OT - Blackhawks Playoff Win

What a game, winning in Over TIme last night (Havlat with the goal).  Mike Fontenot was at the game and said it was an amazing atmosphere.

Funny thing about this Hawks team, with their youth, Jonathan Toews will turn 21 on Wed Apr 29, 2009 which is also the date for game 7 at the Uniter Center if needed vs. Calgary.  Imaging that for a 21st birthday gift/party if this series does goes 7 games and Hawks win that game.

Awesome game

The Hawks have always been just behind the Cubs on my list of favorite teams and, up until last night, I had almost completely forgotten how great it is to be pumped up about the Indian Head in April.

For those here who don't follow the Hawks

A comparison to this turnround would be the Cubs having 7 straight 97 seasons and suddely making the playoffs.

Jay is our Quarterback. I REPEAT JAY IS OUR QUARTERBACK. Did I mention we have a Quarterback who happens to be named Jay?.

by puckishcubsfan on Apr 17, 2009 1:47 PM CDT reply actions

Actually...

since 1/2 the teams (16) in the NHL make the playoffs but only 8 teams in MLB make it, this would actually be the equivalent of the cubs having 14 straight seasons without a playoff appearance.

I was at the game last night, and it was honestly louder than any cubs game I’ve ever been to including Z’s No-No…

I still miss the Old Barn for hockey games

but I can only imagine what it was like.

Double the UC intensity

the last 2 games. As Pat Foley MC’ing the 1991 ASG said, “…welcome hockey fans across North America, including those in the Armed Forces Network, to the most exciting hockey arena in the world; Chicago Stadium”. No arena/stadium/field will ever match the noise level. The Barton organ by itself could easily have shook the building down. Throw in an “announced” attendance of 18,472 in that small footprint with double stacked balconies, close outer walls and nothing to absorb noise and those with sensitive ears left that place with a migraine.

I had ST’s from 1980-1994. 1982 they started to turn-around from the 70’s post-Hull debacle. Savard, Larmer & Secord with Wilson and Murray at the points was the most consistent PP unit I’ve ever seen.

A Cubs offence equivalent starting this season would be Fonzie and Bradley in the OF corners, Rami & D-Lee in the IF corners and Geo behind the plate.

Great, you were at the game

I’m trying to figure something out. I heard that a Chicago athlete got booed loudly at the game, do you know the player they were talking about?

I was also at the game

it seemed to me that Ryan Dempster got booed and i dont know if the fans were booing Lou Pinella or just yelling louuuu. The crowd seemed pro white sox because u could here the cheers for Ozzie

Definitely a pro-sox crowd.....

those were most definitely “boo” not “Lou” cries

Also scored the goal to send it into OT. Not a huge fan, but I follow them.

I won't try to equate anything to the Cubs because

Cubs ownership didn’t run the team into the ground by idiotic policies. Not spending enough money is one thing but it goes much deeper.

What really turned the ‘Hawks around on the ice was not the games going on TV, the popular belief. It started with cleaning house; first was “reassigning” Bob Pulford. Next was John McDonough’s hiring, followed this season by Scotty. Accountability is the word at 1901 W. Madison and I can’t be more proud of that assertion. It will be interesting to see how they handle the salary cap issues going forward.

Reed Johnson was there besides Fontenot and Demp. I got a chance to say hi to Rocky before the game started.

Cutler got a HUGE ovation for the ceremonial puck drop and they played the Bears theme song. The city is still amped about Cutler. Now they need some receivers.

The place was probably its loudest since its first game in early 1995 (48-game shortened season due to the lockout). While it was loud, it still won’t match the stadium but it’s not bad. Several times the “LETS GO HAWKS” chant started on its own.

I’m already jacked up for the game tonight but know the ‘Hawks will be facing a team that will increase it physical play especially early and am nearly 100% positive they will attempt to push the limit in how much they can interfere with Khabi and get away with it. Look for someone to be right near the blue paint as much as possible as they attempt to cycle the puck from behind the goal line. This young ’Hawks team must hold their composure just like they did Thursday, be patient, win the battles along the boards and use their speed in the neutral zone. Easier said than done but if they do that, they’ll go up 2-0 and have successfully defended the home ice advantage.

You're right about the "cleaning house" concept.

