Spring Training Plans/Tips

As I sit here in Indiana watching the snow pile up yet again, I can't help but wish Spring Training was here and I was sitting on the berm at Hohokam under the warm Arizona sun.

This got me wondering about other traditions, plans, and activities that people have when they go out to Arizona to see Spring Training.  This will be my second year, and last time I went to 6 games in 5 days-including a Cubs/Sox game in Tucson.  I went to Fitch park briefly, climbed Squaw Peak, and tailgated with a wide range of people in Tucson and Peoria.

I got to talk to Carmen Pignatello and Jon Lieber before a game, and I got Rich Hill to sign a baseball-ironically it was a Minor League Baseball by accident.  Overall, not much beats sitting in the sun getting a tan while watching baseball for $8 while everyone at home is wearing winter coats hoping it doesn't snow again.

I know there is a BCB Special on the side about Spring Training, but it hasn't been updated in quite awhile.  So I thought this might be a way for people to think Spring and give others ideas for things to do in Arizona this Spring.

Please let us know what you do in AZ for SP, any thoughts on the best ballparks, tips or suggestions on where or what to do to make the most of the trip.

HIGHLY suggest...

A hike on Camelback Mountain! Great fitness hike… I think I recall Dempster calling this his training trail last Spring Break – he RAN it! The wife and I hit the trail last year and WOW… it’s a good one. We were able to run most of it, but needed to take our time on a rather steep section.
Bring plenty of water (a camelback or hydration back), a light snack, and a camera. Happy trails!

Dempster is supposedly training on Camelback Mountain again this year.

It’s a tough trail. If you want to hike but want an easier trail, try Piestewa Peak, which is west of Scottsdale, north of downtown Phoenix, easy to get to, plenty of parking, and has several trails that you can easily hike in a couple of hours, with great views of the entire valley from the top.

I mainly veg by the hotel pool when I am not at games

I suppose I should get around more . Maybe we should also note when we will be there so we can at least say HI at games. I will be there 3/25-31 though the 25th is an off day and the 26th is a night game so more time to veg by the pool.

Try the Mondrian hotel in Scottsdale!

They have an AMAZING pool with waitresses and all. It’s located in a nice part of Scottsdale and Hohocam is a $15 cab ride.

A bit past my budget I suspect

Best deal for me is Motel6 in Scottsdale. bare bones but fine and an INCREDIBLE location. You can walk to pretty much any place in downtown Scottsdale. I am SO happy I can get a tolerable bagel and NY Times in the morning.

Same routine every year. The last week in March.

Every year mine and 4 other families have the same block of hotel rooms. We go to the last Cubs/Sox game of ST. Hang out by the pool, order Long Wongs for dinner at least twice and all the guys go to the Black Angus once. Of course we also go to our fair share of bars at night. All in all its a great week

I'll be there...

… from March 23 through the end of spring training on April 2. Find me on the LF lawn at Mesa, and also on the lawn at road games (except for the A’s park in Phoenix, which has no lawn).

I went last year

and it was an absolute blast. But I can generally only get away for a weekend, and that makes for a really expensive weekend.

tailgate at HoHoKam is a priority with the guys

probably the best of all the ST sites, especially by the huge trees along Center St. But that’s the all-guys trip. Play some catch early (by 9AM), then it’s hill-billy golf and beer darts. We may head to the heart attack grill in Chandler the first night to start things off.

http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4632991n

I was going to suggest this place to the dude that does the “Man vs Food” show on Travel Channel, but it’s no challenge for him. He snarfed the 72oz steak & complete meal at the Amarillo TX place in TWENTY NINE MINUTES.

I have 3 trips every ST. Another is visiting my military cousin in Tucson and doing a day at the Army base an hour SE of Tucson. He and I hike up Camelback one morning before a Cubs game. Plus we absolutely have to play a full 18 holes and usually have a sunrise t-time another day.

Finally #3 is the kids spring break. We own a timeshare in Scottsdale and that’s total hang out by the pool, a minimum of 3 Cubs games, visiting other family members and old colleagues, playing a little [mini] golf and frisbee golf with the kids and turning the wife and kids loose for shopping another day while I can tailgate one game.

Heart Attack Grill

is about 1/2 mile from where I work. It is the lamest excuse for a restaurant I have ever been in, Totally worthless. If you want to grab some lunch and ogle some women, I would recommend the Tilted Kilt instead.

There are several Tilted Kilt locations

“Tilted Kilt locations are Tempe, Scottsdale, Peoria and Mesa: all of which have Spring Training parks, as luck would have it. Check out this: ”http://www.tiltedkilt.com/index.html" target="_blank">http://www.tiltedkilt.com/index.html

Enjoy ogling but you can do that for a lot less on the lawn at HoHoKam.

Yeah, know about the lawn, especially behind the walkway

Tilted Kilt may be an option to Heart Attack. Again, never been to Heart Attack but now I’ve heard it ain’t all that. Plus while I know I can eat the 8,000 quadruple bypass, I’d rather spread those calories over 2-3 days instead of just 1 hour or so.

