Interesting signing

Koskie hasn’t played since the middle of the 2006 season and will turn 36 this June. This is a pretty low risk signing and if he is over the post concussion syndrome he could be a lefty bad off the bench with a bit of pop and the ability to play 3B.

can he play

any outfield?

He played 25 games in RF in 1999.

So the answer is, probably not. Why would we need him to play OF?

I am very happy with this signing

I have always liked Koskie. It may be because he’s a fellow Manitoba boy, but I’ve always liked his work ethic and attitude

Promising move

If Corey Koskie is healthy enough and can still demonstrate an ability to hit, then he solves this team’s need for another infielder who can pinch in at 3rd base and 1st base. So assuming the Cubs break camp with 11 pitchers (before bumping up to 12 at the end of April), that might leave the following bench…

Reed Johnson
Joey Gathright
Paul Bako
Aaron Miles / Mike Fontenot
Micah Hoffpauir (who would be most in jeopardy of getting sent down with 12th pitcher arrives)

While I think its a good signing...

…i still like the idea of breaking camp with hoff and fox. koskie hasnt played in awhile and i think hes better off going to iowa and if the cubs need him then call him. i don’t think he should be on the major league roster to start the season though

It won't be Hoff AND Fox.

They are competing for the same spot. It may be that Koskie isn’t quite ready, in which case he could go to Iowa.

But if he IS ready, he’s a better player than Hoffpauir.

bleh

I don’t know how much you can realistically expect from Koskie. Add in that, at his best, he was a platoon guy that could hammer righties, but if you assume for some natural age-related regression, how much value does he offer offensively. Now, if he shows something, great. I wouldn’t be surprised if he starts at Iowa, though, and gets cut at some point.

Still, on a minor league deal...

… it’s almost no risk, with considerable upside. It’s kind of the poor man’s Edmonds signing.
