Milton

I was in favor of the Bradely signing and still like it.  You have to be kidding me though with the start he's had.  He's already missed games due to injury.  He's already been ejected from a game.  And in my opinion has already shown selfish behavior by appealing his 2 game suspension (2 games he probably wouldn't have played in anyway) because of "principle" .  I understand the suspension is questionable at best, but Milton swallow some pride, be a team player, and take the 2 games now while your not 100% anyway.  Having said that, I'd still rather have him then Abreu, Ibanez, or Burnitz.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Hey, at least he'll be something for all of us to discuss this year.

And maybe soon he can start playing baseball again….

"Selfish"?

Hardly. First of all, I cannot remember a player suspension that wasn’t appealed — it’s done as a matter of course. Second, I happen to think Bradley is right in this case — the umpire was being far too oversensitive over the tip of a couple of cap brims.

Finally, there are a lot of players who haven’t hit over the first week of the season. Bradley was, at least, drawing walks and contributing.

Incidentally, Jeromy Burnitz retired two years ago. Who mentioned his name as a possibility?

I don't see it as selfish

But he wouldn’t have played the games anyway. I don’t agree with the suspension, but it was stupid to appeal because he is hurt and wouldn’t have played. I can’t wait until he comes back and starts hitting.

has anything to do with the feelings of the umpire.

I'm guessing he meant Hermida.

Bulls and Hawks winning in the playoffs, Cubs' season off to a fresh start, and Cutler hysteria still simmering?

Just another day in Chicago sports.

Hmmm. You think Hermida might look good in the middle of this lineup right now? Just sayin’.

Hit for the cycle the other day, no? You definitely weren’t off the mark in suggesting he would’ve been a good pickup for the Cubs.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I was not a big fan of this signing

Dunn or Abreu would have been my choice. That being said, He is not being selfish on his appeal. All players or 99% of them appeal there suspensions. And in this case Bradley actually had a beef, he did not throw equipment, his beef lasted about 20 seconds, and the ump blew two calls in his sequence at the plate.
My only concern is keeping the guy on field. Bradley just can’t stay healthy, that is why it is so important that Dome stays on the ball.

6 games and the guy gets hurt.who would have thought. next time hendry needs to look at a players track record and think before he signs him.but this is the same guy who paid prior for 6 years to win 18 games.usually jim is pretty good but everyone makes mistakes. could bradley be one????

by NOMAR on Apr 19, 2009 8:49 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Completely disagree

Bradley may be hotheaded but I’ve not seen any selfishness. And, I heard an awful lot of crowing from people when he was red hot in Spring Training. Wish we could consolidate the repeat posts out there.

Bradley will hit. My only concern is injuries. I still view him as a good signing, even if he is the Man of Glass.

by Woodstock on Apr 19, 2009 9:02 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Selfish???

Give me a break. The suspension was absolutely ridiculous. It’s guaranteed to be reduced to one game. In fact, Selig MADE it two games so he could really suspend the guy for one game.

It’s also not just pride. You don’t get paid when you’re suspended. Also, the union wants these guys to appeal these things. I guarantee that every single guy in the Cubs locker room has no problem with him appealing.

And it’s not like the appeal process will take until Game 7 of the NLCS. He’ll likely serve this one game by the middle of May.

And Jeromy Burnitz???? Why not Brant Brown?

I didn't say he couldn't,

I think Bradley makes any team look bad just by his actions. These are my opinions, and you have yours, we’re all supposed to be friends here. So what if I don’t like him? Once he proves he can produce for the team, I’ll eat my words.

Fair enough, I’m not jumping on your case because hes not your favorite player. I’m jumping on your case because you can’t see how ridiculous this umpire situation is. Like him or not, its not fair. I also think you are absolutely wrong in saying he has a “terrible attitude”. Thats not what his teammates have said. Maybe you should get to know more about Bradley and the specific situations involving him and his “terrible attitude” — you might reconsider your hasty judgment.

I actually can,

I’ve been telling people a few times that yes, they were indeed bad strike calls! I even said so in my first post. But I guess what you guys are helping me realize, is how I should have phrased it the first time… I think it’s the manager’s/coaches’ job to get on the umps when their strike zone is the size of a 747 and moving every pitch. Not the players. Any player should have been pissed about it but most would say a few things and then get on with the game.

Thats reasonable.

I could be wrong about Bradley — but its early and I think the guy deserves an honest shot at being a well liked member of the team.

I agree with you, at least partly

Yes they were bad calls (which I had said in my first post) but I think it’s better left to the Lou or the coaches to take on the umps; man up and get on with the game, like the other players on the field. I understand players argue calls sometimes but Bradley was losing his mind out there. Which he is well known for doing.

by Fonzie2178 on Apr 19, 2009 4:20 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Again

Its comments like this that give credence to all the lazy sports writers that say Bradley is a “cancer” on a team. Hes not crazy and hes not losing his mind. In certain situations during his career, he has gotten upset and yes, made what one could call a scene. But its not as though he is begging for opportunities to fly off the handle. Some players don’t argue balls and strikes, and some players do. With Bradley, I think there is solid evidence to prove that he seriously knows the diff, so I say its justified — spirited? Yes, he is not D-Lee.

Absolutely

You may hold me to the position that we should support players.

We should wish for players to get better if they are doing badly. We should want them to improve. And if they simply cannot improve or if there is a better option, we move on.

We should NOT want them to fail to validate our opinions that they should not have been signed.

