Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Kudos to SI for thinking we can take Philly in the NLDS, but losing to the Mets in the NLCS;whom SI has winning it all over LAA.

Besides Santana, I think we have the edge in pitching. In any case, thatd be a hell of a series and one which Im sure MLB execs would be drooling over.

Cubs Win Playoff Series, But...

I wouldn’t want them to lose to the Mets in the NLCS. Beating the Phillies in the NLDS would be a step in the right direction in getting over our postseason woes.

as long as the NLCS

isn’t lost after being only five outs away.

I still have the 2004 SI cover

That reads “Hell Freezes over: Cubs win world series”. It is framed in my basement.

by gocubsgo22 on Apr 2, 2009 9:02 AM CDT reply actions

I have that around somewhere, too.

That’s the most important question. Are the Cubs on the cover? If we can keep them off the cover till AFTER we win the World Series, we’ll be just fine.

Another instance

Of people predicting the Cubs to win it all, and they don’t make the playoffs. I can think of 2004, and 2006 off the top of my head.

2006? Seriously?

Who predicted the Cubs to win it all that year? (Not even me, I don’t think.)

I don't know how or why I remember this...

…but I have a faint recollection of Tony Gwynn predicting the Cubs would win it all in ’06. I think he convinced himself that Prior and Wood would return to form.

Wow.

That shows Gwynn as being dumber than Joe Morgan.

1991

After the Cubs got Danny Jackson, Dave Smith, and George Bell, there were many who thought the Cubs were going to win the World Series in 1991. At the beginning of 1991, who thought the Twins would beat the Braves in the World Series?

That team was a closer away from winning it all.

We simply could not get three outs in the ninth that year, period. Every other piece was in place, even Sutcliffe got healthy down the stretch that year for one last run with the team, as I recall. I think that was the year that the Cubs blew two games in the ninth inning in less than a week in which Andre Dawson hit would-be game-winning grand slams. Paul Assenmacher was a good setup man, but he could not close, and Dave Smith was washed up after being a very good closer in Houston.

predictions now are worthless, All Star Break is a better thought

To me the baseball season is about first seeing what you have in the first 45 days, then the adjustments for the next 45 days. The objective at the ASB is to be in the race.

The Cubs by all accounts should win their division. I would not discount the Cardinals out for they one of the best managers in the game, the best hitter period and some other elements. Winning in the playoffs will be determined if/when the Cubs add one more difference maker. RedSox needed to acquire Schilling to get over the top…Cubs will need to do the same.

LOL

I think he meant JAMES Shields. At least, I hope so.

In all fairness, I can't find much to disagree with there.

All your picks are more or less in line with what Baseball Prospectus is predicting, give or take a win or two here and there. (That’s not to say I’m relying solely on BP, but it appears to be a good guideline.)

For instance, initially, I scoffed at the idea of the D’Backs taking the Wild Card over the Phillies. But, sure enough, BP has the D’Backs winning one more game than the Phils. And I actually could see the Phils suffering some fall back after winning their championship. Utley and Hamels have already had some injury problems, and it’s hard to believe Lidge will be Mr. Perfect two seasons in a row. I also think Ibanez is going to hurt them (defensively) in left field.

Based on their previous "expertise" on the subject....

I would rather SI predict the Cubs miss the playoffs altogether. IIRC, I think they predicted Detroit would beat the Cubs in the World Series last year. Boy, they nailed that one.

It was predicted that the NY Mets

were going to win the World Series last year when they got Johan. They had all but won the World Series in their predictions. They didn’t even make the playoffs. I don’t even look at predictions from SI or BP. They’re never right.

in a 2004 Playboy

for a baseball preview the writer predicted the world series between the Cubs and Red Sox, with the Cubs winning it all. Guess they were half right… and yes I read the articles, i believe it had a great short story by Chuck Palahniuk.

Yeah, yeah, yeah...

…let’s cut to the chase. Who was the centerfold?
