Soriano Saves the day

The Cubs bullpen tried as hard as they could to give the game away Saturday night in the Cubs 6-5 victory over the Brew Crew. The bullpen has not looked good at all to start this year. I think it is time to call Samardzija back to the majors. We are seeing that Cotts and Guzman cannot get the job done. Why we ever signed Cotts I still don’t know. He has done nothing to help himself or the team from day one and I think Kevin Gregg might have walked his way right out of the closer role. Lou was quick to get Marmol in to close out the game. As for the big left-handed bats we just had to have, they have been nowhere to be found; Milton Bradley hitting a roBUST .080 and Aaron Miles .000. It’s nice to see the lefty bats we had in-house can carry the load for them; Fukudome with two bombs and hitting over .400, Fontenot with a homer and also hitting over .400, and also having Hoffpauir just sitting around. I love D. Lee as much as the next guy but how long can you keep Hoffpouir out of the line up? Lee is hitting .100 with no home runs and only 2 RBI’s. His numbers were down last year and are just continuing to bottom out. Hoffpouir is not gaining anything sitting or going back and forth between Iowa. I know he has only played in 35 big league games but a .347 average with 26 hits means it might be time to make some moves. At least Aramis and Soriano are off on the right start. Soriano with some help from Fukudome saved the Cubs from giving up two straight to the Brewers tonight. Soriano’s 9th inning bomb put them ahead for good. All and all not a bad start to the season, but Lou better put the bullpen woes to rest soon and wake up Bradley and D. Lee’s bats or it could be another long season.

Amen to that!

The simple fact is that just by having a lefty and righty in our lineup the pitcher has to adjust more. Bradley and Miles will come around just like everyone else. Lest just hope they all they healty.

Unlucky

So Bradleys hitting is all about Luck ? That would explain a few things.Miles has had 3 at bats and no I do not see him as a big bat either. But you give away Derosa to get a chump like Miles who is not even half as good. When it was the bullpen or a 3rd starter they should have spent the money on.Not Bradley.I hope your right, hope he does come around.

They didn't give DeRo for Miles

They gave DeRo to put Fonty as their starting second-basemen, which has worked out great so far.

I have some thoughts

I see you are relatively new here. That’s great and I’m happy your sharing your thoughts. Paragraphs and commas are your friends though this is really hard to read. In fact I pretty much gave up on reading it for content after the first three sentences. Keith may be right by saying calm down I don’t know because I couldn’t get that far. Also it seems like a jumble of thoughts which further stresses the need for paragraphs. No offense intended this is supposed to be light humor but the points stand.

Nothing worse than an e-mail or a blog post in which the writer is too lazy to use the shift button and the whole damn thing is in lower case letters. Fortunately, I don’t think there are any of those at BCB. None that I can think of anyway.

Another long season?

What, like the last two Division Title seasons? They’re 3-2, have gotten pretty solid starts, and are working out the bullpen kinks, like many teams.

Gregg has not walked himself out of the closer role. He threw a lot of pitches yesterday, and Marmol was pulled early…too early in my estimation.

I like having Hoff around, but seriously? He won’t take DLee’s job. Just not gonna happen.

Take a deep breath, dude. Long way to go. At this rate you’ll be institutionalized by mid-season!

I have nothing funny or creative to write.

That's crazy

If you’re setting the bar of success at playoff wins and losses, you may as well not pay attention until October. Obviously, it’s all about winning but with a season 162 games long, the bar is not always playoff wins and losses. If it is, you’ll never enjoy the route it takes to get there.

Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

by krummy12 on Apr 11, 2009 11:17 PM CDT up reply actions

The Cardinals...

won 86 games last year with what many said was little to no talent. THAT was a successful season for them.

Forgetting about everything the Rays did last year, think about if they had just been over .500 for the first time. That would’ve been a successful season for them.

Its not always about winning playoff games. Theres 162 games before that, and even though the Braves only won one world series in the huge NL EAST champ streak they had (correct me if that is wrong), it was still a successful run.

Telling it how it is?

Is this your first season watching a team? 5 games is WAY too early to draw any conclusions about a team. Sure the bullpen hasn’t looked good and Lee is struggling but they have still manage to go 3-2 on the road against division opponents no less. Its not time jump off the cliff yet.

Funniest line in the whole thing:
That Miles is hitting .000 after 3 at bats….I think we should release him. What a bum. /major sarcasm.

Hoffpauir isn't ready to take over for lee

He never will be ready. Now I’m as upset as anyone that lee has been bad. He probably won’t be the three hitter very long if soto comes back and hits. We still need his glove and as a seven hitter he won’t be exposed as much. Hoffpauir isn’t going to be able to hit everyday enough to justify replacing lee on defense.

Hoffpauir

I agree that its probably way too early in Hoffpauir career for him to take over for Lee, but I’m still not convinced that he’s not going to be able to hit everyday. I think looking forward he might turn out to be a trade chip when we are looking for some bullpen help.

by jeff_pico on Apr 11, 2009 11:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Way too early

You do realize he’s 29, and not getting younger. If they’re gonna start this guy, they need to do it soon. If not, trade him, he’s probably in his prime right now.

