The Winning Cubs Wristband Number Is 08396
If you have a wristband that's within 1000 numbers of that one (going upward -- if you're just behind it in sequence, you may as well head to your keyboard and telephone, starting at 10 am CT), you should go to Wrigley Field NOW -- you'll be one of the first in line to get tickets when the box office opens at 8 am CT.
For the rest of the day, this thread will serve as your point for complaints, compliments, success stories, abject failure, blowing off steam, whatever you experience on Ticket On-Sale Day. Please don't start dozens of posts on ticket topics; let's consolidate everything here.
Good luck!

Numbers
How long does it usually take to service the next group (which I would be in)? Will they get to them before the 10am online ticketing?
by DrunkenSuperman on Feb 20, 2009 6:13 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
depends on how many they gave out
and how fast they move. According to a friend last year they called the first 1500 before 10 but that does not mean they were actually buying tickets. He also reported that the fist game “fell” at 10.15 and Saturdays were gone by about 1 ( this was all for bleachers).
Good luck

250-500 numbers an hour was last year's pace
it moves faster as the day goes on – I think it was up to about 8,000 from the winning number at the end

#12,000
any point in going up there today or is it VWR time for me?
by KButler on Feb 20, 2009 6:25 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Depends what you want
Based on previous years that number should get you in by mid to late afternoon. Bleacher tickets for most weekends will be gone
for June, July August . There may be some April or Sept weekends ( Sundays really) may be left. Non bleacher tickets probably about the same. If you need say a night game NOT against Brewers, Cardinals , White Sox , those SHOULD still be available.

Good luck to all of you buying today
Today’s result should give everyone a good luck on how the economy might affect the cubs in the near future.
I for one will not be buying today. I have a stable job and same salary, but I’m cautious by nature and feel too hesitant to plunk down money for a weekend in Chicago five months in advance. I will wait to get tickets as it comes closer, and take my chances then.
I don’t think that I’ll be alone in this approach.
by TC Cubby on Feb 20, 2009 7:02 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
and a good look, too
[good luck]
In the past, this day was a play hooky day for me. I would set up my three laptops and wait….anxiously….in the VWR.
Not this year. I’m at work. I may attempt to get a few tickets to some summer weekend games. If I don’t get them, I’ll try my luck in the Ticket Exchange or StubHub as the day draws nearer.
Good luck to everybody!

Today is a sad day for me
I’m fortunate that I am gainfully employed, but I can’t take a chance of spending a few thousand $$$ for my usual allotment of tickets. I don’t know if I can spend my weekends in Chicago (I’m from Florida) due to the current economic climate.

Seriously, you may wait for hours
Open up several [many] windows. Do not refresh. It will automatically refresh every 30 seconds. Maybe it was 60 seconds, I can’t remember.
I cut and paste the url into a separate new window every 10-15 seconds to space it out. I don’t know if that actually does anything, but I’ve been lucky enough to get tickets in the past doing this.
The primo games go first.
By mid-afternoon, you’ll be getting in a regular basis, but the game choices are not as good.
Tickets start showing up on StubHub, eBay, and Craigslist shortly after 10:10 AM. LOL.

If you're lucky enough to get in and you go for Saturday's game first
you should have a shot at that one.
August/September games don’t sell out as quickly as June-July-August weekend games.
Are you going for the entire weekend series?
Also, do you already have your account set up with MLB? That’s important. You don’t want to waste time inputting your information.

signifies the start of the season is just around the corner. I’ve taken this day off from work the past 5 years. I actually don’t mind the VWR and have never had any issues getting tickets. They said on channel 9 that they are posting what number exactly they are on, on the cubs website. Anyone see this? Only numbers I see are the 8396 – 10396.
by chicagodave on Feb 20, 2009 9:00 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Well...
… obviously, they can’t sit there and update each time a number is being served. They have called 08396-10396 to come to the park now. That’s more than in previous years (usually, the first group is only 1000, not 2000).
They’ll update this probably by 11 am or noon, to call the next group.

