Where did Blanco go?
Thought he retired…. it’s tough for me to choose who I’d want. I’d want either Wood (sentimental side) or DeRosa. You can never have too many ultra-utility guys like DeRosa. Woody… as much as I love him, I think we’ve got Marmol to heal that wound. I have always liked Marquis. He eats up the innings. If only he were a little easier on the payroll.
Can't wait for the Cubs in '08!!!
Blanco is in San Diego
I believe he’s even their starter.

Henry is the #1 for the Padres.
He is even surpassing what was expected, offensive-wise. He’s being asked to tutor the young pitchers, and Nick Hundley, whom the Padres are projecting as their catcher of the future. (No relation to the other Hundleys. )In many ways, this might be a great deal for him — I wouldn’t be surprised to see Blanco as a coaching candidate after his playing days are over.
This could be considered a transitional stepping-stone gig, for him, which wouldn’t have been possible with the Cubs. Whether the Padres win or not shouldn’t be important to him — but his ability to teach should be.

Why couldn't he have had such a role with the Cubs?
I hope the Cubs offer him a coaching gig when he’s done playing.

I wonder
I wonder if going back to the Cubs where his brother who was killed spent some time with him was too painful at least at first.

Well, of course
money played a big role….he asked for a pretty princely sum for a player who was slated as a back-up. (I don’t remember what his agent wanted) Blanco signed with the Padres for much less than he asked for from the Cubs.
Like many other free agents, Blanco (thru his agent) misread what the market was going to bear. Since the payroll of the Pads (save for yoo-know-hoo) is quite small, and Nick Hundley was going to be the starting catcher if nobody else was available — guys like Blanco and Cliff Floyd signed rather paltry deals with San Diego.
The Pads do believe the Hundley kid might be their future catcher — as early as next year — but they wanted a vet to make the transition — Blanco was the best catcher who needed a job.

PS
Thanks for the updates!
Can't wait for the Cubs in '08!!!
It would be cool if they could somehow be automatically updated moving forward.

I would definitely take back Wood
Fontys been great at 2B, although I did love DeRo, he wasn’t much of a loss because of Fonty. So nonetheless, because of the minor bullpen struggles, I’d take Woody back.

Blanco.
Both so Geo has another year to pick his brain, and because he seems like a good influence on the clubhouse. Wood is a close second for the same reasons, albeit with pitchers instead of Geo.
I left my clever sig line in my other pants.
Are we supposed to choose based on those stats or just in general?
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
Base it on the stats if you want...
but just in general who do you want back? I expected mostly DeRosa answers.
I just thought this Fanpost was a bit ironic...
…seeing as how we’ve all been screaming about not making snap judgements based on the insanely small sample of a week’s worth of play.
IN ANY CASE, if I had to choose just one in a vacuum – meaning not considering salary or roster factors/complications – I would say Kerry Wood, too. And not for sentimental reasons, either. He was simply a very, very good pitcher last year, and I think he’s found his late-career role as a closer. I think Woody will be better this year and, paired with Marmol, he would have given the Cubs one of the best one-two game-ending punches in the National League. (Only Putz-KRod in New York come to mind as equal or better.)
I was actually tempted to say Ronny Cedeno, believe it or not, because the Cubs still have a decided lack of depth on the left side of the infield, even though Fontenot has looked better at third base than I expected. But, surprisingly enough, Cedeno’s career UZR/UZR 150 numbers at shortstop, where he has 1,589 innings of major league experience, are decidedly bad: -7.7/-6.7. But that is based mostly on his awful ‘06 season. In any case, I guess I’m still willing to give Hendry the benefit of the doubt on leaving his options open for a backup 3B/SS for the time being.

Wood
Haven’t given up on Gregg yet, but Wood would definitely be my pick.

as a pitching coach someday

Yeah, Wood would make a great pitching coach
he could teach proper mechanics to all of the young’uns. Oh, wait…

See? That wasn't so tough after all.

I heard it's nice there this time of year.

The fact of the matter is that none of these players will be Cubs in 2009
barring unforeseen circumstances. While having some of them still on the roster may be useful, I don’t find it very productive to remain in “what if (insert player name) were still around?”
The 2009 Cubs are the 2009 Cubs for better or worse, and I’ll support them. Looking back at last year’s team will take away from that, at least for me.

For what it's worth
I think the reason for these posts and the comments regarding Wood and DeRosa especially is that last year was such a magical season, except for the playoffs. Wood and DeRosa were major fan favorites and I don’t remember clearly the last time the Cubs traded/released such productive players that wanted to stay here.
Personally, Wood was my favorite Cub, I don’t have one right now. I was fortunate to meet him after his final rehab stint in 2007 and weird as it may sound, a part of me left when he went to Cleveland. He has always impressed me with his loyalty, professionalism and rapport with us Cub fans.
Time and winning heals all wounds. If Gregg produces and we get to the promised land, he will be a fan favorite as well.

I'm suprised Daryl Ward hasnt found a job.
I know he kind of had an off year last year, although he was hampered by injuries. The year before though, I thought he was one of, if not the best pinch hitter in the game. I remember the grand slam he hit against the cardinals.. and the 9th inning HR off Gregg are some of his big hits that come to mind.
Also, he had a great eye and usually put together a good at-bat, especially for coming off the bench.
Anyone agree/disagree?
Yeah,
Ward signed with the Reds but then he was released in Spring Training.
Marquis
that allows Marshall to help solidify the pen and be the swingman. He might not be the best on the list, but might best fit a need.

Agreed
I’m surprised to find myself saying this, but I fear he might be the most missed. Marquis pitched a lot of innings. It’s hard to see Marshall or any combination of fifth starter candidates getting through nearly as many innings. Add in the probable babying of Harden, and the middle relievers on this team are seemingly going to have to pitch an awful lot of innings compared to last year. Which is not a happy thought.
and as crazy as it sounds
his PH ability might be missed, not as much but with our (potentially) weak hitting bench

Hey, you forgot Michael Barrett......
…who’s batting a cool .100 w/ 1 hit, 1 RBI, 1 walk, and 3K’s with the Blue Jays.

Yeah,
I did just the guys that were on the team last year. I also see where Matt Clement, who was in Spring Training with the Blue Jays retired.

Kerry Wood, but on a 1 year incentive-laden contract
Wood’s current 2 year, $20 million contract is ridiculous. Hence why he is now pitching for the massively overrated Cleveland Indians. Mark Shapiro gets talked about in the same breath as Billy Beane and Theo Epstein, which is ridiculous.
No love for Bob Howry?!

Howry and Wuertz. If I do this again in about a month or so I’ll include those two.
why not do a future Cubs one as well
