Slightly OT-Fantasy Baseball

My annual fantasy league consisting of friends and coworkers has its live draft this weekend. I feel like I have a strategy in mind in trying to repeat as champion, but I respect a lot of you in here as having great baseball minds and am curious to see how others' think about this. Besides, a little input never hurt anyone!

So, to all of you who partake in fantasy baseball, who is or who will be your #1 pick this year?

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Hanley Ramirez

Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.

Especially if one of your categories is "scrappiness".

Or Jimmy Rollins

Rollins

is clearly inferior to those two in my mind, but he’s definitely a first round pick in a 12 team league. I wouldn’t consider him with the #1 pick in a draft.

Jimmy Rollins isn't rated very high if I recall...

but he is a definite sleeper.

Rollins will have a hell of a year compared to last.

I wish I could duplicate my team from last year.

Bobby Abreu (LAA – OF)
Miguel Cabrera (Det – 1B,3B)
Curtis Granderson (Det – OF)
Josh Hamilton (Tex – OF)
J.J. Hardy (Mil – SS)
Ryan Ludwick (StL – OF)
Justin Morneau (Min – 1B)
Dustin Pedroia (Bos – 2B)
Albert Pujols (StL – 1B)
Aramis Ramírez (ChC – 3B)
Hanley Ramírez (Fla – SS)
Brian Roberts (Bal – 2B)
Álex Ríos (Tor – OF)
Geovany Soto (ChC – C)

Ryan Dempster (ChC – SP,RP)
Rich Harden (ChC – SP)
Scott Kazmir (TB – SP)
Brad Lidge (Phi – RP)
Mike Mussina (NYY – SP)
Jake Peavy (SD – SP)
Joakim Soria (KC – RP)
José Valverde (Hou – RP)
Edinson Vólquez (Cin – SP)

(I picked Hanley first and, somehow, I bombed the playoff week and placed 3 out of 6)

This is your team from last year??

Were you in a 4 man league? I count no less than 5 first and second round picks – Pujols, Hanley, Peavy, Cabrera, and Kazmir, Morneau, Pedroia, Aramis, Roberts…pretty sure that league didn’t work out like regulation…

Some people may or may not have been idiots when it comes to baseball.

i'm thinking

ramirez, reyes, rollins, or wright. someone with power, speed, or both.

by nathew on Feb 27, 2009 6:47 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I would go...

ramirez, utley, pujols, or berkman

I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!

Not Utley for first pick this year

He will be out the first few weeks at least.

Both Ramirez and Reyes may bat third to start the year. More ribbies, fewer stolen bases would be my guess.

he's on track to start.....

the season! big reason I will think about taking him if I have a top pick is because of his production at the 2b position vs every other option out there. Berkman was really valuable last year because he was an option in the OF or at 1st.

Hanley Ramirez. 5-tool player, rumored to have had a great off-season, and he’s sexy. My other two two would be Pujols and A-Rod. I would take David Wright over Jose Reyes, too. And the top three pitchers are Johan, Lincecum, and Hamels.

The real question

is whether I go with RotoWorld’s or Baseball Prospectus’ fantasy guides this year. Decisions decisions.
