Agreed.

Hendry’s just trying to cover his bases. But let’s hope German never sees Wrigley.

When it comes to a utility infielder, I’m not sure there’s much point in looking at his bat. (His career OPS is .740, which could be worse, I suppose.) What’s important is his defense – and that looks horrible at 3B. In 611.1 career innings, he shows up as -9.0/-18.2 UZR/UZR 150. What’s worse, he’s played only 36 innings at shortstop.

Surprise, surprise: He’s basically another second baseman – he’s played 927.1 innings at that position and doesn’t particularly good defensively there either.

What the Cubs need is an elite gloveman as the other utility infielder

It doesn’t really matter if that player can hit his way out of a paperbag. Hence why I agree with your endorsement of Juan Uribe. He would have solved a lot of problems.

by BLou on Mar 13, 2009 12:40 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

There's still a chance Uribe will be cut by the Giants

Aurilia, Burriss and Uribe are basically competing for two spots, so unless Burriss is sent to Fresno, I could see Uribe becoming expendable.

Totally agree.

I was on board with Uribe before he was signed. The only problem is – and I apologize for harping on this – if Uribe takes Hoffpauir’s roster spot, it will effectively leave the Cubs without an effective bat off the bench, assuming a 12-man pitching staff.

If Miles is DL'ed

that would allow the Cubs to keep Hoffpauir on the roster, and create room for a Uribe-like signing.

If Miles is healthy, then signing Uribe is a moot point.

Don't give up on Miles

We didn’t give up when Esteban German bombed Pearl Harbor, did we?

Will Ohman

"Who's Bob Brenly? The guy that used to be the manager for Arizona?" ~ Alfonso Guilleard Soriano

by JohnM on Mar 13, 2009 1:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Will Ohman isn't German, although he was born in West Germany...

28 major leaguers have been born in Germany, and 13 others in West Germany, the only Cub of those being Dave Pavlas.

Seven of the 28 were Cubs: Skel Roach, Reggie Richter, Fritz Mollwitz, Marty Krug, Jack Katoll, Ed Eiteljorge, and Heinz Becker, who was on the last Cubs WS team in 1945. (As a German-American during WWII, I can only imagine the taunting he got.)

This is all very interesting, but Esteban German, of course, isn’t German. He’s from the Dominican Republic.

I can't decide whose name is funnier...

…Fritz Mollwitz or Ed Eiteljorge. Say them out loud in a German accent – hours of fun. (OK, minutes.)

I prefer

the Roach man. For a couple different reasons.

I was kidding

Although it’s possible that in German law he is considered a citizen there.

(Oh, and I think everyone knew Esteban isn’t German.)

Nobody’s mentioned Germany Schaeffer?

Oddly enough...

A little insurance at 2B

Why not add Ryne Sandberg to the 40-man, just as a precaution? He can still keep the Tennessee gig, but hey, you can never have enough second baseman, you know?
