My Weekend at Miller Park

I originally started typing this as a comment in the game recap, but it got pretty long so I figured I'd share it as a FanPost.  With all the recent crap on the sidebar I figured people might be interested in a semi-detailed review of the weekend, with thoughts of both actions on the field as well as off.  With that out of the way...

Saturday: Got there real early and tailgated with some friends.  If you've never done it, grab a good crew, a grill, some food and plenty of beer and make sure you experience it at least once.  It's always a good time and you don't have to drop $50 on food/beer inside the stadium if you load up beforehand.  Plus, there's some friendly (for the most part) banter between fans that reminds you how much fun a good rivalry can be if people remember they're supporting baseball teams instead of rivaling countries in a war.  Inside, the crowd definitely seemed a bit more rowdy than it was on Sunday.  Obviously people are going to be drinking more on a Saturday night, but I saw plenty of fights.  In all fairness, I was up in the cheap seats where people tend to drink more heavily.  But I pass the blame equally on Cub fans and Brewers fans.  Stuff like that you never want to see, but every team has some morons who can't handle their booze and are just looking for a fight.

As for the game itself, I remember saying to my friend in the 8th inning "Fontenot HAS to reach just so Soriano can get an at bat in the 9th".  Well we all know how that worked out.  That ball was a no doubter and man did the Brewers fans get quiet after that.  After the game I saw at least one idiot throw his beer down on fans below, but again I don't generalize a fan base based on a couple of drunk idiots.

Sunday: Much better seats (207, RF corner).  Watching Dempster struggle with his command was painful, but he got through 6 and that was good enough to get the win.  Of course all of those walks issued by the Brewers dragged the game out to a painful 3+ hour length, and you could just sense the frustration in the stands growing.  The boo birds were out in full force for Suppan when he got yanked, so next time a Cub gets booed at Wrigley for a poor performance just remember that it's not only Cub fans who boo their team at home (not endorsing it, just saying it's not a Wrigley-only experience).

Unfortunately, I didn't have a view on Reed's catch.  I remember tracking the ball as it was in the air and channeling the Major League inside me thinking 'too high, it's too high!'.  Fortunately it was.  Every Brewers fan in my section went nuts when it went out of sight, so I assumed it was a home run but really couldn't tell.  I quick looked back towards Prince to see him walking off the field really slowly while looking back towards Reed and knew I must have missed something incredible.  Then came the replay... man that's a catch we'll be talking about for a while.  They only showed the replay once (which I guess I understand because it was a good play by the Cubs after all) but you knew right away how amazing that play was.

Marshall looked really sharp from my seat.  I could see he had his curve ball really working, getting it over for strikes and it looked like it had some nice break on it.  Obviously Marmol looked fantastic as well, although sometimes I think he leans on his slider a bit too much (but hey, if I had a slide piece that nasty I'd probably do the same thing).  Gregg was... well... I think everyone has their opinion of him already, so I'll just say that I think he'll start to turn it around.

Overall a very enjoyable experience at Miller Park this weekend.  Had a great time tailgating with friends Saturday and took my little brother to his second straight awesome game at Miller Park on Sunday (Z's no hitter the first).  Overall I'm 5-2 in my last 7 games there and Soriano has homered in the last 3 Cubs/Brewers games I've been to there.  Also, something I put on my list of things to do at my next game there, I noticed a build-your-own baked potato stand that looked absolutely incredible.  I never thought I'd consider a baked potato at a baseball game, but after seeing some of the potatos people bought there I was salivating (I settled on the cheese fries in the helmet, I can never resist those).

One final note: as someone who has lived in Wisconsin for a while, I've noticed that a lot of people on here have no problem calling Brewers fans classless yet continue to bash them on here just because they're from Wisconsin.  Ironic.  You think there aren't idiots at Wrigley who would cheer Prince betting hit?  How soon we forget bleacher fans trashing the field with garbage.  Every team has moronic fans, and unfortunately the few idiots stand out sometimes a lot more than than the respectful majority.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Glad you enjoyed it.

I always like reading first-hand reviews from road games, so I figured I’d throw mine out there as well.

We had awesome seats.

14 rows from the field, just beyond first base ($55 off stub hub) for Saturdays game.

I agree with your observations. A few bad apples on both sides, but all in all the majority were behaved.

The ice on the cake was coming home yesterday to watch the replay. There is a shot of Carlos Villanueva’s reaction as Sori hits the homerun and I could see myself pretty clearly in the background. I was going nuts!