Thanks for the details.

From March 1st through the 7th. First time going to ST. Long overdue. We’re renting a house in Scottsdale for the week. Already have tickets to a few games, might end up trying to get some more. I can’t wait.

Nothing like it

for me this will be 12 years going. My break is early this year which I hate but it beats the snow. March 12-19 for me. I’m looking forward to Cubs at Dodgers in the new ball park in Glendale. Always like to see the new digs. I’ll always be on the berm in front of the scoreboard, no better place to be in March!

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

I'll be there...

March 18th thru the 23rd. I personally reccomend the lawn. There is just something about laying back on a (pink) blanket and watching baseball that screams “Spring Training” to me. I tried the whole “Reserved Seat” thing a few times last year and it just isnt the same…go with the lawn.

Is when we go without fail for the last 6 years (Since my sophmore year in college).
We’ll be there 16-21 7 games including the Cubs @ Sox in Glendale. Got all my tix and printed off plenty of pages for my scorebook. After Cubs games the misses and I can be found at Sluggos (Now Diamonds). In Tempe we usually hit up an Irish Pub called Rulla Bulla, right on Mill Ave near ASU. And we always end up having dinner and drinks at the Pink Pony in Scottsdale.

Town of Cave Creek is really cool . About one mile Stretch is nothing but bars and restaurants , and western stores for the wife .. There is a GREAT Mexican restaurant on north side of street by an old western looking shops and the Satisfied Frog bar and resaurant .. I can’t think of the Mexican Restaurant name . It’s right across the street form Satisfied Frog . You can’t miss it . The place is so authentic looking Spanish / Mexican the the Mexiacan horn blowers and guitarist . Also have a pond in the middle of it . It’s an half inside / outside place . you will think your in Mexico . I highly recommend the restaurant and Cave Creek .. It’s about 12 miles north of Scottsdale . Take Scottsdale road north to carefree highyway turn left two miles . I give the Cave Creek 5 stars

To StevenABQ

While your in Glendale after the Sox game . You will be on the 101 . As they call it here the one oh one . You will exit Camelback road to go to Sox game . After Sox game get back on 101 and go north about two / three miles . Really just look for space ship . I mean University of Phoenix stadium . Where the super bowl was held last year . on the property is a bunch of brand new restaurants and bars JIMMY BUFFET Margirtiaville , some steak houses , Sushi , Indian food . A microbrewery . Outbacks , and a few others . Also jobbing arena is there for the coyotes hockey team . The city of Glendale is trying to make it a one stop for all on the property . It is called WESTGATE … I think they even have their own website ..

Hey

How about “hole in the wall” joints. You know the kind that get the red label from the health department, have been around forever, but are damn great to eat at? Anything like that you’d recommend? I’m also down for bars like that too, you know neighborhood joints…but nothing too scary. I was told to drop by Mollys in Mesa by a buddy from one of the local pubs here — but a local I met at Sluggos told me it was a gun n knife place.

Glad you asked . called TEXAZ . Hole in the wall . But a GREAT place to eat . Our favorite Resaurant / Bar .. Must get JIM"S SPECIAL it’s a ribeye steak .. Not expensive at all .. On the east side of Phoenix and easy to get to . from Tempe . Just take hwy 51 or now it’s called Piestewa highway . Take 51 north to Indian school road . Exit west actually thats the only way to exit because of mountain .. just go one block west on Indian School to 16 th street . On the northeast corner of Indian School and 16th . Hole in the wall for ambiance . but I give a 5 star for the Jims special .

Anyone been to Hi Corbett field in Tucson?

I think I might be in Tucson on a business trip in mid-March. I’ve been to Tucson Electric before but never to the Rockies facility. Has anyone checked that out and is it worth it (aside from checking it off my list of ballparks)?

On a side note, the Titan Missile Museum (http://www.titanmissilemuseum.org/) is a very interesting visit if you are heading to southern Arizona and recall seeing “Duck & Cover” back in school. Probably not worth a special trip from Mesa, though, unless you have a particular interest in that kind of thing.

by MarchHare on Feb 4, 2009 10:30 AM CST reply actions   0 recs

I've been to Hi Corbett.

It’s OK… nothing special. No lawn seats there, and you should arrive early or you’ll be parking at a shopping mall 1/2 mile away (advantage: free).

You might want to check it out as I suspect this may be the last year of spring training in Tucson… my guess is that the Rockies and D’backs exercise the option they have to exit Tucson now that only two teams are left there.

If you want to experience baseball in an old fashioned park this is it.

You really feel like you are in a small town when inside this park which is why I like it. TEP is really nice but it’s more modern. Parking is a pain and as Al said, you may end up in a mall parking lot a half mile away but they usually provide free bus transportation to the park and back. If it’s a nice day, and it usually is, I just walk it.

