This Is The Rain That Never Ends: Cubs vs. Reds, Tuesday 4/21, 7:05 CT

Here is the Chicago area weather radar, for your information and amusement. Let's hope it has less green on it later this evening.

Tonight is Carlos Zambrano no-hitter statue giveaway night. Check out this eBay auction for the statues, posted many hours before the gates even opened.

Z isn't pitching tonight, but he's the subject of another item here, too. Remember the story that Z was supposed to have LASIK eye surgery? (I don't think he ever did.) Maybe he shouldn't -- Braves catcher Brian McCann, who had LASIK a couple of years ago, is having trouble with his vision. In fairness, I myself had LASIK in 1998 and have not had any problems with vision; I think Greg Maddux had this surgery too. They do tell you when you have it, that in about 1-2% of cases there can be blurred vision problems, especially at night, which would definitely affect a baseball player with bright stadium lights on.

Milton Bradley is supposed to return to the lineup tonight; with the cold, wet weather, who knows if that will still be the case. That article has some nice things to say about Micah Hoffpauir:
Manager Lou Piniella even batted Hoffpauir against lefties and admits "we like Micah."

"He can play both corner outfields and first base," Piniella said. "He gives us a good bat coming off the bench and at the same time he's got some power."

Personally, I have yet to be totally convinced he can handle the outfield. He hasn't embarrassed himself so far.

Today's Starting Pitchers
Rich Harden
Rich Harden
Cubs
vs. Micah Owings
Micah Owings
Reds
0-1 W-L 0-1
5.00 ERA 7.20
18 SO 2
6 BB 2
2 HR 2
vs. Cin -- vs. Cubs

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Rich Harden 0-1 2 2 0 0 0 0 9.0 8 6 5 2 6 18 5.00 1.56

W-L G GS CG SHO SV BS IP H R ER HR BB K ERA WHIP
2009 - Micah Owings 0-1 4 1 0 0 0 0 5.0 5 4 4 2 2 2 7.20 1.40

Why the Reds don't try Micah Owings as a fulltime hitter is beyond me. He seems much better at hitting than pitching. He has a 5.01 career ERA in 262 innings with 36 homers allowed. As a hitter he's .322/.357/.562 (.919 OPS) in 121 at-bats with 12 doubles and 5 homers -- that would translate into a 30-homer season in 600 AB. He's 8-for-24 lifetime as a PH with 3 doubles, 1 HR and 3 walks -- that's better than his fellow Micah, Hoffpauir.

So tonight, let's hope the Cubs can hit him -- no current Cub has more than one hit off him -- and keep him from hitting.

The only Red who has more than 3 career AB against Rich Harden is Laynce Nix, who faced him in the AL -- 3-for-17. Overall Rich is 2-0, 2.92 in his only two starts vs. the Reds.

Today's game is on WGN-TV, so available to everyone with cable, and also on FSN Ohio. For other games see the MLB.com Mediacenter.

I now look forward to Harden's starts for 2 reasons:

1) He’s nasty on the mount
2) That picture gets better every time

Guess you could look at it one or two ways...

1. Good game to start him because the bullpen is rested after the off day yesterday.
2. Not a good idea to start him as the weather will be a factor, and the bullpen has a greater possiblity to get taxed going into a stretch of 20 games in 20 days.

We shall see…

Harden likes to pitch in cool weather - reminds him of home.

He’s said this on at least a couple occasions.

Per Gordo, Bradley is NOT playing tonight.

He gives the lineup as:

sori, fuky (8), lee, hoff (9), rami, font, soto, riot, harden.

And I REALLY wish he’d stop calling Kosuke “fuky.”

SWL: why would you have to reherse anything?

great art work on the 1000, though that is known as a “K”, as in $10K = $10,000.

But we’ll take a K (or two) with a game winning homer like he had on Saturday, any time!

Slightly OT: Bleacher Ivy

This has nothing to do with the game but I’ve been curious about it so I figured someone else must be too. I thought I remember the plans for the bleacher renovations involving the team growing ivy on the new brick exterior walls. I even remember some shoots springing up a while back behind a pretty pathetic steel cable barrier.

