McCourt Really Fed Up With Ramirez?
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/jon_heyman/03/02/manny.dodgers/index.html?eref=T1&bcnn=yes
I know there was a previous Ramirez thread, but it's fallen down into the abyss. Jon Heyman, normally Boras' mouthpiece, reports that McCourt might be fed up (read done) with all things Manny. While Torre and Colletti plead with him otherwise, McCourt is known around LA for being emotional and well, vindictive. if McCourt's petulance prevails, Ramirez actually just might find himself without a team, since apparently not even the Giants have the resources to spite the Dodgers.
McCourt had a good point in an LA Times article this weekend. He offered Ramirez arbitration and was turned down. Any arb decision can't contain deferred money, so it isn't as if McCourt wasn't prepared to pay him in full. Plus, what McCourt left unspoken was that Boras blew a chance to submit an outrageous arb number that he stood a good chance of winning. While McCourt's an ass, there's still a lot of sentiment here in LA that Ramirez and his agent can just take a hike.

Boras and Manny have the Dodgers over a barrel
It doesn’t help that Frank McCourt and Ned Colletti are very terrible poker players either. The Dodgers can compete for the NL pennant IF they have more offensive firepower. And Manny is precisely the firepower they need. All it is going to take to move on a Manny deal is for Joe Torre to start showing frustration with the Dodger offense. Keep in mind that Torre was a master of psychological warfare with George Steinbrenner and also knows how to play the media to his advantage.
Manny will be with the Dodgers by May 1st. Either that or Colletti will unload the farm system to land a big time bat.

Ramirez and Boars have lost the war
They may still have some battles that they can win, but they are getting half the years and less than half the dollars they were hoping for. The Dodgers, I suspect, will end up spending less on Ramirez than what they originally thought it would take on Nov 1.
I still think that Ramirez will sign with the Dodgers, but, ultimately, the final contract will have been more in the favor of the Dodgers than Ramirez. Now from here on out since the bar has been set so low, Manny may actually be able to raise it and he could claim some sort of victory, but all in all, he has lost.

I agree.
Would Manny help the Dodgers? Sure. Does he have any other offers? No. Nor is he likely to get any (even though I think he’d be a good fit for the Giants, they don’t seem interested).
So how does he have him over a barrel again, BLou? Sounds like LA holds all the cards.

And my garbled point......
…. was that McCourt, rightly or wrongly, despite anything Torre does, might just decide to tell Ramirez and Boras to literally go “F” themselves. McCourt is capable of that.

Disagree 100%
I hate Scott Boras as much as you. But don’t think Boras and Manny aren’t in the position of advantage on this. Manny is going to smoke the Dodgers out. Frank McCourt is a doofus, and so too is Ned Colletti. You watch how happy Joe Torre is when two weeks into the season the opposition is pitching around Russell Martin and James Loney, with the Dodgers struggling to put 2 runs on the board per game.

Manny needs to take the $$$ and shut up.
My natural inclination (I try to keep an open mind, but it’s so hard) is always to side against the players in situations like this. Yes, I know this is America, yes, I know that all people have a right to try to maximize their compensation regardless of their profession. Make no mistake, I am a red, white, and blue capitalist. Now, I don’t expect this to happen anytime soon, but Manny and Boras need to open their eyes and take a look around them at our current economic situation. People all around the country, and all around the world for that matter, are hurting badly. Manny already has more money than God, and he still wants more. He has never been one to worry much about PR, but this is a battle we simply cannot win, especially in this market. I would have no part of this on my team. I’d tell him to get his filthy rich ass off my team, period.

Rec'd
Manny’s a great player. However, he is not indispensible. I think many players already have that wake-up call — those like Ivan Rodriguez, who are sitting home, or those like Orlando Cabrera and Bobby Abreu, who took deals for far less than they thought they’d get.
Maybe a message has to be sent. Let Manny play in Japan for a year.

As one who lives in LA,
I can tell you that there is this stupid “Manny factor” that you have to pay him a certain amount or you run the risk that he will be disruptive to your ball club. In other words, just matching him the highest available deal and telling him “take it or leave it” doesn’t fly with this ego-maniac.
Does Manny really think that his childish and threatening attitude will work in this economic climate? I think McCourt should drop his offer by $5/year and tell Manny it drops another $5 million every week. They should also have tough language on behavior and if Manny or the union don’t like it, let him sit out this year. Need we remember how he stomped his way out of Boston last year (after he pushed & choked a Red Sox exec a few weeks earlier)? Does anyone heed a guy like that on their ball club?

