hey question for you:
why doesn’t a manager use his closer everyday because he’s probably your best reliever? Even if you’re down 3 runs, he’s your best pitcher so you should just use him anyway. I mean he’ll get you outs because he’s your best pitcher right…
by lexmarklover on Apr 12, 2009 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Dude
We’re not down by three! We’re up by three! Yes, that’s when you use you best relievers.
How hard is that to understand?

why don't managers like to use their closer 4 or 5 games in a row
by lexmarklover on Apr 12, 2009 10:04 PM CDT up reply actions

he put a bunch of pitches
right down the middle. He’ll get another shot, but not when there are other options.
And if you trot out some other reliever, and he blows the game
Everybody says, “Why didn’t you bring in Marmol?”
And it’s a fair question
Team Speed Kills. All SEC, all the time.
it's also a fair answer to say
that I dont want to burn him out so i decided to give him a day off

there’s no right or wrong answer to the question. but lou has to realize that in a season you can’t always rely on the same guy to get crucial outs. you need more pitchers

Well technically
he DID save 4 runs since that’s how many would have scored had he not made that play. Now, if you count subsequent plays in the inning (even though they happened right after) his net save would probably be 2
but one did score on the sac fly
Fielder got 1 RBI but not 4

Wow he is on point tonight
So fun to watch
http://thegettinplace.blogspot.com/
This is why nobody understands this Gregg/Marmol discussion.
Marmol is too valuable (and too good) to be used in only 1-2-3 9th innings. He needs to be used in high leverage, game-changing situations. Not once we already have the lead, but when we need to maintain it or prevent scoring. That’s why Carlos is a better 7-8 inning weapon than a 9th inning one. The ESPN guys don’t get that. It’s not a controversy, and Lou even addressed this YESTERDAY in the post-game.
Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.
I agree.
And though I dislike him like most people on this board, Steve hillips did say he understood that point. At the same time, Gregg presents a problem, no doubt about it.

And, from virtually every appearance I’ve seen from Gregg, yes, I have to agree. He is not good. At all. Let’s see what Heilman does in the coming weeks. I do feel he could serve as an 8th inning set-up to White Castle. But hey. It’s early.
