USA advances; who else misses DeRo?
Watching the USA convincingly move into the second round of the WBC last night, I couldn't help but feel bittersweet watching Mark DeRosa come up with a bases loaded triple, and become part of another big rally. Watching him smile with the guys and pump his fist reminded me of why I love the guy so much, and I still can't understand why JH made the move with Cleveland. Not only can the guy play pretty much every position on the diamond, but he is well liked and respected by both his teammates and the fans.
There was a post the other day of the greatest Cub trades. This one certainly will not make that list, let's just hope that it's not one of the all time clunkers.
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

I agree entirely...
…although I really enjoyed watching that game, and while it wasn’t quite like seeing him in an Indians uniform, it sunk in he wouldn’t be wearing blue pinstripes again. For those who listen to podcasts, I highly recommend checking out Waddle & Silvy (sp?) – in particular the last interview they did with DeRosa a few weeks ago (a couple days after the trade). He was just an all-around good dude…
"Writing is exciting and baseball is like writing. You can never tell with either how it will go or what you will do." -- Marianne Moore
Come on...
It’s time to move on people. DeRosa is gone. He is an Indian now.
As for the trade potentially being an all-time clunker? Are you kidding? DeRosa is an aging utility player who had a great season. He had no starting position and was unlikely to repeat his performance. All that good will and good feeling would disappear if he hit .240 this season.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked DeRosa and his attitude, and wish him the best of luck. I understand that he is a good guy. I’m just not heartbroken to see him playing for Cleveland.

I loved dero too but 9 million post about every ex-cub gets old. their gone and 2009 is here—lets focus all of our attention on finally winning it all this year with the current roster.
I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!

It’s always better to get rid of a guy one year too early than one year too late. That mantra may not hold true entirely in this case given the bag of balls the Cubs received in return for DeRosa but what’s done is done. Time to move on. For decades the Cubs organization routinely made a habit of holding onto players past their prime. Not the case here.
Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?
the Cubs front office...
…always claims to try 2 emulate the recent success in Boston, and the Red Sox’s title in 2007 was due in part to Theo Epstien parting ways with A LOT of aging fan-favorites such as Pedro Martinez, Derek Lowe, Trot Nixon, Kevin Millar, Nomar Garciaparra, and especially Johnny Damon. With the possible exception of Lowe, none of those players have even come close to replicating their success in Boston, and that is what JH felt about DeRo. I liked Mark as a player and a person, but if we win the World Series, I could care less who is playing.

That's where we differ...
…I really don’t want to win it with thugs (not that the 2009 Cubs are thugs). I don’t want to see the Cubs spend tons of money on the worst characters that baseball has to offer. I watch baseball because I enjoy it. And I get enjoyment out of seeing the good guys win. Derosa was a good guy and it was fun to root for him. If Cleveland offered Derosa for Bradley straight up, I’d take it. If you put the two guys side by side and tell me which one is least likely to repeat last year’s performance, I’d say it’s Bradley.
"I'm petrified of nipple chafing. Once it starts, it's a vicious circle." Andy Bernard
Even if he doesn't repeat his 2008 performance...
his value is immense. There aren’t many players in the game today that can be thrown all over the diamond as DeRo was. Not only that, but he played every position very well. Part of the post was due to watching him play last night, and he certainly didn’t look uncomfortable at the plate. Perhaps clunker is a bit overstated, but I can assure you that Mark DeRosa will be missed this year.

I was sad to see DeRosa go...
…but he’s gone and and we can’t do anything about it. As for it being one of the worst trades ever — It’s a bit early to jump to that conclusion. For all you know, one of those pitching prospects could turn into a Cy Young Award winner and this trade will go down as one of the best — You never know!

