MLB Hot Dogs

I am looking for a list with ingredients of all the different hot dogs served at each stadium. My friend and I started a tradition where we choose one hot dog each year and have that dog on opening day. All we do is eat hot dogs, drink beer (old style of course) and enjoy one of the best days of the year. The only bad thing about the day is my friend is a Cardinals fan. So far we both agree that the Wrigley dog is the best. Any help is much appreciated.

I wish....

Wrigley would go the way of the Sox and get Vienna Beef dogs instead of Ballpark. Or hell, bring back the Hebrew Nationals!

I'm pretty sure not all the stands have Ball Park

At least the ridiculously priced “Chicago Style Hot Dogs” stands dont have Ball Park

Just get Vienna Beef

Chicagoans take it for granted but when you leave Illinois and can’t get a Vienna Hotdog or Italian Beef you’ll understand.

those italian beefs

Can't get them anywhere else

When I go to Chicago for a week I prob. have 5 sandwiches. Michaels in Highland Park is my favorite place but really I can go anywhere.

I can

But it’s not the same as having it there. I’ve done all the Chicago foods shipped. It’s just better made fresh.

there is a vienna beef

You misread

UIllinois won’t help me since I live in NY. You can’t get a good hotdog, pizza, pancake, no one knows italian beef, just to name a few…

Hey dont complain about NY pizza

Its not Chicago pizza but still decent. Now Philadelphia pizza is something to complain about. its like if NY pizza and a cheap frozen pizza had a baby you would get Philadelphia pizza! DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!

Actually NY pizza is bad

They use tasteless cheese and sauce. When you get out of the city and go to the suburbs its crap and I’ll stand by that statement forever.

Portillios

Portillos is the best. My cousin moved to England 3 years ago and when she comes home she cannot be in the US for more than an hour before having a Portillo’s.

Luckily there’s one relatively close to O’Hare in Park Ridge by Lutheran General Hospital. I had a suck my brain to the bone dry horrible job over there in the mid 90s Portillos being across the street was the only redeeming quality.

That Portillo's is awesome

Whenever I’ve had a layover in Chicago that’s at least 90 minutes, I get my brother to pick me up at the airport and drive me to that Portillos.

they put a Portillo’s in SoCal. It’s a bit (OK, a lot) out of the way from my LAX office, but soooo worth it.

I finally found a place in Austin

after years of looking that has an Italian beef, and another place with a good Gyro…now for a vienna hot dog, I still have to go to a deli and order them by the pound, and i get about 6 for $4 there

I have some Hebrew Nationals in the waiting for opening day

Couldn’t care less about what’s served at Wrigley, but it’s the best hot dog I know of. Despite that, if I did want to change it up, we have a place here called Wakadog that uses the Vienna Beef hot dogs, and mmmmmm, they are delicious.

I think I just talked myself into what I’m having for lunch today.

I think the best dogs are

in Wrigley right next to the front entrance. You can get a footlong with a wide variety of toppings. I prefer to make it chicago style.

As far as different ball parks go, while I’ve never been to Arizona I have made the hot dogs their park are known for. A beef frank (which i got from Paulina Market, fantastic) topped with nacho cheese, ground chorizo, and crushed tortilla chips. Different but delicious

i found this site that has some reciepes

it has a few dog styles like a rocky dog and the type popular at turner field. found this cool the AAA afiliate of the Rangers in OK City has a concession stand that serves different varieties of dogs from all around the country; Dodger Dogs, Cincinnati Cheese Coney, Chicago Style.
Back to hot dog brands i have had Hebrew National and they are awesome but I grew up with Vienna Beef and I have to stay with them, now i hungry for hot dogs

by truthaddict11 on Mar 20, 2009 11:11 AM CDT reply actions

An update for Wrigley this year,

(To repeat)
Kosher dogs have been removed from Wrigley. No Bests, no Hebrew National.

They will be replaced by the “Ultimate Stadium” dog. I don’t know anything about these.