Not really
Any other browsing is fine because it’s blazing fast for loading pages. This though, it’s set to reset every 15 seconds, so it’s working as well as my Firefox and IE windows. I’ll let you know how it works if I get into the ticketing portion with a Chrome window.

I’m not geeky enough to bust out a stopwatch and time it though, but other websites have documented a speed difference. I do a lot with graphic design and stuff, so if I’m loading high-res images and downloading them for use in a work, I’m definitely using Chrome.

Take it from a father of a 3 yr old and a 2 yr old
anything over 1 should get a ticket. It’s hard enough keeping them entertained at the game. Buying the extra seat gets you a half hour of “I’ll be quiet because I’m cool and I have my own seat to get in and out of”

This happens to me every year on ticket day. I set up three or four computers with two or three browsers open on each. Then at 10:00 I start dialing the phone. I always get through by calling before any of the browsers get through. Today I had tickets for two games by 10:30 without ever getting through the VWR.

It feels weird, and I’m not bragging (much) but I have a friend who has season tickets and he is selling me 5 games worth. Also, a buddy who I convinced to get a wristband yesterday got in this morning 800 #’s from the start and bought the other 4 games we wanted. But I feel strange—the pathos, the angst, the waiting of the VWR…I kind of miss it. My day off (taken for this express purpose) feels…anti-climactic.

Summing up these comments
The system does appear to be more stressed than in years past. Perhaps the refreshing every 15 seconds is one reason.
The good news is that games are probably selling out slower, since it takes each order longer to process.

It's not a "limit"...
… that means only single seats are left in those sections. That’s why few games are listed as sold out yet — there are probably singles available for most games.
Opening Day and 7/11 are sold out, as far as I can tell.

Here's an alternate idea to the VWR hell...
The Cubs visit the Tigers in mid-June. Single game Tiger tickets go on sale March 7, BUT- you can purchase a mini-season ticket plan of 6 games NOW- and choose three of the games as the Cubs/Tigers series. You could then sell off the rest or if you have a relative in Michigan, get them to go in on the packet WITH you. They could choose 3 other games that fit their interests.
Not the same as Wrigley, but for the price of one night’s lodging in Chicago (let alone game tickets), I got 2 box seat tickets to all three Cubs/Tigers games.
Just a thought…

Saturday rules?
I am still trying on the VWR, and unfortunately holding a wristband in the 4300s. John Williams said this morning that there were 20,000 wristbands, so I guess that puts me about 16,000th in line.
However, what are the rules on the box-office for Sat.? Are wristbands honored? Is it worth it to go early?
by pinkpony on Feb 20, 2009 11:42 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
No wristbands after today.
But, most of the more desirable games will be sold out.
About wristbands, they did print 20,000, but I’m guessing less than half of them were distributed.

VWR is a nightmare
after waititng patiently for 3 hours with about 20 windows open, i finally got in only to get the infamous “We’re sorry, we were unable to process your request due to high transaction volumes. Please try to submit your request again” then i get kicked out and back to the VWR ;-(

85 more VWRs opening up
I just got my fifth and final game, all the week of Memorial Day. 2 vs the Pirates, 3 vs the Dodgers. Couldn’t get anything better than Terrace Reserved Infield – dodging poles. Those 13pack and 9pack games they sold these past 2 years have hurt the availability. Not too reasonable for this Mississippi kid to buy tickets to 13 random games…
Question on the will call. I had mine mailed to me, but I’d like the Cubs printed tickets. Next year, if I left them at will call, can I pick up all my games at once, or would I be at will call every day.

You can pick up all your games at once if you choose will call.

