Would Milton Have Gotten The CATCH RJ Made? (take 2)

After last night's unreal catch that Cliffy Reed made to rob Fielder (and he was classy enough to tip his hat, so you have to respect the man for that), the mind boggles: would Milton have made that catch without going on the DL?  I mean I think he'd have made a heck of a try, but would it have happened?

And I'm not here to bomb or blast Milton .. so let's lay off the guy for his groin pull .. just to ask do you think his skill set would have matched that of Cliff's Reed?

(PART II : I promise hereafter to ensure my medications are up to date, properly consumed, and in circulation within my synapses before ever turning to BCB again .. Promise.

Thanks for the Thread Police to keep me straight - YOU have a purpose!)

If he's talking about Cliff Floyd...

There is no way in hell that catch gets made.

Agreed.

All due respect to Cliff, he wouldn’t have even been on the warning track when that ball went over the fence.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the reason. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

the hill in CF
Tal’s Hill, for team president Tal Smith, an element taken from Crosley Field and other historic ballparks (in a bit of gallows humor, the hill is also known as the “Grassy Knoll”), and the flagpole in play, an element taken from Yankee Stadium before its remodeling in the mid-’70s and Tiger Stadium among others. Milwaukee Brewers player Richie Sexson once hit a ball off the flagpole and there is still a mark there.

I don't get the point

of this post. Reed Johnson made the catch, enuff said. Its a pretty well established concept that MB is an injury risk — if he can pull his groin running a base he most certainly could pull it trying to make a catch. What more discussion can we have on the topic?

Cliff Floyd would not have been able to get off the ground to make that catch.

Cliff Anderson

http://www.midwestsportsfans.com/2009/02/prospect-corner-cliff-andersen/

I do not know if he made a catch or not, but we do have a Cliff playing OF in the organization

Chicago Cubs Prospect Cliff Andersen

■6’2"
■190LB
■OF
■Bats: L
■Throws:L
■Drafted by the Cubs out of Cottonwood HS (Salt Lake City, UT) in the 9th round of the 2006 draft.
Physical Description: Good athletic body, well proportioned, rangy and strong.

Strengths: Extremely athletic, plus runner (6.6 60), average arm strength for a RF’er. Quick hands at the plate, and should generate power in the future.

Weaknesses: Very raw, has not developed accordingly to plan, applauded for his approach at the plate in pre-draft workouts & has struck-out 238 times in 704 ABs. Despite the 238 strikeouts, indicative of a struggling power hitter, he has only 4 HRs in those 704 ABs as he has not been able to translate impressive rounds in the cages into game action. This is caused by a poor approach with two strikes. He pulls off the ball and seldom goes gap to gap, and struggles with the breaking ball.

Likely Destination: Should repeat at Peoria to improve on his .221/.306/.298 numbers last year. Most optimistic scenario is that he does well t Peoria and shows enough progression with his approach at the plate to possibly end up at Daytona. Most pessimistic scenario is that he struggles early at Peoria, ends up at Instructional ball until Boise begins, and finishes the year at Boise.

Major League comparison: N/A

Likely career path: It’s hard to say at this point given how far he needs to go just to project as a starting RF’er, but he has the tools to do so. The Cubs certainly won’t give up on him as they highly value his tools and spent $155,000 to sign him (well above the norm for a 9th rd. pick). There isn’t a log-jam of OF’ers coming up the pipeline, so the Cubs can and will be extremely patient with Andersen waiting for him to become the prospect that they believe he can be,

Yeah, you all know who I meant … sorry for sounding like a lobotomized fool for posting it.

Don’t know where my head was in the 10 minute break in the middle of a mad morning when I wrote that. Guess the degenerative brain disease is kicking in.

wikipedia has

Reed Cameron Johnson, no mention cliff or cliffy. But it appears that the cliff part was simply a mistake. I reserve the right to refer to RJ as Cliffy from this point forward though.

OK, so now that the poster has made his point

The short answer is:

Who cares? Sometimes, you need breaks in a season. No, Bradley wouldn’t have made that catch. Hell, if you give Johnson 10 tries at it, he might not make it 7 times.

There is no such thing as an ugly female breast

by Worf on Apr 14, 2009 9:57 AM CDT reply actions

A better question might be

would PIE have made that catch. And the answer is “it’s possible, but there’s no way to know for sure.” Bradley making that catch? Probably not. It was skill and luck and the luck part you can’t control.

FWIW, I think Felix could've made it.

He’s (probably) faster than RJ, so he would’ve been back there sooner and could have timed his jump just as well.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the reason. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I agree

but everything had to go right for RJ to make that catch — even just a bit more momentum would have made the angle of the balls travel impossible to reach, for example — so who knows?

No...

pure and simple.

So a pseudo-freak injury – if we can really call it that – had a huge impact on the Cubs winning the game; wow…