After the removal of the Jumbo’s last year, you can now get a Ballpark dog or an Ultimate Stadium dog. I don’t know why they had 3 different hot dogs being vended, and I don’t really know why they now have 2. There’s something very gross about a “cheaper” hotdog.

Also, as with all other concession items, prices this year have gone up $0.25

Come visit me inside Wrigley along the Addison side mezzanine fence straight up from 1st base.

no more koshers?!

that’s sad.

granted, my tradition before a game is generally a beer and a polish at murphys before heading in, so it doesn’t bother me too much.

Especially since the "cheaper" dog was only 25 cents cheaper.

“Ultimate Stadium” dog… somehow that sounds like a marketing exec coined that to cover the fact that it isn’t very good.

Chicago on a Bun,

located in the University City area of San Diego, has authentic Chicago hot dogs and Italian beef sandwiches. It’s owned by a former Chicagoan.

by Clark Addison on Mar 20, 2009 6:17 PM CDT reply actions

And,

“Sluggers” in the East Village on Park and Market, a few blocks from Petco. “Chicago On A Bun” is good, but very overpriced. “Lefty’s Chicago Pizza” (and hot dogs) on 30th Street in North Park is said to be very good. I haven’t been there yet, however.

There are 2 Portillo’s in SoCal — one is in Buena Park, near Knott’s Berry Farm. The other is in Moreno Valley, just south of the 60 Freeway. Portillo’s expansion plans in SoCal have stopped because of the economy’s troubles. I believe the original goal was to open 20+ units in L-A, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernadino Counties.

isnt that the place

where the customary order goes something like “gimme a f’ing hotdog you stupid bi***”?

by bheidge on Mar 20, 2009 7:51 PM CDT up reply actions

It can be

but I’ve never ’participated like that. They do have awesome dogs and the best fries in town.

Don’t know whether they have closed down or not.

by cubsgirl2 on Mar 22, 2009 11:21 AM CDT up reply actions

they were

closed by the board of health but I believe have since reopened. The way the standard order goes depends on the time of day you go. Its pretty family friendly during the day but can be x rated after the bars let out. I find it helpful to compliment them while insulting (Give me a dog you beautiful slut! With fries you sexy skank!)

by JJDiesel21 on Mar 22, 2009 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

Not surprised

that they were closed. That’s 1 dirty place. The dogs & fries are good so I have always overlooked the dirt.

I have never ordered like that. Just not into it. The nice thing is that they let the customer take the lead. You can ‘participate’ or not. Your choice.

When I have taken my kids with me they were always very nice to them, even looked out for them.

by cubsgirl2 on Mar 22, 2009 5:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Forget that it's dirty.

I believe one of the main reasons they were shut down is they had no running hot water. Read that again, NO RUNNING HOT WATER. You know those laws about employees washing their hands and what not? I don’t think cold water does the trick. There was also something about them keeping onions at the wrong temperature, and rumors of rats, but I think those were unfounded.

Regardless, it’s one of my must-stops whenever I’m in the area, my parents got me hooked. The fries are simply unreal and the dogs and burgers are pretty damn good as well. Someone above mentioned Michael’s in HP, tough to beat if you’re in the suburbs. Wow, I am SO hungry right now. This isn’t fair.

they got Dome Dogs, I am assuming from Hormel. Not that great.

I usually buy Nathans and cook them in a frying pan with oil. Add Lawry’s seasoned salt, garlic powder, pepper and cook with a bit of hot sauce. Tops with cheese, peppers and onions. Damn good.

I'm partial to chili dogs, myself.

A good cheese coney is always welcome. I would have to think that there are a few stadia with these on the menu, probably Detroit and Atlanta among them. And if Cincy doesn’t have Skyline Chili dogs available, they’re missing a golden opportunity.

Principal Park here in DSM has a pretty good Chicago dog available on the concourse. Sadly, these are the only good dogs in the park. (If I remember correctly, they use Nathan’s.)

For far more information than you ever needed about hot dogs, there is the site of the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council. Be sure and check out the Trivia page, including this bit:

Legend has it the Babe once ate 12 hot dogs and eight bottles of soda between games of a doubleheader.

Remember Smokie Links?