He should have gotten the idea
when he said he wanted to be a Yankee to stick it to Boston 27 (?) times a season, and the Yankees showed no interest. The one team willing to spend big $$$ this off season didn’t even give him an interview as far as I can recall.
If that didn’t wake up Boras and Manny, why would the Dodgers not paying him what he is demanding (not asking, but demanding) wake him up?

Here's another reason why Scott Boras is calling Frank McCourt's bluff
Fact is there are teams out there who would gladly subtract a big ticket veteran outfielder if they could find a taker. Great example is the White Sox with Jermaine Dye. Dye has one year left on his deal that pays something like $11 million. Why then hasn’t McCourt and Ned Colletti gotten on the phone with KennY Williams to swing a deal for Dye?!? Sox would love to subtract Dye’s salary and move Carlos Quentin to his natural position in right field a year ahead of schedule. And its’ not like the Dodgers would have to give up a lot to acquire Dye either.
The bottom line is this…the Dodgers NEED Manny Ramirez, period. And Boras and Manny know it.

Frankly, You're Close and You're Way Off
One of the reasons I posted this thread is because of the following-
An acquaintance of mine who lives very nearby to me has been a sportwriter in LA for close to 40 years, He knows everybody and everybody knows him. He is close to many sources in the Dodgher organization, all good. Since this blog is now regularly linked to CNN/SI I’m not naming names because I’m not allowed.
Frank McCourt is thisclose, not “this close” but “thisclose” to telling Boras and Ramirez to take a hike and find another team. He and Colletti have already spoken, and it’s possible we could see someone like Dye in a Dodger uniform before too long. It has come down to ego, a battle of wills, principle, all that, with McCourt. He is TIRED of Boras and Boras’ games. Not everyone in the Dodger organization is happy with this, but McCourt owns the team. This is not to say Ramirez won’t be signed, but right now, as in 12:15 p.m. Pacific time, that’s where things stand. The signing of Hudson was the first step towards that possible outcome. Moreover, McCourt’s remarks about “starting from scratch” are a manifestation of his attitude as well, plus the possibility as a counterproposal he offers LESS, which would be just to flip Boras the finger. We’ll see what happens.

McCourt is still pissed for being repeatedly fleeced in recent years
A washed up Andruw Jones managed to get $37 million over 2 years from the Dodgers. Agent? Scott Boras.
Jason Schmidt who was flashing screaming warning signs that all was not right with his arm in San Francisco in 2006 got $44 million over 3 years from the Dodgers.
Juan Friggin Pierre got $45 million over 5 years from the Dodgers.
—-
McCourt is a brutally bad owner and Ned Colletti the dumbest and lousiest GM in baseball. Colletti lucked into a situation of a clueless owner and a chocked full farm system thanks to the hard work of his predessors Dan Evans and Paul DePodesta.
by BLou on Mar 3, 2009 2:33 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
..and Randy Wolf got nearly $8 million in 2007 from the Dodgers, a season which was a rehab year coming off surgery and where he contributed little
by BLou on Mar 3, 2009 2:34 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
And these are all reasons that McCourt has probably...
… figured it out and said, “Enough”.
Manny Ramirez won’t be a Dodger now unless he and Boras go hat in hand and accept any deal offered. And that’s about as likely as me becoming King of England.

MCCourt better be real careful here
At this point, he’s probably better off just telling Borameriz to take that hike and move on. Otherwise, let’s say he starts from scratch and comes back with a lower offer, say $15-18M for 1 yr. He runs the risk of Boras taking that offer and then Manny sulking and tanking for the whole season.
Most of the time, all this stuff is just blustering and posturing, and eventually a deal is reached and everyone moves on. But Manny has proven in the past that he can turn his on/off switch on and off real easily. If $25M doesn’t make him happy, then $18M and a plate of crow isn’t going to help matters any.

see my point above...
about this idea that you have to pay Manny “above market” so he doesn’t sulk. Do you really think an owner wants to do that with the economy looking worse with every passing day?
My guess is McCourt tells Boras that he will be happy to match any other legitimate deal that Boras can show him…by this Friday (because there are NONE). In the interim, the Dodgers will start looking elsewhere.

I think that's exactly what McCourt is going to do, and he will hold hard & fast to that deadline, if he sets one.
