Split Squad Day: Cubs vs. Indians at Goodyear, Wednesday 3/4, 2:05 CT
Some of the Cubs -- the only one we're clear on is Milton Bradley, who will return as the DH today -- will be in Goodyear to play the Indians, as the Cubs make their first visit to the Tribe's new Goodyear Ballpark. Kerry Wood is not expected to pitch against his former mates today, and Mark DeRosa is off at the World Baseball Classic.
Chad Gaudin gets the start for the Cubs vs. Cleveland's Carl Pavano. The Cubs last faced Pavano when he was a Yankee on June 17, 2005 at Yankee Stadium. They cuffed him around pretty good, but the Yankees hit Carlos Zambrano harder and won 9-6. (That was a pretty awful lineup that day -- how did they score six runs?)
Pat & Ron return on WGN radio for this afternoon's game. Here's the MLB.com Mediacenter link for the rest of today's games, which include several WBC teams playing against other ML squads in Florida (and Australia vs. the Mariners in Peoria, Arizona).
If you don't have access to audio, here's today's MLB.com Gameday link.
I'll post a recap of this game when it's over and then another game thread (or maybe combine them) for the night game (9:05 CST) in Vegas.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

I am anxious to see Bradley back in the lineup and what he will do in 2 or 3 at bats.
I'm anxious to see if he actually bats more than once....

MLB.TV and gameday audio question
I am thinking of getting the mlb.tv subscription this year for the first time and I have two questions for folks regarding mlb media:
1) Does a gameday audio subscription come with the mlb.tv premium (or regular) package, I thought I remembered seeing that.
2) Is the premium worth it, and, more generally, how fast a connection/computer do you need for either to be worthwhile?
thanks!
Eamus Ursuli!
Yes, I believe it does.
But check the MLB.com fine print first.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
I've used the regular subscription to MLB.TV for the last 3 years.
I have a T1 line at work (where I use MLB.TV the most) and a DSL line @ home. I sometimes have “buffering issues” no matter where I use it, but it’s gotten better each year. I’ve made the switch to the premium package this year, but I haven’t seen what it looks like yet and today’s game isn’t listed as a “premium” game (i don’t think ST games will be). Ask me again when the season starts and I can let you know how it’s working out for me.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

I have had MLB.tv regular three years
The first was free through MSN, the last two paid for it. It has improved each year incrementally. I have a friend who said he integrated it with is big screen digital TV with premium and it was good.
I like it because of two features:
A) I can use my laptop and wireless connection and sit anywhere in the homestead and watch the game.
B) I can put in plugs and sit and watch TV with the family and not be sequestered in my office…that said I still like WGN broadcasts
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
The Premium Package - This Year
Has some good new features – You can pause the action and re-start and rewind.
It’s very similiar to the DVP I have from Dish.
Like above if you have a lap top you can watch the game anywhere
I upgrade d to premium for the 1st time. The picture quality is about the same, when I have watched a few ST games this week.

that guy had unreal numbers with bases loaded. From baseball-reference.com
Pat Tabler amassed an incredible record with the bases loaded. He had 43 hits in 88 at bats for a .489 batting average in this situation. Breaking it down another way, Pat came to the plate 109 times with the bases loaded in his career. He had 43 hits, 11 walks, 1 hit by pitch, 9 sacrifice flies and reached on error twice. That amounts to a 60.6% chance that at least one run scored when Pat came to bat.

Am I the only guy who believes this guy is a prospect? I think he can be a major league ballplayer—heck, he’s Mike Fontenot 2.0. Yet the Cubs left him unprotected in the Rule 5 draft and no one took him.
Good to see him triple today. I see him going to Iowa and starting everyday and getting a callup if there’s an injury to Fontenot or Miles.
I haven't given him much thought...

Saw him play in the Arizona Fall League. I concur with you — he’s Mike Fontenot 2.0. He has a future as a utility player, and given that the Cubs need a backup SS, I can’t understand why he didn’t get a camp invite. Isn’t that mostly what the AFL is for, to identify guys like that? Spears had a good AFL season.

If that was my last name...
I would make up my own signature pitch.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Yeah, how could he have missed that opportunity?
He should have at least learned a splitter, so he could throw the Schlitter splitter. Man, these players today just don’t think about marketing.
My sig line is out for jury duty.
reminds me of Mr baseball
the pitchers throwing the “shitter”
"I like coconuts, you can break them open and they smell like ladies lying in the sun" Widespread Panic
How about Schlitter throwing a splitter to the hitter in the shitter?

OK, damnit, this made me laugh.
Although I’d point out it’s NOT COOL to throw a breaking pitch at a guy trying to do his business.

Shit the shitter split the hitters shitter

that's too damn hard to say.

He was a Southern League Postseason All-Star last year
So there is some talent there.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
And he won the "Best Hustler" award
for the Southern League, which sounds dirty but apparently isn’t.
Yeah, but is he scrappy?

Talented and scrappy?
How is he not in big league camp (today aside)?
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
Don't ask me
I don’t understand why he didn’t get taken in the Rule 5 draft.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Spears is much more than a backup. But he could be a good utility guy and I’m not sure why he doesn’t get more love.
Joey Gathright is leaving for a pinch runner?
What is this, Bizarroworld?

Jim A-duece-E?
God help us if he catches Schlitter next inning.
I love to play baseball. I'm a baseball player. I've always been a baseball player. I'm still a baseball player. That's who I am. - Ryne Sandberg
I think his name was Jim Adoozy
Too lame…
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
Here's his lifetime numbers.
He’s got a .698 lifetime OPS in 4 minor league years. Not a prospect.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
Because he's got no power
and OPS skews towards power. But his speed and OBP are good.
He’s only 24. I wouldn’t say he’s not a prospect. I’d say he’s not a good prospect. But I ‘d guess he’s closer to not being a prospect than being a good one.
I took
B-Ball lessons from a Jim Aducci out of Tinley Park when I was in Junior High. I gotta believe that’s his Dad. That’s a riot.

He had a really good year
for Daytona last season. Leadoff left fielder with great OBP skills, good speed (stole 26 bases) and absolutely no power. Canadian.
If you’re old enough, you might rememberhis dad of the same name playing for the Brewers.
When I first heard the name ...
… I wondered why a 49-year-old guy was trying a comeback…

4-4, end of 6th.
FYI, I will post a recap of this game which will also serve as your game thread for tonight’s game.

Did half the coaching staff go to Vegas?
Who did they leave in Mesa? I’d assume Trammel is managing, correct?
Enquiring minds want to know!
Hey, it's a new century!
I think they said that Bobby Dickerson was managing today.
Lou and Alan are enjoying the nightlife in Vegas.

Prediction...
… since there’s a split squad, if this game is tied after 9, they won’t bother with extra innings.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
I think they still go 10, then done
"Every team will win 60 games, every team will lose 60 games, it's what the team does in the other 42 games that decides the season."
Cubs are already on pitcher #4 after six innings.
Depends on how many pitchers they brought over.

Hoff can pitch too

Conversation at a Cubs Game
Me "I think it's cool that a lot of Cubs have names that are abbreviations. A-Ram, D-Ro, D-Lee.... how about R-Ther (R-Tear).

Too bad he can't find the strike zone instead.

I was wondering the same thing.
It is getting close to 5. Maybe people are leaving work.

I'm at my office til the other game starts
without much at all to do. I’s still hoping for some gossip or something.

I think they don't have the minor league campers in the roster files.
so that’s causing the blanks.

Yep, just takin' him out for a test drive.
Hopefully I won’t have to use him too many times in the regular season.