I am not a fan of Lee

While batting in the 3 hole, getting only 90 RBI’s in the top run producing team in the NL is not good enough. DeRosa had 90 RBI’s out of the 7 hole.

Despite this, I still like Lee over Hoffpauir. Without DeRo, Lee is one of the only team leaders left, and to sit him would be making a major statement. He may not look that great when you look at his stats (as I said above) but what he does with his glove, as well as off the field, is worth it.

Bradley

This guy is a stud, and the only question surrounding him should be his health. He’ll hit plenty once he starts to get some breaks. Plus, it’s not like he’s not getting on base.

I think ARam and Lee should switch spots in the lineup; the former is clearly the better hitter and run producer at this point in their respective careers.

If you join a softball league and start telling the people how you think it should be done you might not end up enjoying yourself very much. But if you kinda watch how others do things instead, it will likely be a more enjoyable experience.

As for as inside jokes, most groups of friends, co-workers, families have them. You stay around you learn them.

Just a thought

This is one of the (if not THE) most popular blogs on the SB Nation. Many times, I’ve thought of posting something — but then, I’ve checked and seen that it has been posted already.

With the rapid-turn over of the fan posts, it really doesn’t take much to check back and see if your subject matter has been covered in the past 24 hours.

This is not a terrible problem, but just a little investigation can keep the constant duplication from happening.

Hey, some of the other SB Nation baseball blogs (or other sports, for that matter) have very little traffic. Posts at other locations might stay up for weeks. We’re passionate, and we’re everywhere. But, with that being said —we all need to be diligent about what we are bringing to the table.

Just look back a little bit, and see the older posts, that’s all.

And there’s no reason to jump down anybody’s throat, either. Save that for Dr. Crawdad.

Really?

It’s annoying when people use stats from the first five games of the year to determine how the rest of the season will go. Five games.

Micah Hoffpauir can hit, especially when he plays everyday against mediocre pitching. He’s not going to take D-Lee’s job. When he has to come off the bench in tough spots, I don’t know how great he’s going to be. In fact, he might be hurting the roster because he can’t back up anywhere but first and for an inning in the outfield.

Everyone needs to relax. The pen will be fine. We didn’t sign Cotts, we got him in a trade, big guy. Guzman looked real good in his first two outings, not so much tonight. They’ll be fine.

by serbianking33 on Apr 12, 2009 12:31 AM CDT reply actions

This is an extreme example...

but if you want to judge the Cubs lefties through 5 games, you might as well say that Soriano is gonna hit 97 HR’s. He’s on pace for that after 5 games… I dont see where it could go wrong! (sarcasm)

Although who says we all wouldn’t love to see Soriano hit 97 bombs.

Paragraph breaks are your friend.

A couple of comments:

First, the Cubs didn’t “sign” Cotts. He was traded for David Aardsma.

Second, if you could focus your post on one or two things, rather than just a catch-all post on the entire team, it would be easier to focus the responses. Again, please look at the various posts on the right sidebar having to do with posting — all it takes is to look down the list to see what good posts are made of.

Thanks.

As a fan of the Cubs and an longtime observer of baseball, I feel compelled

to respond to this ridiculous post. I have endured complaints about DLee and how lousy of a hitter he is and how Lou is crazy to have him hitting in the #3 spot. These complaints have been accompanied with other suggestions of how to fix the current Cubs lineup. Let’s start with some facts.

First, it’s 5 games into the season and the Cubs are 3-2 on the road. A win tomorrow would put them at 4-2 for the first road trip of the season. I have a news flash for ypu – LOU ISN’T GOING TO CHANGE THE LINEUP IF THE TEAM IS WINNING. Especially 5 games into the season with a winning record. It aint gonna happen folks.

Second, on the subject of the aforementioned Mr. Lee. In case anyone hasn’t noticed, DLee has hit many balls right on the screws, but has been unlucky. To the inexperienced folks out there, I feel I must inform you that managers don’t take veteran players out of the lineup and replace them with inexperienced guys 5 games into the season. I’m sure it hasn’t been lost on many of you that Milton Bradley’s BA is lower than DLee. I haven’t heard many suggestions of moving him down in the order or putting him on the bench.

Third, THIS IS THE FIRST WEEK OF THE SEASON AND THE CUBS HAVE A WINNING RECORD! Has it occurred to any of you making the crazy-assed suggestion of changing the lineup that a change could affect the guys that are hot right now? In case you have never witnessed a baseball season before, there are times when some guys will be hot and other guys won’t be. Baseball is a team sport. There are enough guy swinging the bats well enough for the team to win now. YOU DON"T CHANGE THE BATTING ORDER BECAUSE ONE GUY ISN’T HITTING .300! Especially if the team is winning!

Here’s a suggestion for all of you who are out on the ledge crying because DLee is in the #3 hole. CHILL THE HELL OUT! This is a baseball season. Managers don’t move veteran players around in the batting order like pieces on a chess boad because they go hitless for a game, especially if the team is winning!. This is a marathon, not a sprint. I know it’s driving you nuts, but Lou is going to give his players a chance to find their stroke. He’s not going to panic because DLee and Milton are off to slow starts. These guys are veteran ballplayers that have hit in the past and will hit again.

