Oh the bottom of the roster
As the cubs move into the final 13 days of spring training, [a long one at that] what was purported to be an uneventful spring training is again down to those final sub-role positions that consume the smaller side of the 80/20 rule. Just to review
Decided:
- Fontenot has established himself as the 2B starter, possibly not even a platoon player although Lou might just keep his AB's down to 400 as to keep him fresh for the autumn. More on this later.
- Marshall has earned a spot on the rotation, be it the euphomistic 4th or 5th spot, I think Marshall will get most rotation starts through May or early June.
- Heilman is the 7th inning set up with Gregg or Marmol vying for the glamor role. Cotts has made the team
Almost decided:
- Koyie Hill has put himself in position to win the back up catcher role.
- Gaudin has put himself in position to be selected the long reliever/swing role.
To Be Decided:
- Gathright as the 5th OF'er, probably a luxury although if/when Bradley needs non DL time it could put pressure on the Cubs with the three remaining OF'ers who are essentially starters or platoon starters.
- Hoffpauir & Fox. Both players really don't have a position they can defend that they need to do, Hoff needs to be a corner OF'er but can't, Fox needs to be a 3B and OF'er and can't. Both have good bats.
- Samardz's next step, is he on the Cubs as the 6th bullpen pitcher joining Gaudin as a possible swing?
- 10th, 11th and 12th(?) pitcher. Vizcaino, Guzman and Patton all RH'ers are competing for at least one, but possibly two of these spots. I have seen reports from at least three teams beat writers where their respective team's bullpen problems are known and are eyeballing Guzman. Patton is Rule V and making his opportunity fully known.
Needs
- A 4th IF'er who can play all the positions and ideally even stand in the OF. This is not some wish it is critical since Mills can play 2B and LaRussa used him at SS. A super sub could also replace Gathright and allow the Cubs to keep a big stick on the bench like Hoffpauir or Fox. (Actually between those two like Fox because at least he can put on the tools in an emergency and walk out to 1B, 3B and LF in an extra inning game.)
Options
- Looking out at the market players like Loretta, & Uribe could become available although because of the Yankees high profile injury and the Astros Boone surgury demand for them or others like Teahan could increase.
- Macier Izturis would fit most of the infield needs and if the Cubs are willing to gamble Gaudin who is now valuable with Harden's uncertainty believing that Samardz can fulfill the role than that is a grand move.
- Ryan Freel is another player to under the radar that seems to be on the potential edge, at $4M he can play both 3B and the OF, although RH'ed he has speed and would fulfill the role of Gathright and 3B back up. He played 2B 13 games in 2006 and stood there a few times in 2007 and 2008.
This of course is speculation but I think Baltimore would be willing to take Vizcaino and another arm, possibly something in AA where the Cubs and O's basically swap salaries of players who are not going to be used much. For the O's Cubs would have to offer Grant Johnson.
Freel's strength is that he can play all the OF positions, experienced and runs the bases very well. His role on a 13 position player roster would allow the Cubs to cut Gathright and keep Hoffpauir or Fox, where the Cubs would have a HR potential on the bench. Izturis would also fulfill backing up all the infield positions including SS, switch hitter who also is experienced---cheaper in $$ but possibly more expensive in player assets, but would force the Cubs to keep either Gathright (or Taguchi) as a 5th OF'er. Of course this is all speculation but there appears to be surplus on both clubs.
On paper I like Freel as he is more versatile where he can play defense adaquently and still hit pretty well. He was a fan favorite in Cinci for a reason, he hustled. Furthermore a scenerio like this would serve both clubs in dumping $$ but also serving needs. Baltimore's middle relief is very inexperienced and could use an old man who can still throw 95 MPH.

I like Freel as well
He’s got a bit of Lenny Dykstra in him, minus the roids and hedge funds
Okay, just so I understand it... in your wildest fantasy, you are in hell. And you are co-running a bed and breakfast with the devil.
I think the idea of a Freel for Vizcaino swap makes some sense for both teams.
I do get the feeling Hendry is going to make a move before the season starts. Can we dare to hope it will be as successful as the signing of Reed Johnson?

