Mt. Rushmore for the Cubs
Does anyone else hate the 'Mt. Rushmore' gimick that ESPN has been beating to death over the last month or so? Anyways, here is the Mt. Rushmore of the Cubs.
Ernie Banks, Harry Caray, Ryne Sandberg, Sammy Sosa.
Wow, ESPN. Thank you for this glorious insight into the history of our team and sport. Your efforts are unmatched. I applaud you!

Stolen from Sports Guy.
ESPN sucks.
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
Simmons had noted time and time again that he thought of Rushmore+sports and ESPN literally took it away from him without recognition. Thanks for your sarcasm, though!

I am aware that he has said he thought of that.
But saying it doesn’t make it true. My God, when I was in 5th grade, we did a Mt. Rushmore of shortstops (wish I was joking). The idea came from a T-shirt a friend of ours had that had a basketball Mt. Rushmore on it. For the life of me, I can’t remember the theme, but I think it was college hoops centers.
And you’re welcome for the sarcasm. :D
P.S. I’m not 100 percent sure on this, but I believe we settled on the Wizard, Ripken, Trammel and Larkin (it was 1991).
I feel dumber for having read this. Thanks.

Simmons has since corrected himself
Rick Reilly was doing it long before and Simmons said so on a more recent podcast.
It must have killed him to say that. My guess is that Reilly pitched a major fit. It’s one thing for Simmons to take shots at Reilly being a sentimental hack, but to call someone a plagiarist is beyond the pale.
Simmons needs to grow the frick up already. He signed a contract. No one made him do it. Shut up, write about Teen Wolf, and stop bitching.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Gee, I just love his condescending picks.
Harry Caray is a broadcasting legend, and deservedly so, but he didn’t play on the frickin’ field. (Connotation: The Cubs didn’t have great players! They’re all about drinkin’ Bud and singin’ “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”!) And his mention of Sammy is an obvious twist-the-knife-in-the-back jibe about steriods.
I’d substitute Ron Santo for Caray and someone a little more current for Sammy – maybe Kerry Wood or Big Z.
Happy ST Opening Day, everyone!
i'd pick wood
over z. but that’s just me.

No Harry ...
… suprised they didn’t put RWW, — typical of a national media perspective.
For me it would Williams, Santo, Banks, Jenkins.
Brickhouse Over Caray
Even though, I saw about 10 times as many Harry Caray games with the Cubs as Jack Brickhouse games, Brickhouse would be a much better choice than Caray for this Mt. Rushmore. Jack had 40 years with the Cubs (of which I caught the tail end) versus only 16 for Harry.

Actually, Brickhouse was with the Cubs for 34 seasons...
… 1948-1981.

I'd say keep it on the field
No announcers. Santo would be on as a player.

With Announcers Excluded...
I would go with Frank Chance, Gabby Hartnett, Ernie Banks, and Ryne Sandberg.
I wouldn’t have room for Fergie Jenkins, Billy Williams, Mordecai Brown, Kiki Cuyler, Ron Santo, Sammy Sosa, Billy Herman, Joe Tinker, and Johnny Evers.
"The big possums walk late." - Harry Caray
not a bad list
Ryno’s my all-time favorite, but Billy and Ron should be in first.

Agreed..
Sweet Swingin Billy has to be there,,Jenkins as well…and the fact the Cubs had a statue of an anouncer outside the stadium well before their best player is embarassing. I’d petition the Ricketts family to move the statue of the announcer to outside the resturaunt that bears his name..
The journey is the reward!
I'd be on board with that

The four that I would pick
would be Banks, Williams, Santo and Sandberg

Cap Anson, Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandberg, and Frank Chance
Too many to only have four!
#34: You'll be missed!
While Anson was a good ball player
His off-the-field stances would keep him off of my Mt. Rushmore, personally.

well I'm sure if you learned about the opinions of most baseball players off the field you'd find them just as unrespected
still, I think it should just be how you were on the field in this instance…
#34: You'll be missed!
Fair enough.
It’s just that Anson was at the forefront of the movement that sticks in my craw.
That said, keeping it on the field, he would be a deserving choice.

yeah, even though he was probably rolling in his grave when Jackie started playing!
#34: You'll be missed!
Yeah, I don't like him or that movement, either
Even in the context of the era, he was a jerk in that regard.