I get frustration. I do. But I am so sick and tired of people celebrating every error by Theriot because they wanted Tejada; or every blown save by Gregg because they love Kerry or every issue with Bradley because they didn’t want him signed.

That is no longer a valid response. They are Cubs.

These quad injuries happen all the time...

…..we should all be happy that this isn’t a knee injury or anything broken. He didn’t even need to go on the DL, PLUS, the team has done adequately without him.

And PLEASE don’t use his slow start as a way to slam him. The guy is seeing the plate pretty well now, even though he’s not gotten on base. All it will take is a 3-4 game / a couple hits here and there and he’ll have an average that looks more like his usual.

He has every right to appeal this suspension if he feels he is right, and I think he’s right too. I don’t understand why people are questioning his decision to appeal. Part of me thinks that this is an attempt, by Milton-haters (start a club whydon’tcha) to find another way to utter the word “I told you so.”

If this was a highly-touted rookie, I might be worried. But Bradley has a track record that says he’s going to hit. Unfortunately, that same track record also says he’ll get injured, but he just needs to relax and play. He’ll be fine.

A pissed off Bradley shall be a highly productive Bradley

The suspension will prove to be a gift from MLB. Bradley plays exceptional when he has a chip on his shoulder. I do not agree with his selfish decision to appeal the suspension when he is already on the shelf to begin with, and neither does Lou if I’m correct in reading between the lines.

Show me a time when MLB has overturned a suspension

At most, MLB sometimes shaves a game from a player suspension. But in this case I doubt they will do that given…

A. Bradley’s hat did come in contact with the umpire, and the rules expressly state that is a no-no.

B. Bradley’s infamous history of run-ins.

by BLou on Apr 20, 2009 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right, but the outcome isn't the point.

Bradley probably feels a need to put up a fight because he knows this won’t be his first run-in with the umps this year. He likely wants to convey a message that he – and the Cubs – aren’t just going to roll over when umps like Vanover pull their crybaby crap.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

He's a guy that likes to have his side heard.

Why close him off and anger him? Mike needs to decide if Bradley is a good player who he wants pacified and producing or if he wants him pissed at the world.

I want pacified with a ridiculous OBP.

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

Not sure what you are stating has anything to do with what I wrote.

A. Correct, but a very minor infraction. Appeal, have it reduced to 1 game and make certain all know it was minor. Bradley is pleased to get himself heard and the judgement reduced. Happy Gameboard.

B. Documents this was minimal and unintentional. Happy Gameboard.

You would prefer the club tell him to sit down and shut up, piss him off, and have him pout for the next few months?

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

seems to think that a pissed-off Gameboard is a productive Gameboard.

Bradley is GUILTY by definition of the rule that thou shalt not come in contact with an umpire

His hat touched the ump. It’s right there in black and white, hence why he is being suspended. There is no challenge to the touching of the hat because the evidence is clear. So what exactly then is he appealing???? Next time he touches an umpire with his person or body of clothing he is going to be in equal amount of shit for being a repeat offender. Appealing the suspension doesn’t serve a purpose.

Bradley seems to like having

his side of the conversation heard. Let the man speak, let Uncle Bud reduce it to 1 game and all walk away happy having spoken their peace.

Why would you praise the signing and then want to piss off the guy who failed anger management class?

if this was still new to me, i wouldn't understand

by N Oakley on Apr 20, 2009 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

sure it does

it tells the umps that the Cubs won’t be pushed around, and that when the umps make bad calls, they’re going to get flack for it.

Also, appealing the suspension will get it reduced.

Also, he is right in PRINCIPLE. The calls were terrible.

Lousy strike calls doesn't condone bumping an umpire

The “crime” of bumping an umpire with bill of the cap is right there on the videotape. How in God’s green earth do you appeal the crime when the evidence is plainly there? A lousy strike call by the umpire is not justification for the crime. Hence why Bradley is doubtful to get out of this suspension (or have it reduced). Appeal of the suspension will stir up the umpires too. If you think Bradley was screwed over by the ball and strike call, just wait until he returns. These umpire assholes have LONG memories and many love metering out vendettas.

"CRIME"?

I don’t think that word means what you think it does.

You still haven’t answered the question of why you think Lou disapproves of Bradley’s appeal.

Also, intent matters. It’ll be interesting to revisit this topic if and when the suspension is reduced.

Every player has a right to an appeal.

Whether or not the suspension is warranted (I believe on is on the letter of the rule), has nothing to do with whether or not Bradley can appeal.

Bradley wants to appeal. His Team President, GM, and Manager understand that telling Bradley to serve and not appear will hinder their relationship with their player and his performance may suffer.

You’re off your nut on this one.

He is appealing the fact that he was given a two game suspension...

for incidental contact with the umpire. Bradley is well within his rights to do this, and the suspension will likely be reduced to one game. Enough said.

Damn, I clicked hoping to see

the original Milton in all his photoshopped glory.

Bradley argued balls and strikes, therefore was tossed. The frikkin hats touched, stupid, but mandatory suspension. Refrain from judging Bradley until he actually does something.

GOTTA AGREE

With Mr. Worf…..Bradley is a Cub now…Not on any other team…..Forget the past please . It was a bad call …..Let"s get behind this guy……We are only one week into the season and fans are already trying to get his neck in a noose…….

Milton?

He doesn’t look like the selfish, arguing type. More like the “where’s my paycheck” and “I’m gonna burn this place to the ground” type, or “where’s my stapler” type.

I could be wrong.

Yeahhhh...I'm gonna have to go ahead and throw you out of the ballgame. You'll be getting a suspension, too. Thanks.
