Split Squad Day: Cubs vs. Indians at Goodyear, Wednesday 3/4, 2:05 CT

Some of the Cubs -- the only one we're clear on is Milton Bradley, who will return as the DH today -- will be in Goodyear to play the Indians, as the Cubs make their first visit to the Tribe's new Goodyear Ballpark. Kerry Wood is not expected to pitch against his former mates today, and Mark DeRosa is off at the World Baseball Classic.

Chad Gaudin gets the start for the Cubs vs. Cleveland's Carl Pavano. The Cubs last faced Pavano when he was a Yankee on June 17, 2005 at Yankee Stadium. They cuffed him around pretty good, but the Yankees hit Carlos Zambrano harder and won 9-6. (That was a pretty awful lineup that day -- how did they score six runs?)

Pat & Ron return on WGN radio for this afternoon's game. Here's the MLB.com Mediacenter link for the rest of today's games, which include several WBC teams playing against other ML squads in Florida (and Australia vs. the Mariners in Peoria, Arizona).

If you don't have access to audio, here's today's MLB.com Gameday link.

I'll post a recap of this game when it's over and then another game thread (or maybe combine them) for the night game (9:05 CST) in Vegas.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

MLB.TV and gameday audio question

I am thinking of getting the mlb.tv subscription this year for the first time and I have two questions for folks regarding mlb media:

1) Does a gameday audio subscription come with the mlb.tv premium (or regular) package, I thought I remembered seeing that.
2) Is the premium worth it, and, more generally, how fast a connection/computer do you need for either to be worthwhile?

thanks!

Eamus Ursuli!

Yes, I believe it does.

But check the MLB.com fine print first.

by Al Yellon on Mar 4, 2009 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

I've used the regular subscription to MLB.TV for the last 3 years.

I have a T1 line at work (where I use MLB.TV the most) and a DSL line @ home. I sometimes have “buffering issues” no matter where I use it, but it’s gotten better each year. I’ve made the switch to the premium package this year, but I haven’t seen what it looks like yet and today’s game isn’t listed as a “premium” game (i don’t think ST games will be). Ask me again when the season starts and I can let you know how it’s working out for me.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Mar 4, 2009 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

I have had MLB.tv regular three years

The first was free through MSN, the last two paid for it. It has improved each year incrementally. I have a friend who said he integrated it with is big screen digital TV with premium and it was good.

I like it because of two features:

A) I can use my laptop and wireless connection and sit anywhere in the homestead and watch the game.
B) I can put in plugs and sit and watch TV with the family and not be sequestered in my office…that said I still like WGN broadcasts

The Premium Package - This Year

Has some good new features – You can pause the action and re-start and rewind.

It’s very similiar to the DVP I have from Dish.

Like above if you have a lap top you can watch the game anywhere

I upgrade d to premium for the 1st time. The picture quality is about the same, when I have watched a few ST games this week.

that guy had unreal numbers with bases loaded. From baseball-reference.com

Pat Tabler amassed an incredible record with the bases loaded. He had 43 hits in 88 at bats for a .489 batting average in this situation. Breaking it down another way, Pat came to the plate 109 times with the bases loaded in his career. He had 43 hits, 11 walks, 1 hit by pitch, 9 sacrifice flies and reached on error twice. That amounts to a 60.6% chance that at least one run scored when Pat came to bat.

Nate Spears

Am I the only guy who believes this guy is a prospect? I think he can be a major league ballplayer—heck, he’s Mike Fontenot 2.0. Yet the Cubs left him unprotected in the Rule 5 draft and no one took him.

Good to see him triple today. I see him going to Iowa and starting everyday and getting a callup if there’s an injury to Fontenot or Miles.

I like Spears.

Saw him play in the Arizona Fall League. I concur with you — he’s Mike Fontenot 2.0. He has a future as a utility player, and given that the Cubs need a backup SS, I can’t understand why he didn’t get a camp invite. Isn’t that mostly what the AFL is for, to identify guys like that? Spears had a good AFL season.