No seriously F#&$ YOU!
So I finally get in.
I got four about 3 or 4 games and I’m not getting any luck. Lots of “Server is too busy to process your request” put in your entry again kind of thing. I finally settle on a game that I want and go to buy the tickets.
The screen to type in the numbers to confirm takes me three or four times to get correct.
I finally get to enter my information. I’m off by 1 letter on my address because it’s telling me I have a time limit and I rushed the typing. I have to go back and now I’ve got 3 minutes to enter everything. It couldn’t have been more than 1 minute and I enter my stuff.
The tickets I want are no longer on hold for me and they send me back to the virtual waiting room. Seriously, what the hell?! Listen, I want to buy the tickets from you. I’m a good paying customer, not some scalper. By rushing me, you might have helped another scalper get in. I seriously don’t understand why I need to be so rushed. Are they worried that the most of the tickets for today won’t sell out by the end of the day?! And please don’t kick me back to virtual waiting room. I clearly want to buy tickets. Thanks for kicking me out and rushing me so some scalper with 100 tabs up can come in and buy his tickets. Just go to hell. Quite a model you have going here.
by IllinoisCubs on Feb 20, 2009 1:00 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
its actually quite simple.
Just sign up for an MLB.com account. It saves all you info. Then once you purchase your tixs you only have to confirm the email. That way you dont feel rushed.

crazy day
Okay, so I have had a single window open that i started with at 9:30. No Action on it at all. I opened a bunch of windows up at like noon and one of those windows let me buy tickets within 5 minutes. That single window that I opened earlier, still no chances. CRAZY.
I got three bleacher seats to Sunday game against the Indians.
by SammySosa on Feb 20, 2009 1:02 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
That's how it goes
Had I only opened up 8 windows, I still would not be selected. I had 45 open on my computer (picked twice in 3hrs), and 35 that I opened later on my wife’s computer (picked three times in 2hrs). I had 45 open for an hour, and my wife’s computer was the first to get picked – within 5min of opening.
by sparky39762 on Feb 20, 2009 1:05 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
One window! HA!
that would be insane to have to wait for one window. pure torture. I never have less than like 90 windows open on multiple computers.

I give up
This is crazy. I have gone to several games every year and always buy my tickets online and really haven’t had any problems. This year I have been in the VWR since 9:30 and have not gotten in once. I am frustrated and annoyed.

There is.
The White Sox have a waiting room by game and not a single room for everyone. It’s much better if you’re not going for Opening Day, Cubs/Sox, and the like.
…of course I’m always better, because I’ve never once gotten through the VWR to be able to purchase tickets in the first 6 hours they’re on sale, regardless of the number of windows open, etc. Fortunately, I tend to like seeing the Nationals, so I can get tickets next week without too much worry (although bleechers are often sold out).
by MarchHare on Feb 20, 2009 1:20 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
That's because the Sox use Ticketmaster instead of tickets.com
Ticketmaster has a far better interface. I’ve always had better luck with Ticketmaster, especially for concerts.

Two Friends And I...
..netted either 4 or 6 tickets across 23 games using this method:

One friend was at home using his and his 3 roommates computers simultaneously, and got about half of those himself.
Best catches:
7/2 vs Brewers – 6 Bleachers
7/3 vs Brewers – 4 Grandstand
7/4 vs Brewers – 4 Grandstand
7/11 vs Cards – 4 Grandstand
7/12 vs Cards – 10 Bleachers
Also got games with Marlins, Astros, Dogers, Twins, Phillies, Pirates, Indians, Braves, Mets and Reds.
Way psyched, best luck ever this year. Hope everybody else made out just as well, and have a great weekend!

ticket line story
I first waited in line all night when the bleacher tickets were $2.50. My brother was making a lot of money at the time, and I was trying to pay for college. The night was cold as hell, and exhaustive. Made many good freinds though, and we shared whiskey, rum, beer, and multiple trips to yum yum donuts.
I ended up getting 8 tickets to every game (there were four games that I only got 4 – cards). I lived on Addison near Lakewood that summer, attended nearly 50 games, and I think if given the chance, I would do it all again, divorce attorney on retainer.
