Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

That's harsh. Very harsh in my opinion. If Albert Pujols does the same thing does he get 2 games? Not in my opinion.

Well that's BS

But since he didn’t play yesterday can he play tomorrow if he doesn’t play today?
or
Can suspensions be retroactive

Nope

I don’t think it can be retro-active, but he’s going to appeal it and will be eligible to play against the Cards in the final two games.

Unbelieveable

So umps can just randomly call contact when they get extra upset now? This sets an ugly precedent that I hope will quickly be abolished during the appeals process.

by lswaidz on Apr 18, 2009 12:39 PM CDT reply actions

Not surprised

As far as the umpires know, he’s got a bulls-eye on the back of his jersey. Any little thing will be punished. One of the caveats that came with him when the Cubs signed him.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

This will be appealed

And knocked down to one game. I’m convinced baseball pads suspensions now, so post-appeal, they suspend the guy for what they really wanted to give him.

What's the point

Of bringing a suspension down 1 game? I think it’s the stupidest thing to appeal a suspension 3 games or under.

Why is it stupid to appeal?

You basically have nothing to lose, and in appealing, you can time your suspension. I Bradley’s case, he doesn’t even need to follow through on the appeal. Next time he get a pull or a strain that’s going to keep him out a couple of games, he can drop his appeal.

I think the appeals process is stupid, but the player or team taking advantage of it makes perfect sense. Or did I miss your point and you meant that it’s stupid to allow a suspension of under three games to be appealed?

Did anyone else see contact made?

Because I didn’t, MLB says he aggressively argued balls and strikes, I didn’t see it that way.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20090418&content_id=4326402&vkey=pr_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

“During this incident, Bradley aggressively argued balls and strikes and made contact with Umpire Larry Vanover. Bradley’s suspension is scheduled to begin during this afternoon’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field. Bradley has elected to appeal the suspension, and the discipline issued to him will be held in abeyance until the appeal process is completed.”

I didn't see it either

but apparently his cap’s bill glanced the ump’s bill, which proves the ump wanted any excuse possible.

by Emelie on Apr 18, 2009 1:15 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree its BS

But why appeal? Its a 2 game suspension, plus he has a sore groin- might as well just serve it now rather than when he is healthy.

by Manny Trillo on Apr 18, 2009 12:56 PM CDT reply actions

I also agree

that his suspension is better served now with the pulled groin muscle healing, but Bradley is defending his personal integrity and belief that he did nothing to deserve a two day suspension. Ultimately your dignity and personal honor are more important than the suspension itself, and for that I support Bradley completely.

What is sad about all these incidents is that MLB NEVER investigates WHY these things get started in the first place, holding to some weird belief that all umpires are infallible. One of these days I would love to see a decision reversed and an umpire suspended without pay by MLB for screwing something up; kinda like what happened to Bradley. Of course, I ain’t gonna hold my breath on this one.

by JFCubFan on Apr 18, 2009 1:39 PM CDT up reply actions

He's got nothing to lose by appealling.

Also, his suspension will likely be cut in half and he’ll sit out 1 game. Why not appeal?

again I am not surprised since the Umps cried that any line crossed now would be open for all others

Cubs have an option, appeal and wait for Bradley to be dinged again or sit him for the weekend.

that said whenever that ump comes to wrigley the fans should be there to offer him his props.

Two things.

First of all, this whole situation is so freakin’ stupid it would be funny if it were some kind of joke. But it’s no joke, and the umpires are making themselves look more and more like a bunch of spoiled prima donnas, which they supposedly are always accusing players of being.

Second, Tony LaRussa says he can’t believe the Cubs get away with making the comments they make about umpires. It appears to me they didn’t get away with it number one, and when have they ever made bad comments about umpires and gotten away with it? I can’t remember a time, so maybe Tony could enlighten us and provide an example? I’m not holding my breath for that, though.

Maybe this means he will play either today or tomorrow. Otherwise I’d think he’d just take it.

Jay is our Quarterback. I REPEAT JAY IS OUR QUARTERBACK. Did I mention we have a Quarterback who happens to be named Jay?.
