Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

This guy has some heat. There is a video on the page showing a lot from a recent 23 K performance.

He reminds me of Kerry Wood.

I didn't get the players I wanted in the offseason!! Hopefully I get what I want in the Regular Season---The World Series Trophy!! Go Cubbies!!

Ain't no way

The Cubs are gonna draft this kid. He will be LONG gone by the time the Cubs draft.

Exactly

This has been a topic for months now..this kid wont make it past the first overall pick. Unless we can somehow convince Boras we will pay 20mil for a kid.

I think the Nationals take him

but worst case scenario, either San Diego or Seattle would jump all over it.

A cautionary note would be that, someone did an analysis of his mechanics and thought that there might be Mark Prior type problems down the line. I’ll try to dig that up.

by toonsterwu on Mar 25, 2009 12:02 AM CDT up reply actions

Zero chance

He’ll fall to the Cubs. He’s been the hot talk for awhile now.

by rlpete on Mar 24, 2009 10:43 PM CDT reply actions

I hope you're joking

The Nationals will take him with the #1 pick. Strasburg is not exactly an unknown—everyone last season knew he’d be the first pick in the draft this year and since then he’s only gotten better.

There is zero chance that the Cubs will have a chance to draft Strasburg. Heck, there’s zero chance San Diego will draft him and maybe a 0.00001% chance Seattle will draft him.

He’ll be pitching for the Nationals next season.

I agree

There was a segment on Sportscenter early this last weekend about the kid. IIRC they stated that he could be contributing to a ML team by June.

Absolutely no chance he is drafted by the Cubs.

only problem

with Strasburg pitching this season is that he won’t sign early enough. Boras is his agent.

by Josh Timmers on Mar 25, 2009 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

slurve

i commented on this in the fanpost of this.

there is a yahoo article that talks about him, and it mentions his breaking pitch is a curve with slider speed. which made me sick and reminded me of kerry also, in a bad way.

kerry mentioned that the astros 20K game probably had as much to do with his elbow damage as anything else. i hope for better for this kid, but i suspect the same…

by fajita on Mar 25, 2009 3:54 AM CDT reply actions

Impressive stuff.

But let’s bear in mind he’s doing all this against college hitters. Even the most powerful power pitchers can get a rude awakening when they’re standing on the mound with 40,000 pairs of eyes on them and a major league hitter staring back at them. Of course, seeing as how he’ll be pitching for the Nationals, it’ll probably be more like 15,000 pairs of eyes. (YES! Went a long way for that joke, but I nailed it!)

Even if he is doing this against college hitters

he is doing what nobody else has. He is still becoming the most dominant college pitcher we’ve seen, and he is still only 20. I don’t think anybody here is saying that his stats will carry over into the majors but the kid still has the potential to be an ace for a major league club for many years.

There was Mark Prior

and yes, Prior was that good in college. Well, close to that good—Prior never threw 100 mph.

Clemens as well

pre roids at Texas

Clemens

threw hard at Texas, but he wasn’t exactly a slam-dunk dominating college pitcher, as evidenced by the fact that he was the 19th pick in the 1983 Draft. Tim Belcher went 18 picks earlier that year (Didn’t sign).

by Josh Timmers on Mar 25, 2009 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions

The last "slam dunk can't miss" college pitcher I remember before Prior was Ben McDonald ('89)

Honorable Mention goes to Kris Benson in ’96

too bad you cannot trade draft picks

If there's another pitcher

to look at similar to this guy, it’s left hander Albertin Chapman of Cuba. If anyone saw him pitch in the WBC, you saw what he was capable of. His fastball was around 100 (some say 102) and had a nasty curve. Obviously, the problem is the whole Cuban Government thing, but the kid is for real.

I believe his age is a concern though. Some reports have him at 21, others at 22, and still others at 24.

by jerry morales rules on Mar 25, 2009 11:01 AM CDT reply actions

Which means that he is probably 36

(Didn’t have to go very far for that joke, daver.)