If you feel the need to make up a fanpost, talk about how you would like paint the ivy purple or what brand of beer you would like the Cubs to serve at the games. Maybe then your post will take on the qualitiy of something that makes a shead of sense and you will appear to speak about a topic that you really know something about.

dood

ok everyone seems to have hit all the main responses to your post. i will just add that milton bradly had a .436 OBP in 414 ABs last season. that was good for 1st in the AL. obviously, the concern for him is getting more ABs by staying healthy, not his F’ing BA through 16 ABs.

on a more macro level, i encourage you to look at OBP instead of BA. it is a much better measure of a hitter’s contribution to the number of runs his team scores. this blog post seems to sum it up pretty well – http://bleacherreport.com/articles/40132-on-base-percentage-vs-batting-average-which-is-more-important

You are correct.

The baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint. So many games, so many players involved, so much fluctuation in performance day to day due to the limited chances a player receives to produce (relative to other sports).

If you look back at the last two years during the regular season, there are countless FanPosts like this one, yet we won the division in both years (meaning the regular season panic was unwarranted).

The game requires patience to play and patience to watch, and with the Internet being as it is, patience is hard to come by.

It IS your opinion...

But when you post it in a FanPost, you invite people to critique your opinion and provide their opinion in response.

and especially when the opinion

is already raising BUST with Milton Bradley after 5 games.

Well before 5 games

I thought it was a bad pick up from day one.

your writing is fine

it’s just that most people here aren’t going to agree with basing any lineup decisions on 5 days worth of BAs. don’t let the criticism get you down – keep posting!

The writing is NOT fine...

It’s very difficult to read with the lack of paragraph breaks and random string of thoughts within sentences. I’d say that whether I agreed with the poster’s opinion or not.

Honestly, it’s not that hard to break up thoughts with paragraphs, and it is disrespectful (even if disrespect isn’t intended) to your readers to not make that little bit of effort. At the risk of sounding rude, such lack of editing shouldn’t be encouraged.

I agree with the last sentence, though. I definitely don’t want posters to feel ostracized (unless they are unduly rude to others on a regular basis). I just ask (and I’m clearly not alone here) that people an effort to make their posts readable.

sure, paragraph breaks would help

but i don’t really think paragraph breaks are much of a “writing” tool. i dont agree with you regarding a random string of thoughts within sentences. each of the original poster’s sentences is concise and pertains to only 1 subject.

just click on “edit” and hit enter each time you change the topic. it would look much better and all the editors on here wouldn’t be as upset.

Your last statement sums it up...

However, good grammar and paragraph breaks are absolutely a writing tool. Breaking up your thoughts into sensible paragraphs makes what you say have much more impact on the reader (or at least a better chance of the reader having any interest in reading what you say). And as you said, it can really be as simple as using a new paragraph each time you have a different thought.

And you don’t have to be an editor to be annoyed by reading one long paragraph of text that jumps from thought to thought. It’s not like we’re critiquing minute grammatical issues. Paragraph breaks are a pretty basic grammatical tool.

Agree Absolutely

As does the bible of writing, The Elements of Style. We’re dealing in a written medium so we should take care with what we write in order to get our thoughts out into the blogosphere with some degree of clarity.

According to Strunk & White:

Make the paragraph the unit of composition: one paragraph to each topic.

If the subject on which you are writing is of slight extent, or if you intend to treat it very briefly, there may be no need of subdividing it into topics. Thus a brief description, a brief summary of a literary work, a brief account of a single incident, a narrative merely outlining an action, the setting forth of a single idea, any one of these is best written in a single paragraph. After the paragraph has been written, it should be examined to see whether subdivision will not improve it.

The Cubs NEED

Cotts. He’s their only lefty from the pen. If they send him down the pen has ZERO lefties.

Yes and no...

They need a guy who can consistently get LH batters out. Typically, that guy is a LH pitcher. So the Cubs need Cotts only if he can fill the LOOGY role. If he continues to not pitch well in that role, there isn’t a need for Cotts. It doesn’t make any sense to keep a guy in the pen just because he’s LH – he needs to be LH and effective at getting LH batters out.

Hopefully, Cotts bounces back. But if he keeps pitching poorly, the Cubs would be better off replacing Cotts with somebody who can get guys out, whether that guy is LH or RH.

I posted this in another thread, but it bears repeating.

If Jason Waddell throws well at Iowa, he could replace Cotts. Lou liked Waddell in spring training and Waddell seems to me to be more of a traditional LOOGY than Cotts.

Soriano's Defense

I have criticized Soriano’s defense in the past. I am happy to see that he is playing a better left field this season. He is getting better jumps on balls out there. Sori’s legs must be feeling better. This is very encouraging.

Telling it how it is...

…in one, long, confusing, hysterical (literal meaning), small-sample-based, grossly inaccurate paragraph.

Thanks for sharing, but please do us all a favor and promise you won’t be doing this every six games.