I found a pretty good version of the Oscar Meyer Smokie Link that they used to serve at Wrigley when I was a kid. It was at the Italian themed stand on the right field side.

Im a big Superdawg fan and I always make that my first stop after I land.

by tedinSoCal on Mar 21, 2009 9:35 AM CDT reply actions

--- absolutely

smokie links were always a big part of the Wrigley experience when I was a kid. I remember the guy pushing a huge grill down the main aisle separating grandstand and box seats.

I haven’t seen them at the park in many years, but someone recently told me they can still be found in the extreme left field corner of the main coucourse. True?

by BatCubFan on Mar 26, 2009 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Al can confirm

but I believe Smokie Links were sold only on the Cubs ‘throwback’ day last year. I think the product had to be produced especially for that day, since Oscar Meyer may have stopped making the sausage years ago.

Another option: DC's Half Smoke

Another option is the almost (but not quite!) hot dog known in D.C. as a ‘Half Smoke’. Described as “similar to a regular hot dog, but slightly larger, spicier and with more coarsely ground meat”, the half smoke can be found at street vendors throughout D.C. and is the local specialty at Nationals Stadium. This was one of my favorites while living in DC- not a Chicago dog, but should definitely make the list to try.

Here’s a great article about the Half Smoke (as made by the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl) being named the official Nats’ dog: http://www.seriouseats.com/2008/04/the-new-nationals-dog-washington-dcs-half-smoke.html

They are still there.

Great place for a dog. We call them slider dogs.

by MissouriKev on Apr 1, 2009 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I personally have a couple requirements for hot dog places

a) Authentic Chicago-style dog (some places screw this up still)
b) A sick hot dog deal (there’s a place somewhere in the city that has two dogs, fries, and a drink for $3.50. In the burbs, I think it’s either Niles or Skokie that has a place on a golf road with a simliar deal for 3.99, but no drink)
c) A good hot dog pun for a name (Wiener Circle, Wiener Take All, Dog Den, Mustard’s Last Stand, etc.), but I’m flexible on that one.
d) I like looking around and questioning if I’ll get heptatis by touching stuff. If not that dirty, at least have some really old headshots of people on the walls.

Best Chicago Style Dog ever had

Ok that’s lie. But you won’t believe what they had in this town in NY where I grew up.

It was a hot dog place and they had a chicago hot dog on it:
-Ketchup
-All pork hot dog
-Sesame Seed Bun
-No Mustard
-No Sport Peppers

It was disgusting looking, I returned it and the guy wouldn’t give a refund saying I didn’t know what a chicago hotdog was. The place closed 2 weeks later, people hated the food there.

Have fun in DC...

Thanks, Cubs North- if you do make it to DC, here’s an update on what to expect at the stadium: http://dcist.com/2009/04/what_to_expect_at_nationals_park_th.php

I was there in the RFK Stadium era, when vendors (with the half-smoke plus chip & drink for ~$3.00) lined the walk from the Metro to the stadium. Not sure what the new environs allow…

For any Cubs fan making the trek to DC, I highly encourage a stop at the local street vendors- especially at the less-touristy Metro stops (e.g., not at the Smithsonian stop- my local stop was at the McPherson West[White House] station, which had the aformentioned cheap combo). Get your half-smoke with mustard and onions for a basic-but-spicy true-DC selection.

And while you’re there, if Congress is in session, stop by your local Representative’s office for free tickets to the House & Senate floor sessions. Skip the long lines at the visitors’ center and go right to the source. Although the action seems about as slow as a Pirates-Nats series, you can get a front-row view of the USA government at work. (And for the strong-stomached, check out the schedule of Congressional Committee hearings during your visit- it’s also free, and you might get to see the real sausage of legislation getting made up close. Ahem- sorry for the pun.)

He was a few rows above me and a group of maybe a hundred other University of Iowa alumni last night, and started right in with the wooing early and loud. Between innings, he was... how shall i say this... creeping around? We all know his reputation.

Within 10 minutes of making a complaint to the Cubs text line, he was gone. Might be worth trying in future instances.
