Mark made Tigers baseball fun again in 1976. Those were the years

of Tom Veryzer and Gary Sutherland at short and second base. There was a lot of bad baseball played under Ralph Houk.

This was a year before Trammel and Whitaker arrived and were generally considered the dark years in Detroit sports. The Red Wings and Pistons were bad and the Lions were, well, the Lions for cripes sake.

Mark was a breath of fresh air and a joy to watch. His brief career was a quick rise to the top, followed by years of trying to recover from injuries and bouncing around between the majors and minors.

Sort of like another Mark we all know. Of course, Fidrych didn’t make millions back then and couldn’t live off that one good year or his signing bonus…or get paid millions to continually rehab…

“Maaahk”, we’ll miss you. Rest in peace.
