Roster Cuts And Signings
The Cubs today sent five more players back to minor league camp: Richie Robnett, who was optioned to Iowa, and Brian Schlitter, J. R. Mathes, Matt Smith and Steve Clevenger. None of them were expected to make the major league team this year. Signed today to a minor league deal with an invite to major league camp was Esteban German, former Royals infielder, probably to give some infield depth. I'd expect him to also wind up at Iowa this year.

German
Can’t see anything wrong with that signing. I always liked him on the royals, although he seems possibly a little ‘Macias-y’ to me. Still, if we had a manager worth a damn, having Macias on the team probably wouldn’t have been the worst thing. German will probably just be good insurance to have in case something happens to Miles, Fontenot, or, god forbid, our corner infielders… or if they just decide they need more versatility on the team.

Agreed.
As a 25th guy on the roster, German probably isn’t a bad player. The brass clearly isn’t impressed with Luis Rivas, who is basically the same player.

hmmmm
he’s a better (or at least more useful) player given his experience in the outfield. I’ve yet to even acknowledge that Rivas is on the team, much less an option to break camp.

Interesting.
I hadn’t noticed German’s outfield experience before you mentioned it.
He does hit righthanded, which might put him down a notch in Lou’s book.

Schlitter
There are times when you wonder how a name would have sounded on air if Harry was still around …
Ya gotta love a team with a shortstop named TheRiot ...
As a product from my highschool
I hope Schlitter eventually makes it to the majors

As far as I know, yes.

I don't think he's major league ready yet.
Probably ticketed for Daytona or Tennessee.
