Just heard...

the same thing on WGN…

Did someone get the axe?

- Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
- Germans?
- Forget it, he's rolling.

if cotts is safe

does patton get sent back to the rockies?

by doofus cubs guy on Apr 22, 2009 4:40 PM CDT reply actions

patton won't go back to the rockies

padres, natinals, a’s, pirates, and others would snag him off of waivers first.

Haha This is kinda a joke

How the heck does Cotts keep his job? It really pisses me off to read that he gets to keep his job. I understand that Vizcaino isn’t anything special, but come on at least he gets guys outs and throws a strike every once in a while.

as a lefthander myself all I can say is

sometimes its good to be lefthanded – even if you’re bad

by doofus cubs guy on Apr 22, 2009 4:50 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm also a lefty

I promise you I can throw a ball for a strike at 60 feet 6 inches. It might go 60 MPH and get hit hard, but it will be a strike

Agreed

So far, Vizcaino has thrown 3.2 innings, with a 0.00 ERA, and a .545 WHIP. I know that his career numbers show he will regress from those numbers, but as of right now, how has Vizcaino shown he’s the guy deserving of being DFA’d? If anyone should be off this team, it should be Cotts, with Waddell called up. But I’m not convinced any changes need to be made yet, as it is still very early in the season.

I would think

Patton would be safe. If Cotts is safe as well, then Luis is the odd man out.

by AGC on Apr 22, 2009 4:44 PM CDT reply actions

I don't get it.

Samardzija was pitching well in Iowa. Why stunt his growth as a starter to drag him back into the bullpen, where he’s not really needed right now. I know the pen has been shaky here and there, but it’s still early.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

Tweet from Gordo
Look for Vizcaino to be odd man out on Samardzija move. Likely DFA.

Really too bad. like I said he might not be good, but he isn’t as bad as Cotts

Well, I guess I still count myself among the few who think Cotts can right the ship.

But that is pretty cold – seeing as how Vizcaino closed out a win just yesterday and hasn’t pitched much otherwise.

At this point the ship doesn't need to be righted

It needs to be pulled out of the water because it sunk.

How?

How does Cotts keep his job? I’m sure Vizcaino could start throwing lefty and walk batters just as well.

Last year everyone thought Marmol was over after a couple bad games. He is back now. Neil Cotts is going through a rough spot right now, but we know that he can pitch well and will pitch well again. He just needs a good inning to get any doubts out of his mind. I am not going to praise or damn someone because of a couple of good or bad games. I want to look at the body of work.

Im glad

Cotts gets to prove himself, he’s got a great arm. He just needs to trust that the defense will help him out if he throws strikes and lets them hit the ball.

by tizzle on Apr 22, 2009 5:16 PM CDT reply actions

I mean

If every player deserves more than 12 games to prove themselves, why is Cotts the only guy who isnt allowed that.

by tizzle on Apr 22, 2009 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

its not just 12 games

and what has shown you that he has a “great arm”?

by dmlichte on Apr 22, 2009 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions

Ummm...

He has good speed coming from the left side, and if he would stop trying to hit the corners and allow the batter to hit the ball, I think he would get better results.

by tizzle on Apr 22, 2009 6:19 PM CDT up reply actions

his stuff

He’s got a 90MPH fastball and a decent change and curve. I’m not saying he has bad stuff but I’ve never heard his stuff referred to as “Great”

by dmlichte on Apr 22, 2009 7:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Vizcaino getting cut?

WTF? This would be a stupid, stupid move. He’s been great so far this season. Granted, small sample size. But, great. Meanwhile, Cotts has given up more baserunners than he has recorded outs. Yet he’s safe? This will be an awful move if true.

by kanderber on Apr 22, 2009 6:46 PM CDT reply actions

They wanna keep a lefty in the pen.

Despite the fact that the Angels won the World Series without a lefty on the damn roster.

rather keep Cotts than Vizcaino.

At work today at Principal Park...

I was scanning tickets at the entrance that’s right by the locker room. Right when the game started Samardzija came out of the locker room with all of his equipment and a mountain of shoe boxes and he got in his car and drove away. I was wondering if maybe he had gotten called up…I guess I was right. He did seem really happy.

I saw one report that thought

Marshall might move back to the pen with Shark starting and Vizcaino getting the axe. I don’t like Vizcaino getting released or Marshall moving to the pen so I hope this was pure speculation. I know Marshall was really good in the swing man role last year but I think he has earned the 5th starter spot and shouldn’t be moved back to the pen just because Cotts can’t throw a strike to save his life right now.

There is a frustrating situation developing here

This team “cut salary” this offseason in order to meet some budget. Yet Chad Gaudin was released for 1.6 mil and if Vizcaino is cut, that is 4 more million. 5.6 million for 3 innings?

Mark DeRosa’s salary this season? 5.5 mil.

A few things

First off, the Cubs had to take Vizcaino’s contract from the Rockies in order to get them to take Marquis. Gaudin certainly could have been non-tendered… I don’t know if anyone envisioned him falling apart to the extend that he did.

by dmlichte on Apr 23, 2009 1:22 AM CDT reply actions

Cotts is a left-hander, hence why he has job security

Luis Vizcaino is not good. Let’s face it, the only reason he is on the roster is because he was an expensive party gift from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for them taking on the contract of Jason Marquis. Piniella and Rothschild have never had faith in Vizcaino, and I can’t say as though I blame them.

More salary gulping by the Cubs. I guess it is the thing you have to do sometimes. They took a flyer on Chad Gaudin in the deal to acquire Rich Harden, and it didn’t work out. They had to take on Vizcaino in order to move Marquis, and not too surprisingly they got crap for their $4 million side of things.
