New Billboard To Debut On Waveland House
It's being installed later this morning. Check out this florid press-release copy:
"Horseshoe is excited to be a part of historic Wrigley Field for the 2009 season," notes Joe Branchik, Vice President of Marketing, Horseshoe Casino, "and are anxious to be a welcomed addition." "The Chicago Cubs have continued to maintain a long-standing commitment to tradition and dedication to the great city of Chicago. Horseshoe strives to do just that, as tradition and dedication to service are a few of our core values as well - it was a natural fit." Horseshoe Casino looks forward to Chicago Cubs fans embracing the new creative addition to the ballpark atmosphere.

Yes.
Don’t forget to “embrace” this. The press release orders you to do so!

Haha.
So, it’s going to look something like this?

Nobody cares about your fantasy baseball team

You embraced it.
You gave them an ad here, and they didn’t even have to pay for it. Marketing genuis!

ummm....
i don’t know that the press release “orders” anybody to do anything… nor do I think this advertisement adds anything creative to the ballpark atmosphere… Where do the ad geniuses come up with this stuff?
But, as a poker player, if it gets more people in the casinos so I can take their money… I’m rather happy with that.

Good point....
but in this economy, I think it’s basically looking for any company that is willing and able to pay up. If those companies are booze and gambling, it pays the bills and pays the free agents.

Wait.
This replaces the red Budweiser ad, which was replaced by the awful drinkability ad? Turns out I shouldn’t have been complaining…
"Pounding sand since 1982...."
From the press release:
tradition and dedication to service are a few of our core values as well – it was a natural fit.
Not to mention promoting irresponsibility and greed. Embrace the values!

Hey now...
gambling has its place. Unless you know of an easier way to teach someone how to count to 21.
To be completely fair...
Wasn’t irresponsibility and greed a key foundation of most of the Wrigley and Tribune ownership of the club?

Interesting
I understand the points made by Goodie and Chanman, but then again the New York teams have advertisements for Mohegan Sun behind the plate.
Didn't know that, shouldn't be allowed either.
The game bashes Pete Rose for gambling on baseball yet they promote it through advertisements at stadiums? It’s like how the cigarette companies post ads saying their product is dangerous and stupid yet they still want you to buy it anyway..
#34: You'll be missed!
None of these places have Sports Books
so there is no conflict of interest, nor hypocrisy nor promotion of gambling on baseball.

The difference is
that the Yankees sold that ad space to the casino, but in this case the building’s owner sold the roof to the casino. The Cubs are not involved. Revenue comes to the Cubs from the rooftops, not the billboards — I believe. (But I’m sure somebody will correct me if I’m wrong.)
Casino ads are all over major MLB parks, especially in California (and Arizona) — where Native American tribes run casinos. And, the casinos buy plenty of TV spots during SoCal Baseball games.
A SD casino was the first choice for naming rights to what is now Petco Park. MLB advised the Padres that step — was a bit much. The casinos can be sponsors, but they can’t plant their name on the structure.

Webcam view of new rooftop ad
It appears they have removed the raised section of the roof where people could watch the game from the attic.
sucks that the attic
has been taken down. i liked that little hole in the wall to see the game.

History of rooftop ads
I remember that WGN had an ad that read “For people who know the score” before the Budweiser ad.
Does anyone remember what was before that?
There is a picture on page 36 of the book "Wrigley FIeld: A Celebration of the Friendly Confines" (photos by Stephen Green, text by Mark Jacob) showing the bleachers under construction in 1937. In the background you can see the "Budweiser" building with an ad for "Ricketts" (any relation to the future owner?).
The "Ricketts" advertised there was a restaurant that was on Clark St. south of Wrigley, long gone.
No relation to the future owner as far as I know.

I wonder how many people....
…. are going to mistake that house for a small casino now?
