the new order
i agree with fellow cubs fans that the new lineup is good. But as I listened to the game anxiously tonight in the ninth I couldnt help but think that if Alfonso was leading of instead of theriot, we would have had gathright on with alfonso at the plate a potential game winning home run again like in brewers country or even another double would have gotten the tying run. I love the cubs but little changes like that can really cost the team the game. Hopefully the hitters come out tommorow on fox LETS GO CUBBIES

Welcome to BCB! I see you’re new. Hope you enjoy the forum. We’ve already talked about the new lineup in a post by SammySosa (not the real one), and another one by drew. Sometimes it’s good to check first if the topic has been talked about at all, but no worries. Even so, I’m glad to see you on BCB, you came at a good time—big rivalry weekend!

Thanks for welcoming me in. I am new to the site and didn’t notice the previous posts about this topic. I will be sure to check next time and GO CUBBIES

This is why changing the batting order may not bring the desired resullts you
hope for. The player still have to hit no matter where they are in the lineup. The actual batting order does not hve as much effect on the team as some people think. Tonights game showed why that is true.

yes but
I think Piniella is exerting manager control and also looking at the obvious. To me Soriano is the best suited to bat 3rd and if Theriot and Fukudome are the best OBP, then they are on base with our best power hitter.
When/if Bradley and Ramirez return it will be interesting but I could see Ramirez 4th, Bradley 5th and Lee 6th with Fontenot and Soto.
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
The leadoff hitter
is only guaranteed to lead off one inning, the 1st. After that, it’s a crapshoot. Tonight, maybe it didn’t work out well, but that’s not to say it won’t tomorrow. Personally, I agree, and think that too much emphasis is put on lineup order. The 9 guys have to hit wherever they are!

make it green
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Exactly.
Further, Soriano had a .406 OBA in the leadoff spot over the first 14 games. That’s pretty good — the 9 walks he drew show that his approach this year is different, and working.
Why Lou chose to screw with that is beyond me.
But I agree with ambrosiadreams above. Far too much time is spent here discussing various lineup choices.

Lou likes to tinker...
Patience is not one of his attributes. The team had struggled to score runs for a couple of games, and a few guys (Lee, Fontenot, Soto, Bradley) were really struggling in the first few weeks. So Piniella made changes.
Don’t worry – Piniella will almost certainly change the lineup again in a few days, if not today.

Right, but the problem is....
… unlike last year, he doesn’t have the versatile players who can allow him to tinker.

Doesn't matter what the order is...
WHOEVER is up needs to hit with runners on base.
Have’t had a chance to look closely, but seems to me the Cubs are walking less and striking out more than last year….anybody look at those numbers closely?
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
The Cubs have drawn 67 walks.
That ranks 4th in the league. Last year they led the league, but they’re only 8 walks out of being 2nd.
They have struck out 105 times. That ranks 11th. Last year they ranked 6th in most K’s by batters. So they’re actually doing better so far in batter strikeouts.

The walk rate is slightly up, and the K rate is slightly down...
Last year, the team averaged 3.95 BB and 7.36 K per game. This year, we’re averaging 4.47 BB and 7 K per game. The number of AB per game is roughly equivalent (39.67 AB per game this year versus 39.65 AB per game last year).
So in fact, we’re actually doing a bit better, although the differences are not remotely significant yet. A large part of that is that Soriano is walking more, Fontenot has walked a bit more than DeRosa, and Bradley walks a LOT.
Hmmm
I thought this post was going to be about that band that came after Joy Division.

I’ll explain more later.
I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.
wait
what have I gotten myself into?