I'd go Sandberg, Banks, Mordecai Brown, Sosa.
No need to overlook the Cubs’ history for Harry Caray, IMO.

agreed, Harry didn't even play a single game of Cubs baseball (or any baseball for all I know)
He was just an announcer…
#34: You'll be missed!
Brown, Hartnett, Banks, Sandberg
That’s four from four different eras of Cubs history, all Hall of Famers.

Works for me.
Of course, far be it for us to expect an ESPN guy to think things through that deeply.
Happy ST Opening Day, everyone!
Hack Wilson?
had a few RBI’s that deserves some thought

Not a long enough Cub career, and...
… basically had four great Cub seasons and that’s it. Plus, the 1930 year was an offensive freak.

Glad for MLB Network
The fact that ESPN spends most of their time on crap like this during their Sportscenter and Baseball Tonight broadcasts makes me glad that I have another well produced media outlet for information about my favorite sport. From what i’ve seen from the MLB network thus far, i’m pretty sure i’m going to be watching their programing throughout the year much more than ESPN. Though I would argue that I watch much more Comcast Sports Net, mainly because the games are actually on that channel.
I agree re: MLB Network.
I’ve been extremely impressed with them so far.

Yeah, I don't see myself spending much time on ESPN...
…now that I have MLB Network. Their MLB Tonight show looks like it’s going to be fantastic during the regular season. I may have to start sleeping on the couch.
Happy ST Opening Day, everyone!
Ken Burns 'Baseball' and Baseball Seasons
Two things I really like about the MLB Network. They have been replaying Ken Burns’ Baseball. This is the perfect show to DVR and watch throughout the week because it is so long. The Baseball Seasons show is fantastic. They do a really good job of talking about the era of the game as well as giving a good idea of what happened in the league that season. My only complaint is that neither of these programs talk about the Cubs very much :-(
The Ken Burns series
should be mandatory viewing for young baseball players. Things weren’t always as they are now. It’s a great peek into how the game has changed but also how we’ve changed socially, culturally, and economically over the last 100+ years. There is a lot to be learned and appreciated this series of documentaries. I think I saw on MLB network that Burns is working on extra innings (each documentary is named 1st inning, 2nd inning, etc.) to get caught up through the ’90’s.

Unfortunately, yes.

Sandberg, Santo, Banks, Brown
Santo is more of a Chicago Cubs announcing legend than Harry was, plus he played for the team as well!

Brant Brown?
I know, I know…Mordaci Brown

No, you were right the first time
who is this Modaci guy?
"Prince Fielder Dies Of Inside-The-Park Homerun" - The Onion
I chose Hartnett because...
… at the time he retired, he was considered the best catcher in NL history.
Even today, only Bench and Piazza rank higher.

What!?! No Pat Cline?
The catcher so good, that Lynch refused to trade him for Randy Johnson?

Get over it, people
Sosa is on the list. We hate him now, but he was the most popular for a big generation of Cubs.
I have no problem with Harry Caray being on the list. There is a freaking statue of him outside and that cariacture is at the stadium.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
The statue is a joke....
Not even the fact that it was before Banks, which was bad enough.
An announcer. Who’s best years were in St. Louis. Who was incompetent for 1/2 his Cubs tenure.

Oh, I get it
But if you’re asking a bunch of East Coasters to pick, they are going to look at the statue and say, “Harry’s there”
I’d put Santo instead of Harry, but I have no problem with Sandberg, Sosa and Banks being the other three.
Let’s just be thankful they didn’t put Bartman or a goat.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
I think we all would have helped.
