And So it Begins with Bradley

Looks like his injury will most likely keep him out until the weekend, at least that is what Jim Hendry hopes:

"He's going to miss some games, we knew that," Hendry told WGN radio following Monday's home opener, which was played in the chill and mist at the Friendly Confines. "He's a very strong guy, very tightly muscular from the lower half down. He's going to have some pulls and strains ... we're hoping to minimize the damage and get him back out there as soon as we can."

The rest of the article can be found here: http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=286464&src=152. I don't like this and this was definitely predictable. Combined with the flu epidimec and this, I have a bad feeling about Bradley's tenure..

Think it's over-reacting

Look again at what Lou said, it’s something they knew was going to occur from time to time.

Aches and strains are a part of the game, unless you are Cal Ripkin the odds are that once in a while you will sit out due to minor creaks and groans.

While I want Bradley out there for 162 games I’m being realistic that it won’t happen but at the same time I won’t agonize unless it’s a major tear or a broken bone or something else devastating

If the world didn't suck we would all fall off.

I see your point

But if he has a major injury, especially a broken bone, then we’ll all be saying, “Well, it was a freak play/accident/thing.” So if we can’t bitch when it’s a minor pull, and we certainly won’t bitch if it’s major, when can we bitch? I don’t know about all you, but I need my bitchin’ time/space. Just ask my wife. It’s one of the reasons she’s stated in not wanting to watch more Cub games with me. I’m trying to keep it down this season though, for her sake.

My wife actually will be watching the games when I’m at work. She gives me updates. She’ll even listen in on the XM radio if it’s not on WGN. I guess I picked right.

It's not surprising

I don’t see how most of them don’t come down with something. Playing this game in the 30 degree range must really really suck.

This is unfortunate

but I think the Cubs should be careful with this one. Putting Bradley out there too soon will only threaten a more serious injury. What is more, the weather is not the best in Chicago right now (it’s still cold and wet after the last two days), which only increases the risk of a more severe injury. Give Bradley his 5 days and we can have “fun” watching The Hoff chase balls around right field (the latter portion of this sentence is sarcasm).

I support the guy, but I just did not care for the signing. You know Dunn would have given you 150 games, barring a freak injury.

I think an interesting question to answer is:

Does an extra twenty to thirty games of Dunn make him more valuable to a team than a player like Bradley…or does Dunn short comings make those extra 20-30 games a wash or worse. Plus, can your team absorb the loss of Bradley for those 20-30 games and still make the playoffs. The Cubs are probably such a team…you just hope that he is healthy come playoff time since that is really where you are banking on him being more valuable than a player of Dunn’s ability.

i think we signed bradley for one reason...

…and that is to get production in october. now i obviously don’t think we can assume a playoff berth—cubs history is too painful to assume anything—and i think the nl central is, as usual, underrated. however, i’d much rather see the staff take an overly conservative route with this guy now and get his bat in there in the postseason.

I think it is safe to say

that Milton has a nice long history of being hurt. SO to think that he was going to be in 130 games is unrealistic. If gets 100 starts in the OF we will be lucky. This is MILTON BRADLEY, his whole career has been the DL.
No alarm for Ramierz because he has not spent a lot of time on the DL. Unfortunately the Cubs do not really have an adequate backup at 3rd, Oh thats right we signed Aaron Miles

130 games might be optimistic...

…but it’s not unrealistic. 150 games? That’s unrealistic. Remember Soriano’s first spate of leg injuries in ’07? He still played in 135 games. If managed properly, Bradley could see 130 to 135. Sure, it could be lower. But, IMHO, saying “100 tops” is far too pessimistic.

Good grief

Milton Bradley is a HUMONGOUS addition to the Cubs. Yet we have the "I told you so, I told you so !!! " contingent claiming he is a porcelein doll and will prove a horrendous addition. Good grief.

Nagging injuries are a part of a game. It is why good teams like the Cubs have quality depth in the form of Reed Johnson and Joey Gathright.

Bradley is 10 times more complete and important a ballplayer than Adam Friggin Dunn. And a lot better economic value too.

by BLou on Apr 15, 2009 1:01 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Only if he stays relatively healthy...

There’s no debate that, if he’s able to play 120 games per regular season (and he’s available in the playoffs), he’s a great addition to the team. Only a handful of people would suggest otherwise, and those people are simply hung up on his behavioral history.

But talent is not, nor has it ever been the issue with Bradley. It’s simply whether or not he can stay on the field. He has struggled mightily to do so throughout his career. For that reason, I’m not sure one should logically say that he’s unequivocally a huge addition to the team. He MAY be a huge addition if he stays relatively healthy. But it’s a very realistic possibility (moreso than just about any other player) that he won’t stay healthy.

I don’t think it’s appropriate to jump to “doom and gloom” or “I told you so” based on this one (hopefully minor) injury. But unless you’re completely in denial, the injury should at least raise the caution flag again.

I was among the...

…most vocally disheartened when this team signed Bradley, and I remain convinced it will ultimately prove to be a bad signing.

HOWEVER – this “injury” is a molehill, not a mountain. It is not an indicator of any more serious injury, nor is there any sign that Milton suffers from anything more than a boo-boo right now.

Milton Bradley is at least a 20-million-dollar man for our Cubbies right now, and we need him healthy and productive. We need him on the field, producing; and if that means questionably high numbers of days off for minor injuries, so be it. Better a week off for a boo-boo than 6-8 weeks (or longer) for something much worse.

He’s collecting checks from the Cubs, so I’m pulling for him. I’d rather he be handled with kid gloves than collecting checks as a spectator on the DL.

Sit him till he’s ready. Maybe a little break will even help shake-up his slump and get him raking. Right now, he’s “our guy,” and I want to see him 100% and putting up gawdy numbers.

I think the issue isn't

so much that people are concerned with the severity of this particular injury. It’s more so that people are unimpressed by it, and by that I mean many will be quick to call Milton a sally, and, well, there’s plenty of evidence to back such an assertion. For all of Gameboard’s talk of giving 110% every day when other guys only offer fractions of effort, he certainly seems to suffer flu-like symptoms and strains more than most. Now, like everyone—I hope—I am certainly rooting for MB. You only have to watch a few ab’s to realize he is gifted up there. I understand we want him healthy for a potential postseason, but to have his infamously, suspiciously brittle body already start to fulfill the prophecy on such a relatively mundane play this early in the season…well, people are going to be upset. And they may tend to expect more of it.

Whether or not the Bradley signing was worthwhile can't be judged until the

last out on the last day.

If he misses 150 games, the Cubs make the playoffs and he goes 6 for 15 in the first playoff series with some walks, and the team advances, it was worth it.

If the sky falls with every Gameboard muscle tweak and day off, this is going to be a very long season.

Let’s face it, Milton Bradley is not an everyday player. Let’s judge him on his season ending stats coupled with his playoff stats and go from there. Further, as long as Dome is producing, Bradley will be missed even less.

Deep breaths all.