But what got the FANS back on the side of the team was the change in TV policy. It made a clear statement: “We want you to see our games.”

The fact that the team got good at the same time was pure serendipity for McDonough & Co.

Believe what you want

…however TV is only a part of it. Because the media cites that time and time again its going to be widely believed. You should know that, you’re in the media. You know all too well the squeaky wheel gets the oil.

There are many reasons and TV is one of them and certainly not the sole reason. It’s an important cog but if they just put games on TV and these other events didn’t happen, no way is the turn-around done nearly as quickly; not even close. It likely wouldn’t occur at all.

Accountability at all levels, hiring of Scotty Bowman (this is huge), the release of Savvy/hiring of Q (which BTW was not Dale’s doing) are major contributors. And I can’t stress this enough: The first move was to reassign Bob Pulford. You have no idea how that changed the organizations’ complexion. And it was done before any TV announcement.

Rocky made this happen. If Peter took over – which was widely believed and rumored shortly after Bill’s passing – it would have been business as usual.

They came right out and proclaimed the goal is the CUP. The “One Goal” slogan isn’t just a catch phrase, it’s the destination. I haven’t seen that in over 20 years. Previously, there were always 1 or 2 folks higher up with their own agenda. I’ll just say you’d be amazed if you knew what happened behind the scenes in management involving Mike Keenan, Darryl Sutter, Bob Murray, Dirk Graham, Brian Sutter and Denis Savard.

They marketed the team like it’s never been marketed it before. For years, the marketing campaign involved around, “…call Mildred…”

They showed commitment to spend money (whether its all wise money or not is a debate for another time) and now are at the top of the 2008-2009 $56.7M cap.

They mended fences with the former players and Pat Foley run out of there the past 37 years.

So if you think only the new TV policy got the fans back, so be it; but you’d be misguided.

I didn't say "only", did I?

Look, you’re a big Blackhawks fan and you see many more details than the casual fan, or the person who had sworn off the Hawks (me and many others) for decades due to the TV policy.

The stuff you mention got you, the hardcore fan, excited. The TV policy change got thousands of casual fans back on board. I trust you can see the difference.

Them being on TV

is what got me interested in them in the first place.

by sue369 on Apr 19, 2009 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

I lost a lot of Hawk interest in 1994

when it was affordable for me to see the new team in town, the Wolves. The Hawks did less to build a bridge with the fans for the next 14 yuears than the Wolves did each yaer. SInce Rocky took over (sadly due to a death) he has rebuilt that bridge. he has made all the right moves to recreate interest. Signing McDonough was brilliant, as he went to the NHL and told them that the Winter Classic was going to be at Wrigley and got it. he got the first ever Hawks Convention to not only happen but sell out faster than expected. Brought former players back into the hawk family (Hull=Banks in the Hawk fan eye, and so on).

The gasmes on TV was a big move as well. The Wolves have been on local TV in Chicagoland area which had helped their fan base, and now the hawks have done the same.

Biggest reason the interest is back tho is talent. They are winning with a group of players who the fans love and can approach. Toews, Kane, Sharp, and so on are all huge draws to the hawks and the NHL as a whole.

the talent too. I wouldn’t have cared about the talent if I hadn’t been able to watch them on tv though.

Didn't overtly say "only"

you tell me how you’d view this if I wrote it:

“But what got the FANS back on the side of the team was the change in TV policy.”

I’m just giving you some crap since the ’Hawks are to me what the Cubs are to you. No hard feelings buddy.

OT: What’s a casual fan??? Fan is short for fanatic, so therefore isn’t “casual fan” an oxymoron?

Totally different for a game thread

Sometimes I couldn’t keep up with a Cubs game thread. I wouldn’t even know how to do that for a ’Hawks game.

But since I’m either at 1901 W. Madison or watching on hi-def, suffice to say I won’t be on any game thread any time soon.

In fact since hi-def finally arrived in my home last fall, and now I’ve had the chance to see the Cubbies in hi-def too, I’m almost certain to be glued to the TV for Cubs games just like ’Hawks games.

All I can focus on right now is the ’Hawks getting out the gate quickly and neutralizing the Flames attack in game 3. The longer they can hold the Flames at bay the better. Patience will be rewarding this young team yet again if they can control the tempo.
