The Padres' 1984 NL Pennant 25th Anniversary celebration will be against ... the Cubs.

Okay, is it just me ... or does anyone else take offense at the fact that the San Diego padres have scheduled their celebration of the 25th Anniversary of their 1984 National League Pennant the weekend of May 22-24?

That weekend just *HAPPENS* to be during one of two series that the Cubs will be playing in San Diego in 2009.

Please tell me the Cubs aren't going to wear 1984 throwbacks and make me relive the memories I had successfully repressed from that October.

Well..

… clearly, what they are trying to do is get all the SD people who hate Chicago and the Cubs to come out that weekend. From a marketing standpoint, it makes a lot of sense.

I trust the Cubs will have no part of it.

That's all they have going for them. So be it.

It’s also “Turn Ahead the Clock” weekend, as Jake Peavy will be wearing a Cub uniform . . . .

I think they did this for the 20th Anniversary as well

and were upset because the Cubs refused to wear retro 84 uniforms. Well I say if it is a celebration of the 84 pennant they should have a member of the John Birch Society throw out the first pitch for authenticity or sing the anthem or something to commemorate their contribution to the team. Those of you who remember 84 will I presume get the reference.

Exactly.

This was done in Petco’s first year. The Cubs didn’t participate in the ‘festivities.’ The Pads wore the 1984 retros, and the Cubs wore the usual road uniforms. The Cubs beat the Pads that night.

Screw ‘em. It’s the usual crap from the Padres.

Fern bars

Do they still have fern bars? A little Mike Royko reference for the masses.

Honestly who cares?

They won, they can celebrate whenever they want. Hopefully one day we’ll get the opportunity to see a 25th anniversary of a Cubs world series.

More Incentive to Beat Padres

I would love for the Cubs to pound the Padres wearing those hideous brown and yellow uniforms with that disgusting “Cubsbusters” song blaring. Shut those Padres fans up! Destroy that song! We could have Bill Murray saying, “We came, we saw, we kicked its (well, you fill in the rest),” from Ghostbusters. I’m pumped about that series already.

They did beat us

It makes a lot more sense for them to celebrate against us than it does for them to honor those players in a series against the Rockies.

We’ve just got to ignore it and pound the stuffing out of them. And Alan Trammell can be there to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his World Series Championship, which coincidentally, is also this year.

The more I think about this...

the funnier it starts sounding. What other professional sports franchise takes such pleasure in celebrating one victorious playoff series from a year in which they immediately went out and got HAMMERED in the next one?….and lost the WS. I realized it’s more about the “drama” and “comeback” that they like, but if I’m a Padre fan that only leads me to remember getting beat by the Tigers in the WS. That’s like us celebrating beating Atlanta in the NLDS in 2003. FUNNY.

By the way…Padres fans will get IN YOUR FACE about ‘84. It happens at least 3 or 4 times to me every series when I’ve gone to Jack Murphy, Quallcomm, Petco. They won’t even acknowledge the fact they lost to the Tigers that year….beating us was their WS championship…and they seem to like it.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

by santoswoodenlegs on Mar 6, 2009 1:20 PM CST reply actions

I said the exact same thing

I saw this story on homer derby earlier and I got into an argument leaving petco last year after we lost to the padres they were talking all kinds of crap. Like you said they refused to acknowledge the fact that they lost. I even had an elevator full of padres fans taunting me, I was like enjoy losing 100 games and have fun watching us in the playoffs on tbs as short lived as it was.

Someday we'll go all the way.

by Cubbinstrongsince86 on Mar 6, 2009 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

Happens all the time here

When you go to your ‘first’ WS, and all the hype that surrounded the series….it’s never forgotten by those who were here. It’s all they can hang their hat on.

Since Cubs fans are always packing the San Diego park (either one) a Cubs loss there – for that fan base — is as good as a Dodgers loss.

That’s another reason that I wish the Cubs could wind up with Jake Peavy.

Hmmm

Good thought. The Cubs do get very, very strong attendance at Petco, but I like the idea of not applauding. Any ceremonies would be a nice opportunity to be in the bathroom. Five years ago I simply turned down the “Cubs Killers” freebie I was offered at the gate.

Ideally, our starting pitcher that day would be Peavy. :::shrug:::

Garvey was in the "old timer " game at Wrigley in I think 90 or around them ( he was hardly that old). When he came to bat I sang YES SIR THAT’S MY BABY and got some people around me to chime in. I hope he heard us but I doubt it.

Tickets for Cubs@Padres (05/22-24 and 08/17-19) now on sale...

For those of you in Southern California (or who plan to be in San Diego during the Cubs’ visits on May 22-24 or August 17-19 this year), single-game Padres tickets went on-sale this morning.

Petco’s a nice place to see a game, and personally, it doesn’t conjure the same distasteful memories as Jack Murphy/Qualcomm does.

Take offense? Grow up.

They are trying to make money and give their fans something. The Padres don’t owe the Cubs a damn thing and owe Cubs fans even less.

No, I'm sure they don't.

In fact, I think that they did this deliberately to stick it to Cubs fans — they’ve had that attitude for years.

Which is why I think Cubs fans should go to these games in droves and sit in silence as they introduce the ’84 Padres.

The silence will just make it easier for the ticket takers to count your money.

How about not doing ANYTHING about it? Not acknowledging it, not worrying about it, not whining about it, not even mentioning it. If you think of it, immediately think of something happier, like Mint Oreos or porn.

Not contributing to their gate.....

…would be the best action for Cubs fans to take on that weekend. That weekend also happens to be the 3 day Memorial Day weekend. The Padres marketing department has gold with this one! This promotion will definitely bring the Padres fans out, it will be the high point of the year for them. It is a different stadium but it is the same fans. This weekend event is going to elevate the already present Cubs fan harassment that is carried on by some of the Padres fans.

Having attended the 84 series in San Diego and many Cubs/Padres regular season games in S.D. since then I speak from experience as others here do. Maintaining a low profile does not exempt you from harsh treatment.

As nice of a stadium as Petco is to attend a game I just can’t see subjecting myself to the verbal harassment and reliving the 84 experience.

Yeah, I was at that series too.

Never faced as much nastiness as those two (I didn’t make game 3) games. They seemed happier that we lost, than that they won.

Still, if Cubs fans filled their park on those dates, it’d serve them right. I see the point of not giving them Cub fan money those dates. But still.

When you have a team

that could surpass 100 losses and in a part of the country where going to the game is like going to the country club (only LA is more egregious) you have to pull out all the stops.

Other than the opener – which isn’t a given – I’d be willing to bet at least one of those games is the highest attendance of the entire season. That is unless they have a, “we hate LA” night.
