Notice the stands
It’s beautiful here in the smokies right now but still a little chilly for us fair weather loving folks.
i can’t wait to get over to the park this year, Just want it a bit warmer

Is Sandberg the heir apparent?
So, after we win the WS this year, and Lou retires (as I think he would in that circumstance). Does Ryno get the big league spot? They are certainly making him earn his way. I would hope so, I like the fire he seems to have acquired, I thought his HOF speach was spectacular, and think he would be a perfect spokesperson for the club.

It's very possible.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see him added to the major league coaching staff next year.

slightly off-topic, but
Is there a MLB rule on max # of coaches? For example, could you have a bench coach, and an assistant bench coach, or assistant pitching coach?
by BatCubFan on Apr 16, 2009 9:30 AM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
You can have five coaches in uniform.
A sixth can help during pregame, but not be in the dugout during the game (that’s what Ivan DeJesus does).
The Cubs five coaches during the game are Alan Trammell, Matt Sinatro, Mike Quade, Lester Strode and Larry Rothschild.

So what does Ivan do during the game?
Tidy up in the locker room? Update the stat books? Hang out with Pat Hughes during the 5th inning? I smell the need for some quality investigative reporting… by which I mean making something up that sounds good.

which begs the question
what does Pat Hughes do during the 5th inning?

They show him in the dugout in the dugout all the time

I think it's five coaches in the dugout
So Strode is in the bullpen and Perry’s in the dugout with Quade, Trammell, Sinatro and Rothschild.

I suppose one of the present coaches could get a manager's job somewhere.
If not, who would get “booted”?
Sandberg really is earning his shot and I hope he gets a chance. But, that doesn’t mean that someone like Trammel will necessarily be shoved aside.
Slightly OT: Any insight into why Jody Davis’ role changed? The organization seemed to be really high on him.

In my ideal world
In my ideal sunshine and lollipops world Lou lasts one more year and Ryno coaches under him next year for one season as some team finally wakes up and hires Trammel.

I still see Girardi coming back some day
If the Yankees don’t make it to the playoffs this year I think he’ll be fired. It could happen

One would think he's the heir apparent
There are also 29 other teams and if the Cubs don’t give him the big chair, he could get interest from other places.

Try two...
Lou’s contract ends after 2010. Going into 2011 would be Ryno’s window of opportunity for Clark and Addison. And based on the fact he went from low class-A to double-A makes me think the next stop will be the big city.
You’re right in general though, if Ryno is thrown the suitcase full of cash, he may bolt.

I could see him waiting a couple of years
If Lou signs an extension and there is an understanding that it’s Ryne’s.
But if they hire someone else, he’s gone.

There’s part of me that wouldn’t mind seeing him get a couple of years experience as a big league manager before he comes here.

Where is Jody Davis? I saw him at Fitch Park-
Is he with I-Cubs? I thought he might be next in line.

Jody Davis is now the minor league catching coordinator.
And yes, that’s considered a demotion.

Interesting
Because I thought I had read somewhere (last year) that Davis was ahead of Sandberg on their managerial depth chart.

He was at the time.
But I think Ryno moved ahead of him with his hard work last year.

It's Interesting....
I’ve had Jody as my team manager the last two years at Hundley’s Camp. Two years ago, at dinner one night we all were talking about the prospect of Jody managing the Cubs one day. He was asked about Sandberg and his quick response was a terse “What about him?” He wouldn’t say more than that about Sandberg, but Jody made it clear he wanted the job one day. This year, with his new assignment, he really, really didn’t want to talk about it, but you could tell he was not happy about it at all. Other former platers weren’t so shy about it and were pretty open about the fact they thought Jody got screwed in the deal. For what it’s worth, Davis’s managerial experience, baseball acumen, and overall demeanor as it relates to being a manager are more respected by former players than Sandberg’s. There’s a general feeling got in line and moved ahead as he has because of his name more than anything else. Right or wrong, there was no mistaking that from the guys willing to talk about it.

That's not what I've heard.
Management felt Sandberg worked harder than Davis. Being liked isn’t necessarily a quality that makes for a good manager. Dusty Baker was well-liked by his players. We all know how that worked out.

Well, I didn't say anything about management though
I was referring to the former players at Hundley’s camp. I also didn’t say they were right, it was just what they felt.
FWIW, in the past two years I’ve been around several of the ’84 guys, they tell stories about Sutcliffe, Sarge, Jody, Moreland, Smith, Frey, Trout but not once have I ever heard a Sandberg story.

Oh, I don't doubt...
… that the former players would be on Davis’ side.
Sandberg appears to have changed since he got into management. The Hall of Fame speech may have been our wakeup call to show this.

The thing is....
for those guys who spent time around Sandberg in the ‘80s, but haven’t spent a lot of time with him in the years since, there probably isn’t much to tell. If you listen to Sutcliffe talk about Sandberg as a player, he basically says that although they were good friends, Sandberg was the type of person who talked to you if you talked to him. Other than that, he was just quiet, and didn’t say or do much off the field. Great player, boring person, more or less. And I think a lot of guys view Jody Davis as more of a “manager” or “coach” personality than Sandberg based on what they were like as players. I admit, when I first heard Sandberg wanted to manage, as much as I love Ryno (my all-time favorite player) I was skeptical. I didn’t think he had what it took because he had a reputation as being so quiet and reserved. But in the days since he retired, if you ever listen to him speak, he seems completely different. He’s engaging, funny, and gives honest and thoughtful answers to questions he’s asked. As a player, the word he used most during interviews was “uhhhh….ummmm”. He nothing like that now, but I’m not sure guys who knew him as a player are fully aware of that, or the image of his old personality is just too ingrained into their minds. This is all just theories, of course, but it makes sense to me.
