Henry Blanco takes Ted Lilly Yard

Remind me why we're watching Paul Bako and Koyie Hill battle it out for our backup catcher position.

Blanco had a great game.  In all honesty, I have a lot of respect for Hendry and I have high hopes for this season but damned if this doesn't cause some consternation.

In the third inning on Wednesday, catcher Henry Blanco launched an 0-1 pitch from USA starter Ted Lilly into the left-field stands for a solo home run that put Venezuela on the board

This is like the Marmol thread, take two

I guess it’s a reflection of having meaningful games in March with teams’ fortunes resting on just a few chances to perform.

But I’m glad Hendry isn’t making decisions one 1-game sample sizes (even with the Cubs’ backup catcher, who won’t actually play much anyway).

DeRosa, Blanco, etc, etc, etc....

I have a feeling this season is going to be filled with fanposts every time a FORMER Cub has a good game. Ugh. Move on.

Agreed.

Why is Henry Blanco no longer a Cub? Because he hits right-handed. Next question?

Sign Blanco! Cut Lilly!

You know what makes a successful WBC for Lilly? He finishes it with his arm still attached.

maybe we need a fanshot “X Cubs Thru MLB” and each day it can have links posted to what each former Cub is doing.

First...

…don’t read the post – or ignore if it you do. Since I was looking for some info regarding Lilly’s start last night, I’m appreciative that this was posted. Frankly, etiquette regarding fanposts, fanshots, comments etc. is nebulous at best. Maybe this should have been a fanshot, not a fanpost – doesn’t really matter. Moreover, how about etiquette detailing how not to be a jackass and allow people to make innocent and (to some) pertinent comments. Lastly, as I peruse recent fanposts and fanshots, I see that ubiquitous throughout are topics about Milton Bradley. And they’re not all, “Milton Bradley fits great into this lineup” or “It’s going to be interesting watching Milton Bradley and Lou eat eachother’s faces this season.” Instead, many of the topics and even more of the comments consider the, wait for it, SIGNING of Milton Bradley – and Hendry’s logic behind it. I for one believe, if Hendry’s decision to sign Bradley is fair game (or at least “acceptable” enough to the hard-ons on this blog), then so should his decisions to not sign or to trade others. I know, I know, I know: these issues have been covered ad naseum over the past several weeks. But now we have baseball; now we have Spring Traning. And with it comes substantive news – like DeRosa looks pretty damn good still (maybe we didn’t trade him at his peak?), or our backup catchers have looked pretty damn pathetic at the plate this spring (insert this fanpost about Blanco), or Marmol this, or Marmol that. Considering how early in the spring this is, and how amazing the team was (in the regular season) last year, why not make comparisons? Why not continue to guage the percieved failure or success of our GM’s moves (and non-moves)? Or how about just not reading the damn post and abstain from making wise-ass comments?

How about we gauge the failure or success of our off-season moves....

….at a reasonable point like, say, the All-Star break? Not in mid-March every time a former Cub does something significant in a meaningless ST or WBC game?

Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

I agree with duboisdm...

…it seems like it’s the same few people who are always bitching about fanposts/shots. If you don’t like what’s posted, don’t read it. We don’t need to read your 2 cents on why you think it’s a bad post.

And carmen_fanzone, how is the WBC meaningless? Who says saying this now isn’t at a reasonable point? The fact that Blanco hit the bomb happened now, no reason to wait until what you think is a reasonable point to post it.

by Cubs and Hawks fan on Mar 12, 2009 9:25 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

I've enjoyed the WBC. I'm attending games this weekend in Miami Gardens.

However, the Florida Marlins may have a difference of opinion, losing Alfredo Amezaga for 4-6 weeks due to a sprained left knee sustained while playing for Mexico in the WBC. Amezaga is the Marlins’ super-utility player much like DeRosa was for the Cubs.

The Marlins aren’t blaming the WBC. ‘’It could happen anywhere, at any time,’’ said Larry Beinfest, the Marlins’ president of baseball operations.

LOL....

I guess a better question is “What does the WBC have to do with the 2009 Chicago Cubs’ season?”. And that answer would be “not a damn thing.”

Reasonable point to evaluate Hendry’s decisions? Um, okay. Say Hank White hits .079 by the All Star break and Koyie Hill hits .333. You could (better) evaluate it then. They end the season with Hank hitting .190 and Hill .290. Would it be fair to THEN evaluate the decision by Hendry to get rid of White and save salary instead of freakin MARCH? I mean, really. You’re seriously saying you can evaluate the decision based on ONE GAME? Why not evaluate it a few days ago when Hill had a couple hits in a ST game and Blanco was hitless?

I never said “reasonable point to post it”. I said “reasonable point to evaluate Hendry’s decisions”. You should work on reading the entire post before you go off on someone, bro.

Who's "evaluating" the decision of Hendry giving up Blanco?

I merely made a point that Blanco hit a bomb off of Lilly. I’m not evaluating anything at all.

Don’t call me bro, you don’t know me. I’m not your drinking buddy.