You're right -- it is a (vocal) minority of fans

It bugs the hell out of me when Cubs fans respond in kind. I think I’m more sensitive to it than a lot because, like you, I’ve got rooting interests on both sides of the state line.

Miller Park is great

I like that place a great deal. In fact I catch a handful of games in Milwaukee every season against opponents I find interesting (e.g., Minnesota Twins). Very fan and family friendly atmosphere, great food and great continuation of the old County Stadium tailgating tradition.

I would give my left nut for the Cubs to build a ballpark like Miller Park that incorporated the bricks, ivy, scoreboard. My sentimentality for Wrigley has completely dried up after 30 plus years of going to games at Clark and Addison. How great would it be to have a great new old ballpark located right off the Kennedy where the 75% of us from the suburbs could actually conveniently get to and park at.

So, where would exactly you like this edifice?

“Off the Kennedy?” Huh? So you want — the Cubs/the city to just declare ‘eminent domain’ and disrupt thriving neighborhoods? What neighborhood “off the Kennedy” do you speak of? Specifics, please.
Would you like it at Fullerton Avenue? A stadium built over the old Morton Salt plant? Or, how about plunking it down right at Cicero Avenue, the Edens and the Kennedy — would that help your commute?

If you are so inconvenienced by heading to Clark & Addison, you do have the — “don’t attend” — option.

I could care less what a mamby pamby jazz listener living in San Diego thinks

Before Mayor Daley gets indicted by U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald …. JUST ONCE I would like to see him do right by the Cubs. If Ricketts wants to do an extreme makeover of Wrigley, then I want the city of Chicago for once NOT to be obstructionists. If Ricketts wants to build a state of the art new ballpark, then I want Daley to help enable the process in whatever fashion he can.

Good luck with help from the Politicos....

Did you notice the economy lately? No city is going to contribute to any stadium project anymore.
Only the Olympic Games have a fighting chance to gain public money, along with whatever corporate money that might be available. I think it’s reasonable to argue the games will leave a lasting legacy for Chicago.

These days, many taxpayers on both sides of the political spectrum see these new parks as corporate welfare. However, I’m biased. I tend to think they are helpful in so many ways to a city, both with tangible and intangible benefits. I think we are on the same page in that line of thought.
.
But now you call for a ‘rebuild’ of Wrigley Field. That, I can agree with. But, you still haven’t answered my question about a location of a new ball park, outside of the vague, “…off the Kennedy.” Seems to me, a reasonable enough question.

I’ve stated on these pages many times a specific North Side location for a ball park. (I’m not going to re-state the entire post, but it’s land bounded by Harlem Ave on the west, Forest Preserve Drive on the North and Irving Park Road on the south.) But it is not ideal since it’s “off the Kennedy” by a few miles on surface streets, and not public transportation friendly. It would be even more grid-locked than Wrigleyville. (As far as I know, this is State of Illinois land. But it’s been a few years since I’ve been in that area.)

But, at least I’ve stated a ball park location on these pages. I’m waiting to hear about your site.

(There was no name-calling in the writing of this post.)

Don’t get me wrong: I love Wrigley. But the place is a craphole and it takes forever to get there, especially when you take the Metra (which is always late getting to your station and even later getting to Chicago).

Cool post.

I always like readiing “fan on the scene” accounts like this. Were I a Brewers fan, I’d be a little concerned about how well the Cubs have played in Miller Park over the last year or so.

Nice info

I am heading to the game on Mother’s day with my family. Never been to Miller Park, interested to see how it looks. I’ll have to try to convince the family tailgating would be a great idea.

"Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living."

Ditto re: Saturday night's game

Six of us tailgated for an hour or so before the game… we brought a grill, had a nice spread including grilling some nice strip steaks. Including beer the cost was probably around $20/person and we didn’t come close to eating all the food. Tailgating is a great way to enjoy the pre-game and you can get good food and not pay an arm and a leg.

I had the same comment in the 8th, that the Cubs somehow needed to get a guy on base so Soriano would be able to get an atbat and potentially others in the top of the 9th. Great ending to what was a very frustrating game in innings 1-8.

Good stuff.

I really don’t appreciate mouthy fans on any team — and we have more than our share, to be sure.

And in any case, this is far more informative and constructive than the meta-FanPost rubbish that’s been clogging up the site lately.

+1 These are some of the posts that make BCB so worthwhile.

