Aw, crap.

Now how are we going to get Jim Edmonds back?

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

What does this have to do with Edmonds?

Gathright can still be cut for Edmonds.

that would be awesome

I think Gath could be cut for a pogo stick

and it would improve the team

If it was a pink pogo stick

then the youngest bullpen pitcher would have to use it to bounce down to the ‘pen. I’m in favor of this trade.

Not sure if Edmonds would be psyched about...

taking a job as a pinch hitter and defensive sub. Once Bradley returns (at least until/if he gets hurt again), Edmonds is limited to a very marginal role.

Further, for all your discussion about Hoffpauir’s unproven pinch-hitting skills, are you confident that Edmonds would do better in the role? He’d be an upgrade over Gathright has given us, but who’s to say that (a) he will still be productive or (b) that he is capable of being a pinch hitter.

If you anticipate that Bradley will miss 60+ games the rest of the way (which is not unreasonable) AND if you assume you can get Edmonds for very cheap (which might be unreasonable) AND Edmonds is willing to be predominantly a pinch hitter and defensive sub (may or may not be unreasonable), then I’d be all for it. But there are a few hurdles to clear in that hypothetical.

by SouthernCub on Apr 28, 2009 8:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I'd think Edmonds....

… would take a backup role, if he wants to play, rather than continue to sit home. And the longer the season goes, the cheaper he likely gets.

"You can observe a lot just by watching." ~ Yogi Berra

by Al Yellon on Apr 28, 2009 8:54 AM CDT up reply actions

That's certainly possible, but it is not a given...

That’s why I mentioned it. He may prefer taking a backup role to not playing. But it may alternatively be the case that he’s been waiting in hopes of an everyday job and has little-to-no interest in sitting on the bench.

Of course, you and I know nothing about what Edmonds wants to do. I was just mentioning the possibility as something that may be an issue.

by SouthernCub on Apr 28, 2009 9:04 AM CDT up reply actions

does it really matter?

we’re not seriously considering giving him the starting centerfield spot. So either he’ll come as a backup/bench player, or he’s not interested. Bradley coming back to play doesn’t change this.

Thank you. My point exactly.

It did occur to me yesterday, however, that this could work out just as I’d hoped during the off-season. All apologies to the League of Micah Hoffpauir Supporters, but what if the Cubs re-signed Edmonds and sent Micah back to Triple A? (He has two options remaining.)

Then Edmonds could serve as the veteran LH PH, maybe backup first base occasionally and, if he must, play some token outfield. I know that would suck for Micah, but he could still come back up if DLee needs to take a DL stint at some point.

I know I’m one of the few people around here who see Joey Gathright has having some value, so, yes, he could stick around as a defensive replacement.

I’m not exactly sure which of our outfielders you think Edmonds would be a good defensive substitute for.

Bradley needs another week

If you’ve ever had a groin injury, they lurk around but a bad move can make it scream. I think we’ll see this on again off again until he stays off it for more than a few days.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).

you can only assume

without being able to actually diagnose his injury. All we have to go on is speculation as to how bad it is.

If he comes back tonight

and keeps up that pace for the rest of the season, then he’ll play 144 games this season! It must be! 1 game’s trend defines a whole season!

by DGU on Apr 28, 2009 2:01 PM CDT reply actions

Does Bradley's contract come into play here?

I was wondering why no DL, and why Lou mentioned he was talking to him everyday. I know the contract is basically for two years, and the Cubs can bail on the third year. But, I wonder if Bradley is making himself available for pinch hitting duty to keep up the games played/available if there is a clause in there that allows the Cubs to void the contract for not being ready to play a certain number of games?

by Nibbles on Apr 28, 2009 2:23 PM CDT reply actions

I think it was just PR

They didn’t want the headline “Bradley DL’d Already”

Derrek Lee is good.

by DGU on Apr 28, 2009 2:56 PM CDT up reply actions

The third year of his deal is related to his playing time in year 1...

I can’t remember if it’s games played or AB, but there is a clause that voids the third year if he doesn’t reach a certain threshold. I’m not sure that’s the reason for the no DL stint (I’m guessing everyone was just being optimistic that he’d be back sooner).

by SouthernCub on Apr 29, 2009 9:28 AM CDT up reply actions

For some different perspective on this

Will Carroll recently praised the Cubs’ handling of Bradley, Lee, and Ramirez, saying we’d come out ahead by playing shorthanded.

They should be fine and actually come out ahead by not panicking and losing players to unnecessary DL days. More teams should take note.

Derrek Lee is good.

by DGU on Apr 28, 2009 2:58 PM CDT reply actions

That link wasn't very helpful...

I’d be interested to hear Carroll’s logic as to why not DLing Bradley was a good idea, since he was clearly useless for the two weeks following the injury (despite standing in the field once in that span). I think the Cubs might have been better off DLing Bradley and having a functional body for those two weeks.

I would agree about Ramirez and Lee though, assuming they’re back in the lineup relatively quickly. I don’t think you should DL guys who really are day-to-day, because you could wind up losing 10 days of the good player for 15 days of a minor leaguer. The trick, of course, is figuring out which guys are going to need that full two weeks.

by SouthernCub on Apr 29, 2009 9:32 AM CDT up reply actions

addendum...

the link only talked about Cy Youngs and Albert Pujols. that’s what I meant by not very helpful.

If you're not a subscriber

you won’t get the part on the Cubs. But I checked the link and it’s there. The quote above is accurate.

by DGU on Apr 29, 2009 12:17 PM CDT up reply actions

I was asking for more information...

not questioning the accuracy of the quote. Just wanted more context as to why he thinks not DLing Bradley makes sense, since Bradley was basically out for 2 weeks.

by SouthernCub on Apr 29, 2009 12:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I think Jimmy Ballgame said at his last Fan Club meeting we had ..

.. that’s he’s going to sleep in with his nubile Mrs. Edmonds, enjoy chopping greens in the back of the store and challenging his MLB buddies in town to spirited games of MLB 2K8 rather than take a back up job on the Cubs ..

.. the muffins, Davo, got pretty sorry after that and you could hear the crickets …

Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!

Bradley goes

2-4 with a walk and at least one run scored.

Yep.

Not the 4-4 with a three-run bomb I’d offered a body part for, but a nice start back. He made a couple slightly awkward catches in right, but he got to the ball and made the plays nonetheless.
