How 'bout bringing on Manny

I'm a big Red Sox fan,but the Cubs are my favorite National. You will not get flac from me.....My wonder is there any activity on concerns for Ramirez....You guys could certainly use the bat.I think Manny has learned a lesson. He wants 600 HR'S and beyond. That will take him 2 years or more to accomplish.....I think he realizes he has only a few years left.....I'd love to see the Cubs win it (WS).....God Bless the Cubs!!

And just where is he going to play?

The roster is full. Manny’s best place would be San Francisco.

Ah, but we still have to PAY them, whether they produce or not.

If you could (poof) make their contracts disappear, then we could have a serious discussion.

Well, thanks for that...

Realistically though, he doesn’t really fit where the club is trying to move the team. And frankly, I personally think he’d do well to head back to the AL. If he could DH at least half the time, he’d probably stay productive for at least another three years.

He's a tremendous hitter and I believe

many fans of the Cubs would have begged for him if Soriano wasn’t making a mint in LF.

The acquisition of Bradley was a budget driven add. They were looking for max production at bargain cost and he fit the bill.

Manny will help whatever team he signs with provided they get the guy that played for the Dodgers last year. The guy that suited up for the Red Sox wasn’t as great.

If the Cubs did sign him

either we would have the most unhappy OF in MLB with either Soriano, Bradley or Manny on the bench each game (but what a bat off the bench), or the worst defensive OF with the three of them starting together.

You keep ignoring the fact that we don't have room for him...

We’re financially invested in three OF already, and we’re paying a fourth OF $3+ million to fill in when necessary and/or platoon with Fukudome. There isn’t a spot on the field for both Soriano and Ramirez, so why even discuss it?

If we didn’t have Soriano, I’d love to have Manny’s bat for a year or two. I’d rather have Manny than Soriano in terms of production. But we have Soriano, and he’s not going anywhere, so there’s really no place to put Manny. It’s simply not a possibility.

I’m unclear as to this. We were the #2 offense in baseball in RS, #1 in run differential, and top #3 in nearly every offensive statistical category. Our team has changed, surely, and we always have needed a LH hitter (and every team could “need” a first ballot HOFer) but I am unclear as to what evidence there is that we “need” this player.

Can anyone imagine

the relationship between the bleacher bums and Manny if he came here? Just that in itself would be fun to watch. They would both love each other. Manny would have so much fun that I dont think he would think twice about playing hard for those fans. But we dont have any room on the roster. The only thing we could realistically do is move Soriano to CF or 2B, which i dont want to see. And i definatly dont want Soriano traded.

Now we all KNOW this will NEVER happen

But just for the sake of winter convo, i would love it, IF we could shed Soriano’s contract. Although I am totally sure it was all talk and no substance, but when there were whispers about the club trading soriano for michael young when he was demanding a trade, I was all for it and our team would honestly be amazing if we had him at short and manny in the outfield. Oh well, we will have to do with Soriano destroying terrible pitchers fastballs and striking out on the rest.

Well...

… let me refute those points, sort of:

1. That could be fixed. I’m guessing Manny’s a bit better than Joey Gathright.
2. Didn’t stop him from winning in Cleveland
3. Manny can still play LF. Sort of.
4. Didn’t stop him from winning in Boston
5. Do we care?
6. Didn’t stop him from winning in Los Angeles
7. Lou would probably laugh at Manny’s antics
8. Didn’t stop him from winning in Cleveland, Boston or Los Angeles
9. So?
10. So?

by Al Yellon on Feb 10, 2009 8:27 AM CST up reply actions

OK...

Can he play CF? Because that’s only where to go with him knowing LF and RF are taken. Of course, that figures into #5 if he can’t play CF.

He won precisely nothing in Cleveland and LA. And in Boston, I forgot there were no other players on that team. Yeah he helped but he wasn’t the cog in the middle, Ortiz was.

Don’t bet Lou would laugh. Yeah, that’s what you’d see on the Ch-7 news at 5 with Mark Giangreco. Behind the scene, I’d put an even-odds bet Lou would want to take a tire iron to his antics.