Claim Jumper

is my new favorite followed by Don and Charlies. Fox Sports Grill (?) I think is the name is a good one. Best sports bar during NCAA is O’Sullivans in Mesa; if you like bar food happy hour is extremely cheap with appy’s all half off. They will put on any NCAA game for you to watch and usually fans from that team (especially midwest teams) will gather to watch.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

In and Out

Pretty damned hard to beat – fresh ingredients – and cheap, perfect for and early lunch before a day game.

Just had my first this past weekend

I can’t recommend it enough to anyone who has never had one before.

Inn And Outs

are springing up all over the Phx area. There are two within a 3-4 mile radius of Hohokam and soon there will be one even closer.

by azjazzman on Feb 4, 2009 3:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Hopefully the quality will hold up with so many springing up

Though I like traveling the West knowing I can find In-n-Out in most cities.

Quality Control

is one of the hallmarks of Inn And Out. You can walk into any restaurant and the food/service will be indistinguishable from any other one.

by azjazzman on Feb 4, 2009 3:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's what I like about it.

As long as that holds up, I’ll be in one whenever I’m out west.

How times have changed

I can remember when I was a kid, all I heard about from the Chicago people that came out for ST was Coors Beer, because they couldn’t get it east of the Mississippi.

Now it is Inn and Out Burgers. SIgn of the times, I guess LOL

by azjazzman on Feb 4, 2009 4:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Cool

But it is “In N Out” correct?

by StevenABQ on Feb 4, 2009 5:03 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yup

I remember back in the 70’s when people would wear the T-shirt and white out the letters so it would read In-N-Out URGE.

I must be in the minority

but I just don’t see the big deal about their burgers. I like Whataburger or Sonic better and you don’t have to fight the crowds either.

by tucsoncubsfan on Feb 4, 2009 5:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well

I like Whataburger and Sonic too. So don’t go by me. But, I think any one of the three are head and shoulders above 90% of the other fast food burger places.

by azjazzman on Feb 4, 2009 5:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Keep in mind

They don’t have Whataburger in SoCal (where In N Out built it’s rep). Not sure if they have Sonic or not. In SoCal, it is In N Out or Fatburger.

by azjazzman on Feb 4, 2009 5:45 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

We have Sonic out here too..

..but In n Out is WAYYYYYY better. Order a “Double Double” animal style with grilled onions!! Also, try an order of fries animal style(Not on the menu; you must ask!) Like Tony the Tiger says, : They’re GRRRREAT

Hmmm

Fresh veggies and fresh cut fries instead of Whataburgers frozen jobs. Or even worse Sonics potato flake fries. I mean, you may frequent some of the best Sonics and Whataburgers in the country — but the ones I have visited don’t hold a candle to In N Out — and this is coming from someone who eats a burger at least 4 days a week.

by StevenABQ on Feb 4, 2009 5:50 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'll take your word for it

But, I just meant the burgers. I really don’t care much for the fries at any of the three places. If I am desperate for fast food fries…it’s Wendys for me.

by azjazzman on Feb 4, 2009 5:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well

I think In N Out fries are like the Yankees (you either love them or…) but, I enjoy that they are freshly cut and not frozen. Alot of people try to compare In N Out burgers to something they might have at a restaurant — you know like a gourmet burger. But that is an unfair comparison, I would say In N out is like Old school fast food…without the synthetic conglomerate taste of the BIG chains.

Sure miss mighty whighty's

Sure miss White Castles @ two in the morning living out here in AZ

Unfortunately

the White Castle restaurant that used to be in Scottsdale closed. I’m no expert, mind you, but I have heard that this place http://www.chicagohamburger.com/ is a reasonable alternative.

There are several good restaurants at the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall.

I like Z Tejas and the Kona Grill.

Don & Charlie’s has been mentioned elsewhere and that’s good too. So is the Fox Sports Grill.

Looks like Dirty Dogg Saloon

may be it. We’ve been doing dive bars the first night we’re there for the guys-only trip. My bud who lives out there now has his recommendation for this years’ trip and DD-Saloon appears to be it.

I was wondering when that would happen.

Good for Phoenix and the D’backs.

Looks like the D'backs could use any financial boost they can

based on this article in USA Today a couple days ago.

Apparently the team is on the hook to Bernard Gilkey for $500,000 in each of the next 25 years.

DON'T drink and drive in Maricopa County!!!

I’ve heard a DUI gets you 10 days in tent city! The Sheriff of Maricopa County doesn’t mess around!

Sheriff Joe!

He’s my modern-day real-life Harry Callahan; though I’m not sure if he has a .44 magnum.

It's true

actually first offenders 24 hours . Lets see what Charles Barkley gets . He was arrested last month during a DUI task force set up in Scottsdale . He was drinking with Steve Ercle . Be careful drinking and driving , Also Glenn Cambell did some time too . He gave a free concert to inmates to avoid the tents .