When I was there for Opening Day along the Waveland side the little trench of dirt was totally obliterated with trash and I would think combining the inherent nature of some of the visitors to Wrigley it would be very difficult to actually coax anything to grow out of there.

Does anyone know what I’m talking about or am I crazy? Also, if I’m not…are they still trying to grow the new ivy?

by CubFan81 on Apr 21, 2009 5:33 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

Yeah

They did try to grow ivy on the new exterior brick wall, however, is hardly grew at all from a combination of little sunlight and getting messed up by the bleacher line as well as people coming to steal some. Accordingly, they put the plan on hold, saying they may revisit it as some point in the future if I remember correctly. I personally think it will never be revisited.

Mine goes to 11

by Mutz on Apr 21, 2009 5:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I remember that too.

A couple years ago I took a picture of my husband standing by it thinking that it would be cool to show people someday when it was all covered with ivy how we were there way back when it was first planted. We noticed it was gone last year and figured that maybe people were taking it as "souvenirs"so they couldn’t get it to grow.

I'm kinda hoping

Z doesn’t have the LASIK. It is more prone to complications than PRK. LASIK actually uses a blade in the surgery and has a longer recovery time and infection chance is greater. If he can—and he should be able to if I was able to get it through the military—he should opt of PRK. Its purely laser surgery—about 5-10 seconds on each eye and should be fine within the regular pitching rotation. I loved my surgery—no more worry about contact gunk. This is a completely unsponsored PSA for PRK laser surgery. And I agree, the team absolutely must get a better picture for Harden. He looks physically inept in that picture.

Time is an illusion--lunch time doubly so.

by snowyman28 on Apr 21, 2009 5:49 PM CDT reply actions   1 recs

As a Reds fan I think the Reds should allow Owings to pitch

his ERA in inflated by last season when he was pitching with a sore shoulder. Plus his offensive numbers may be a product of a small sample size. Who knows if it transfers to 600 at bats in a season. He will never be an ace, but he can be a solid mid rotation guy, who can put up league average numbers. Lets face it there is a premium placed on league average pitchers.

Look, it's just that guy are going to get hurt...

you can’t predict who and when or how, and baseball games get played all the time in cold weather. It’s not ideal, but it happens very frequently. Some of the most important games every year are played in cold weather (playoff games). I could understand make earlier substitutions to get your stars out of the game a bit earlier during really cold weather, but rearranging your lineup with bench players just because of cold is borderline idiocy.

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

Owings

He certainly got off to a nice start in his career, pitching over 150 innings in 2007 with a 4.30 ERA. At that time people really expected him to be a major part of the Dbacks rotation, along with Webb and that was a great rookie season for any starter. I imagine the Reds will give him every opportunity in the world to remain a starter but its entirely possible that if he does not progress, everyone involved may find it best to convert him into a position player.

A sidenote on Owings is that he was initially drafted by the Cubs in the 19th round of the 2004 draft. In that same draft they grabbed Eric Patterson and hoped that by paying them both hefty sums of money that they could steal two guys who fell in the draft because of questions of signability. Patterson was signed but not Owings, who would be drafted the next year in the 3rd round by the Dbacks. Colorado drafted him out of HS, in the 2nd round of the 2002 draft.

I never even noticed what was written on the fabric.

How could anyone?

Badgers? BADGERS?

We don’t need no stinking badgers!

As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

but I’ll be busy in the morning.

I'm gonna eat crow now

I went on the record here saying I liked Judd Sirott, and suggested that the haters gave him a chance.

Oh boy, was I wrong. He’s interviewing A-Ram right now, and he sounds like he belongs on the low-end of the dial in Maquoketa, IA, doing a bad crop report. Not to mention his constant gaffes during the scoreboard checks and his call.

So, I fullheartedly take back anything good that I might’ve said about him, and join the legions of his detractors.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Are you in Maquoketa for real?

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Boy, I miss that lovely area

I lived in Dubuque for 4 years, but my roommate is from Maquoketa and I spent a summer living at his folks’ because we lost our apartment.

No ill wishes on Maquoketa or Iowa at all. It was the first really small town I could think of.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

Did you ever go

eat at the catfish farm at Bluff Lake?

You better believe it

I played in a bar band and we “toured” all those dinky towns and visited every single attraction along the way.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