I don't see why it makes sense for Baltimore in terms of talent
If Baltimore simply felt like moving Freel to clear salary, perhaps, although I don’t think they are in such a mode right now. I think they’d be open to moving Freel, but they don’t have a need for a junk pen arm prospect like Grant Johnson or a junk pen arm like Luis Vizcaino. They’d probably rather try their own arms, particularly since they can likely be as effective, if not moreso, than Luis Vizcaino.
okay toons you are correct maybe Caridad or Mateo
but I think Vizcaino could be moved in a salary swap, but looking at the Balt roster Freel is really the odd man out, especially in that he was hurt last year.

Surprised with Koyie Hill
I had originally thought Bako would be a better option than Hill as a backup. Hill had hit even worse than Bako in the big leagues. I thought Bako was better defensively than Hill. Well, Hill has hit a lot better than Bako in the spring. I don’t see much difference any longer in defense between the two. Hill is younger and less expensive than Bako. I was wrong about Hill. He deserves to be with the big club.

not much savings $$$ wise
but I agree he should be the back up

not much, only $350K
Hill has earned his roster spot.

Aren't we paying Hill that money whether or not he makes the roster?
If so, wouldn’t we be saving the entirity of Bako’s payroll?
not really
The MLB minimum in AAA is $60K but in the BIGS it is $400K, you don’t get paid the same unless you are under another contract like Samardz.
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
350K
With penny pinching going on, 350K is a more significant amount of money than it used to be. I don’t think Hill’s salary is a big factor in his bid to make the team. I think his relatively young age compared to Bako’s is more significant.

you are correct KEMOSABE
Actually there are many factors but the bottom line is Hill has to date beat out Bako, $$$ withstanding.
An organization will always cheer the fact that a grinder will emerge in a back up role as the victor in a roster competition. It validates the coaching, it sends messages down the organization for other grinders to keep their heads down and work to make themselves better and find a role to help the big league club.
The other grinders who have made it are Theriot, Fontenot, Soto, Marshall, Marmol, Cotts, and possibly Guzman.
Stars are different animals where Soto has developed himself into one, but Zambrano was always a star so he doesn’t count as a grinder, but the others made themselves into players coming through the system.
This has some economic considerations of course, but Koyie Hill even though he was in other organizations is now an alumni of the Cubs organization.

RE: Izturis... When you say "all the infield positions" are you including 1B in that?
because he has never played a ML game at 1B. You indicated that acquiring Izturis would probably mean having to keep a 5th OF, so is Hoffpauir/Fox the odd man out if Izturis is picked up? If so, who’s the backup 1B?
Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."
no I should rephrase that about Izturis
the problem with Izturis is that he leaves 1B open in that it forces the Cubs to keep the 5th OF’er, that is why a player like Freel fits, it allows the Cubs to bench a 1B (Fox or Hoffpauir) and back up 1B and be the stick on the bench outside of the 4th OF’er not playing.
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
Hmmm...
I dont want to sound like I’m Micah Hoffpauir’s agent, but have you seen him field 1B the last couple games? He can make some pretty big plays. Granted, he’s not a defensive whiz like DLee, still he should be given a shot there.
That may be so
but the bench still only has 5 spots on it to cover 8 positions. Having a player who can only cover one position still puts us in a tough spot (especially with regards to third base). In the past we could afford such a player (like Ward) because of the flexibility afforded us by DeRo and Cedeno. We don’t have that anymore.
thre you go
Bench players need to be able to play multiple positions, why a bench 1B must be able to play a corner OF if left handed.
Now here is the current bench: Miles (supposedly can play 2 IF spots), Hill is a catcher, Johnson or Fududome (3 OF), Gathright (3 OF)
if Hoffpauir only 1B and another OF….that is three OF bench players.
Cubs need another infielder and if Hoffpauir or Fox (my choice for the bat) they must dump an OF’er
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
Gathright sticks in my opinion
Especially because Kosuke STILL isn’t hitting this spring. Take a look at his WBC totals and wince.
But Gathright is already an awful hitter.
Why bench a bad hitter and replace him with another bad hitter? The way I see it, Gathright is fast becoming expendable as the Cubs hurtle toward opening day with little to no depth on the left side of the infield.

Question
Was Gathright signed as a free agent? I though so. I also recall if you sign a free agent you can not cut him until June. Can someone please clairify.
