’t have the speed or range. And putting Quentin between two “old” guys (Dye & Abreu) wouldn’t be doing him any favors. If you move Quentin anywhere it should be to RF.
Abreu has played a few games in CF, but he hasn’t played CF regularly in 7 years (even then it was only 18 games).
The only way the Sox should sign Abreu is if Dye, Konerko or Thome gets traded.
Thanks!
That’s kinda what I thought about Quentin. Is there any possibility Thome might retire? I haven’t heard or read any mention of it, but I obviously don’t follow the Sox that closely.
We are a fever ... we are a fever ... we ain't born typical.
Maybe next year...
… but Thome’s under contract and while he’s not as effective as he was earlier in his career he’s still an offensive force.