I don't want to go all Worf here...
…but can we all agree not to write Fanposts like this every time DeRo drives in a run or turns a double play? I mean, I love the guy as much as the next blue-blooded Cubs fan (in a manly way, of course) but, to quote Ron Santo, “Geez!”
My sig line is out for jury duty.
Thank you.
As soon as he hit that triple I knew this post was being created. I loved the guy as much as anyone else, but I moved on a long time ago.
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
I'll miss him...
But this year he has a place on my fantasy roster in one of my leagues, so I can follow him that way… :)
Miss him?
I’d want to see how the Cubs do this year with other people playing the positions he played (quite effectively) and then decide if I miss him or not.
If they win and are a better team in his absence, whether it’s because of anyone they got in the trade or not, I suspect my memory – and that of many here – will prove shorter than expected.
Still, it’s hard to think of a more generally useful guy on the diamond…
Like trading three players for Juan Pierre...
… in this case, the value received was less than DeRo was probably worth.
It’s not bad to trade a player at the peak of his value, but at least get value back. I don’t think the Cubs did, unless they can turn some of those minor leaguers into something else later on.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
don't forget
They also got salary relief too, which I think Hendry turned right around and wasted on Aaron Miles. Nonetheless it’s over and nothing we can do about it though most of us didn’t agree with the move.
I dont care who the new owner is as long as he/she/them come equipped with a Jake Peavy and a Joe Beimel!!!
No definite answer to these questions is possible . . .
. . . until this season gets underway. And even then, whatever Mark does, it won’t settle the debates or change opinions.
1) DeRo has a season where he smashes and people will say, “See?! Told you we should have kept him!”
2) DeRo returns somewhat to form in 2009, 2008 looks more like a career year that won’t be repeated, and people say, “See?! Told you it was a good idea to get rid of him!”
And, of course, the people who were wrong will defend their points by saying, "Well, that’s what SHOULD have happened. We got lucky/unlucky. "
What we need is some sort of concrete method of tallying the accuracy of everyone’s opinions on everything. Like a place to put down in E-ink what we think. That way, we could refer back to it when making a guess about current goings-on, in order to add weight to our opinions.
I, certainly, would be like Smooth Jimmy Apollo from the Simpsons.
Jimmy: “Well, when you’re right 51% of the time, it means you’re wrong 49% of the time”
Homer: “Doh!”

Splitting hairs...
but that triple should have been a single, except the CF (Blanco) took a bad route. Sure I miss him, but I think the Cubs will win 95-100 games this year, so I don’t miss him too bradley. Oops, I mean badly.

Maybe we can turn those three prospects
into Ricky Nolasco?
For your information, the Supreme Court has roundly rejected prior restraint.
Oh for the love of all that is good, sweet and pure
Get over it.
Ron Santo got traded. Andre Dawson was let go. We saw Mark Grace win a championship for a team barely out of diapers.
DeRosa is a fine player and yes, I appreciated his willingness to play every position except pitcher and catcher.
But you people act like someone ripped down the ivy.

No, I won't miss the guy
that struck out on a ball low and outside , with the bases loaded, against Arizona in 2007. That killed our best chance in game three. And I won’t miss the guy with th error against the Dodgers that helped open the flood gates. He’s a good player but losing him is NOT going to determine the Cubs fate this year.
When is someone going to start a fanpost...
…where they talk about how much they miss Todd Walker? I have cried myself to sleep almost every night since he left the Cubs.
Its Michael Wuertz for me
I can’t believe they let him – and his nasty slider (at least once in awhile – mostly in Iowa) go!

but he's back....
… if you consider Iowa to be “back”.

…when they traded away Michael Barrett. I mean, for God’s sake, the man had just signed a pizza deal!

DeRosa
“We need you. Hell, I need you. I’m a mess without you. I miss you so damn much. I miss being with you, I miss being near you. I miss your laugh. I miss your scent; I miss your musk. When this all gets sorted out, I think you and me should get an apartment together.”
This reminds me of people’s obsession with Mark “GOD” DeRosa.
He had me at "DeRo"?

He did well here
filled in at up to 6 spots admirably, was a great team player, yadda yadda yadda.
Some folks need to move on.
Overheard in the RF/CF berm at HoHoKam this past weekend: “Gees, I’m really gonna miss #34”. My comment, “Yeah, Sweetness was the greatest. Not only the all time leading rusher in the NFL for years but what a blocker, receiver and even passer. A real class act and a gentleman, may he RIP forever….. Oops, I guess you were talking about Kerry Wood.”