You and I both know you’d be in the [rather large] group of folks all over him if he turned Wrigley into his own sounding board. If you were PO’d at Sammy and his boom box, you’d be really PO’d at Manny being Manny.

Oh, and something I left off my original list is the dynamic between him and Bradley. I won’t come right out and ass-u-me that the relationship between those 2 would be all nice and lovely.

Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.

I was joking, mostly.

The only way the Cubs could fit Manny in is if they traded Soriano. Which isn’t happening.

OK...

but it would be interesting to see – at least for me – how Lou handles things and what kind of unrest there would be at the friendly confines.

For me though and you’re 100% right this won’t happen, I would take Manny and his issues over Soriano and his issues.

Short CF

We can play a 4 man OF and always have a shift in the infield. That solves where to play him.

I would like to see Ramirez....

1. He’s a winner.
2. He’d thrive under pressure in the playoffs.
3. As for how to fit him into the lineup – well, I think Piniella would love to have that problem.

by shemp on Feb 10, 2009 8:47 AM CST reply actions

Lou would love it talent wise

but the Tribune and Future ownership (assuming Ricketts) would flip I am sure when you look at the salary

Manny $20M+ each season for ? seasons
Soriano $106M over 6 seasons
Bradley $30M over 3 seaons
Fukudome $48M over 4 seasons

and that is just the OF, not including anyone elses contract.

by Cubbie-Tim on Feb 10, 2009 8:57 AM CST up reply actions

When all is said and done, he'll probably end up back in LA

I understand the reasons laid out for him to go up to SF, but I just don’t see it happening. If the Giants aren’tt going to meet his 4 yrs $100M price, then I don’t see him taking a lesser deal from them. Assuming LA keeps that 1 year $25M offer close to the table, that’s what he’ll probably take.

But let’s not forget that adage – that’s just Manny being Manny… It would not surprise me at all if he did something really off the wall in terms of a one year deal. Something like going back to…

…Cleveland.

He could put up some fantastic numbers, lead the Indians to the Promised Land, and put himself in prime position to get a 2-3 yr deal next year. After the Indians beat the Yankees in the ALCS this year, I’m sure The Jr. Boss would take notice and make room for Manny to come home in 2010.

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Feb 10, 2009 9:28 AM CST reply actions

It sounded to me...

… the last time I heard about that LA offer, that they had withdrawn it, that they were sick of dealing with Manny.

At this point he might have to take a one-year deal from anyone who offers it. It’s not going to be close to $25m a year.

The Giants still make the most sense for him.

by Cubbie-Tim on Feb 10, 2009 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

that's why I'm thinking Manny does the one year deal, somewhere, anywhere

That way the Yankees have this year to move players, free up $, etc. and then they can sign him in 2010.

For a one year deal this year, Manny’d probably get the most $ from LA. But if money isn’t a factor (remember – Manny being Manny covers a lot of ground), I can see him going (or Boras steering him) to an AL team so he can
1) put up bigger numbers by DHing some of the time
2) play the Yankees and show them what they’re missing

Obviously, AL East would bring #2 into play more. Boston would be the best fit had he not burned those bridges. Baltimore’s a slim possibility as Angelos is unpredictable enough to do something like this, though MacPhail would probably have a sh*t fit. TB’s not a fit. Toronto? Maybe…

If nothing in the AL East works, then that’s why I think Cleveland could be the darkhorse. Sorry Ben Francisco, but Manny’s just a little bit better than you. Manny’s played there before, and the parting was mostly amicable – certainly not like when Thome left.

Um, Jack, for starters...

…it’s been exactly 100 years. It won’t be 101 until and unless the Cubs fail to win it all in ‘09. Second, as good as Manny is, I don’t think he guarantees anything. I don’t recall the Dodgers hoisting a World Series trophy last fall. And Manny standing in left field wouldn’t have prevented Ryan Dempster from struggling to throw strikes in Game One of the NLDS nor would it have prevented the infield defensive gaffes that all but sealed our doom in Game Two. But, again, we appreciate your well wishes.