I posted one of these last year from Kauffman, and will do another one when I visit the “New” Kauffman in two weeks. Great review. I’m a UW graduate and absolutely love Miller Park; we did plenty of party buses and tailgating in Miller’s parking lot during my tenure in Madison. Great stadium. I think the fans are usually pretty jolly and banter back and forth; I’ve never had a problem being a Cubs fan in Milwaukee.

UW

For me, I was a student in the final years of County Stadium and made a few trips from Madison. Two notorious games, too. One was the Brant Brown game. The other was a Cubs-Rangers game and it was baseball giveaway day. Brewer fans started showering Ranger players with baseballs at one point and Johnny Oates pulled his team off the field.

In those days, fans at County Stadium elevated being drunk to another level. I will always have the image of a drunken woman up on some guy’s shoulders. She was not wearing a shirt, only a bra/bikini top and it was about 40 degrees out.

My Trip

Great post. I had pretty much the same experience this weekend.

Live in Madison, headed into Milw for the Sat & Sunday games. Upper deck seats for Saturday night, right on top of home plate. I was in a really pro-Cubs section, so it was nice. Funny, great minds must think alike, because as Fontenot had his great, 13 pitch at bat in the 8th, I commented “He needs to get on, because then Sori will definitely come up in the 9th.” And when Sori went yard……WOW. That was awesome. Marmol looked great as well, its so much funny to watch him buckle the knees of guys like Fielder and Braun, especially looking from overhead. Just nasty stuff.

Sunday was a great game as well. I was actually in what felt like a Brewer heavy section (231), there happened to be a huge Cubs contingent in the sections to my left, near the left field foul pole and in the LF bleachers. Incredible catch by Reed Johnson, I think everyone thought that Fielder hit one into the 3rd deck w/ how high that one got, and how loud the stadium got. We were ALL amazed by Reed Johnson. The Brewers fans had one last chance to get excited in the bottom of the 9th, w/ Fielder as the tying run, but it was so sweet to end the 2nd game in a row w/ Princely K!

Great weekend for our favorite team!!

Obnoxious fans

Took my wife and her sister to Miller Park last summer. We had nosebleed seats in the second row from the roof. The Brewers fans behind us began using the worst profanity imaginable. I warned them, then eventually went down the catwalk and complained to management. They gave us three seats in the 200 level in front of the press box behind home plate!

I cornered two cops talking to a Brewers employee

I told the cops where the guys were sitting and they said they would probably roust them after we left. The club employee told me to go to guest relations. I did, gave them an example of the language and they printed up three new tickets.

Went to Busch last week.

Get to our seats and discover a group of four already in them. I figure oh well, there’s four open seats anyway, let’s just sit down. An inning goes by and we start chatting with the group when the girl next to me casually states her company has season tickets and it’s her first game. Well, the opportunity was too great to pass up, so we reply that it’s ironic since, well, you’re sitting in our seats. She doubts us but an inspection reveals us to be correct. They apologize immediately but I tell them it’s fine as long as nobody comes for our seats. She obviously felt really guilty cos about half an inning later they get up to leave…which began a two-team ordeal of finding exactly where section 134 really was.

I also vowed to my friend that, should I catch a foul ball, I would rip open my button-up shirt to reveal my BCB shirt underneath. It didn’t come to pass, but I was ready.

GREAT POST ON CUBS ROAD TRIP....

Look forward to more . Cub fans travel that is a fact just look in the crowd at away games . One of our favorite is Cincinnati in September . There was no better sight in Sept of 07 when thousands of Cub fans made their way to Cincinnati ….Great weather and Great time Cubs won 2 of the 3 games and were playoff bound . No September ball for the Cubs this September in Cincinnati . Not sure where we will end up at …Might just try to check out Miller Park .

I was in Cincinnati for the series in September 2008

and it was amazing. The Saturday night game when Soriano hit three homers must have had 30,000 Cubs fans in attendance. In fact, they wanted him to take a curtain call. Good thing he didn’t — in the opponent’s park, that would have been awful form.

Whats Miller Park like?

I’ve never been to their park. I lived 3-4 blocks from County Stadium and used to snooze at Brewers Doubleheaders in the left field seats. I really need to head up there. My Dad is buried right near at the Nat’l Cemetery. I was driving from Chicago to MN and caught the Friday game on WGN. We had nutty people at County Stadium back in the day when the White Sux were in town. I hear the new generation of fans at Wrigley aren’t too polite either.