So perhaps maybe YOU should make sure you understand what’s being said before you respond.

This is what my comment was concerning. It’s at the end duboisdm’s rant. I even used the reply button correctly!

Hey, it’s cool. You made a mistake by not following the thread correctly. It happens. No need to apologize. Really.

by carmen_fanzone on Mar 12, 2009 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok Frank, don't worry about me apologizing, because I've got nothing to apologize for.

And another thing Frank, if you want to keep going back and forth about this, I’m game. But the fact that you’re bitching, AGAIN, on what someone said on a fanpost is getting pretty old.

Bottom line , if you don’t like what is said, don’t respond. You don’t have to read it. And you certainly don’t have to bag on other peoples responses disrespectfully. I’m sure there are a lot of people on here that don’t really give a shit about what you have to say.

by Cubs and Hawks fan on Mar 12, 2009 12:30 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

How'd you know my real name is Frank?

You’re really not going to apologize for being wrong? You don’t see how your potshot at me was, in fact, in error? Takes a real man to admit he’s wrong, bro.

To clarify, I wouldn’t call a difference of opinion on what someone posted “bitching”. That’s the beauty of starting a thread. People are going to agree with you and people are going to disagree. It’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Because that, my friend, would be boring.

Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

It's not necessarily your opinion Frank

it’s that you act like the BCB police when someone posts something under fanpost and it should be fanshot or vice versa. When someone does that, and you want to criticize it, perhaps first look at their profile. They may not have been a BCBer long (duboisdm) and may not have known the difference. Not everyone has been blessed with the BCB intelligence you have Frank. Just sayin….

You take care my man….I look forward to see your criticism posts in the future

Gotta love...

…the self-proclaimed arbiters of relevant baseball discussion and comparisons.

I think the point is, some people (the initial poster) remain quizzical regarding Hendry’s off-season moves. Others (myself and maybe more, who knows, but how much is enough for it to be ok with you to discuss?), share such incredulity and cannot yet see past several of the departing Cubs’ obvious value, especially compared to what we have now.

If this bores you, go away. Remember, while you are no doubt a seasoned poster, who demands only the highest quality of fanposts and topics (of course, quality is apparently something only you have the right to determine), others of us, myself for sure, are relatively new to the board, and/or don’t have time to follow every post as fastidiously as you do. So it goes. But the key is that in an open forum, things will be discussed in which some people have no interest. Fine. But most people choose to ignore those topics or pass them by – you however clearly have an ax to grind and it just seems silly you’d get this upset.

Wow...you make a ton of assumptions there, chief.

Upset? Hardly. Self-proclaimed arbiter of relevant discussion and comparison? Um, right. Ax to grind? That made me laugh out loud.

My point……on this open forum……was why evaluate the deals after ONE GOOD GAME? Why not wait until the season actually begins with a bigger sample size? That’s my only point. I’m sorry that you and CubHawksfan got your panties in a bunch because I chose to offer my differing opinion. If my opinion bores you, don’t reply. See, it works both ways.

OK, technically, IMHO, this Fanpost should have been a Fanshot.

That’s not a comment on the validity of the post but rather its structure. All the poster did here was essentially post a link with a couple lines of comments. He didn’t come up with original content of any substantial amount. IT’S NOT A BIG DEAL, but it would be nice if we could all keep working on using the site as efficiently as possible.

That aside, I was checking this WBC game on my phone on the train last night, because I was really curious as to how Lilly was doing, and I laughed out loud when I saw that Hank White had homered. Henry is a smart guy. He’s presumably been behind the plate for a number of Lilly’s starts and, otherwise, he’s sat in the Cubs dugout and watched Ted pitch for two years.

Tip your cap. I wish he was still a Cub – and, laugh if you want, but I wonder whether the Cubs could be at a slight disadvantage when playing the Padres this season.

They'll be at a disadvantage if they're handing cookies like that to Blanco

Just as Zambrano promised to throw Fukudome straight fastballs today, I think Lilly may have given Blanco a pitch to hit.

I could see Blanco providing a decent scouting report, but I don’t think the Padres have the horses to execute the game plan.

by ol Pete on Mar 12, 2009 12:53 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

He may have thrown him a bone.

It was a relatively meaningless game for both teams, so yes, I could see it happening.

No way

There is no way Lilly went to all that trouble to join Team USA and perform on that stage only to help a player on the other team.

Yes, many disinterested fans think those games are relatively meaningless. So do many players. But the players who are playing in them are not among them.

Henry Blanco's not exactly Mike Piazza.

Lilly may well have dared Henry to hit the pitch, and he did. Again, hats off to Hank White. It’s all in good fun.

sure, but whether or not I can field is irrelevant if nothing comes out of the park.

Good fielders don’t provide me with opportunities out on the streets – unless they happened to be named Prince. However good hitters do. Hence, my interest in signing Adam Dunn this past year, glove be damned. And my fond recollections of Hector Villanueva – he was very very good to us ballhawks…
