They Still Play Spring Baseball In Tucson: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks, Sunday 3/15, 3:05 CT

For the time being they still do, anyway. With the White Sox having decamped to Glendale, the D'backs and Rockies hold down the Tucson spring fort, and today the Cubs make one of the two trips they'll make down I-10 (the other is Saturday, March 28 vs. the Rockies) this year.

Bruce Miles says Kevin Gregg wants to close, and adds yet another clue about how
Lou Piniella's pre-ninth inning bullpen may set up:

[Aaron] Heilman has been in the mix for the fifth starter's spot, but with Sean Marshall apparently in the lead, Heilman may pitch the seventh.

"What we're looking for more than anything else is what we do in the seventh inning," said Piniella, who offered a possible hint by saying that he liked the way Heilman works out of the stretch. "How we set up our bullpen in the seventh inning will dictate a lot what happens everywhere else. Heilman's had experience in that department. He's done a good job there. I have a pretty good idea what we're going to do. Let's just let it play itself out a little bit."

Carlos Marmol says he knows why he wasn't sharp yesterday:

"I get in trouble every time I throw breaking balls in Arizona," Marmol said. "I just have to do better. I can't wait to get out of here."

He can't wait to get out of Arizona? Geez, he just got there. Just remember, Carlos, cool weather in Chicago awaits you. The good news for him and the Cubs is that the first six games of the regular season will be played in domes.

Corey Koskie has passed his physical and is ready to play. I hope he gets some playing time as soon as today. He could be a Jim Edmonds-type find if he can hit even close to what he did with the Brewers and Twins.

Today's game is available via KTAR, the D'backs flagship radio station, at the MLB.com Mediacenter. Rich Harden will face Brandon Webb; among Cubs regulars making the trip to Tucson will be the Cajun Connection, Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot.

MLB.com Gameday for the Cubs-Diamondbacks game

There are also three WBC games today; the one between the USA and the Netherlands is now an elimination game, after the USA's shocking, mercy-rule, 11-1 loss to Puerto Rico last night.

MLB.com Gameday for Japan/Cuba (3 pm CDT, ESPN2)

MLB.com Gameday for Netherlands/USA (6:30 pm CDT, ESPN2, elimination game: loser goes home)

MLB.com Gameday for Mexico/Korea (10 pm CDT, ESPN2)

Didn't see the game

but I keep reading that Dero’s lack of range really cost the US team.

It was 11-1....a mercy rule game

DeRosa not getting to a ball or two did not lose the game

Really

Dero can’t get to a couple of balls and is the reason they gave up 11. How about Peavy getting hit around like a Class A pitcher.

It's been said before and I will say it again

Opening Day cannot get here soon enough.

This has been the most drawn out spring training in recent memory.

Did a Wrigley Field walkabout yesterday - here's some low-res pics so shouldn't clog thread up

Looks like outfield is being re-sodded. No cause for alarm though – sod is just like a jacket; easily taken off and put on. The underlying structure (drainage system) is still sound.

here’s the new outdoor “beer garden”. Looks like it will be much larger than the old patio space.

and finally, the SportsCorner corner is still looking mighty empty. All they’ve got done is a wide open base (no piles or beams at all) and the beginnings of a back wall (the scaffolding against the next building). Don’t see how they’re going to be ready by Opening Day

From Wrigley Field 3/14/09

Click on the above link to see more pictures (11 total) from different angles, especially the new beer garden.

Thanks for the pix.

I was actually near there yesterday, without my camera. Glad you took the field picture, I agree, the sod is easy to replace.

Last I heard the patio should be ready for Opening Day (still four weeks), but Sports Corner’s ETA is now July.

What more do the need ?

An empty lot and some beer would constitute a “beer garden” for most of the people that go to those places. Ok maybe a weed or two for decoration.

Was at Mesa game yesterday

Gregg looked great and Marmol looked awful. If Carlos is blaming Arizona for his terrible breaking balls, he is just kidding himself. Nobody else had problems (Gregg broke off some beauties) and Marmol’s mechanics were all messed up.

Beautiful day, had great seats and all in all, had a terrific time. For those who were wondering, the place that used to be Sluggo’s (now Diamond’s) still has a limo shuttle to HoHokam. The crazy Cubs fans on the shuttle to the game are almost as much fun as the game itself. One young woman was showing us the autograph she got from Ronnie Woo Woo (?!?!) on her left breast.

if you had seen a crystal ball 20 years ago and seen the Cubs and Wrigley today what would have been the biggest surprise?

He shouldn't

He shouldn’t. There is absolutely no way he plays over Lee and if Lee is traded they should only do it to replace him with a younger 1st baseman who either is a proven major leaguer or even a top prospect.

Why is this all this anti Lee sentiment? only a complete dislike of Lee would bring anyone to want a 29 year old rookie to replace him.

His chances of making the team keep going up. Particularly with Guzman pitching well and Marshall likely to win the 5th starter spot.
