Jake Fox: Two more HRs tonight

Jake Fox hit two more HRs tonight to bring his total to 11.

http://iowa.cubs.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=t451&t=g_box&gid=2009_04_27_iowaaa_nasaaa_1

Say what you will, but this is a great story for now.  It would be a huge step back defensively but if Lee hits the DL, we don't really have a choice but to play Hoffpauir at 1B and maybe give Fox some ABs in RF.  He's smashing he ball right now and the Cubs are dinged up with no offense.

Instead of playing armchair manager

Can we discuss why all of the sudden the Cubs have stopped being patient at the plate? We’re not scoring runs and coincidentally we also aren’t taking walks. Coincidence?

by ak123 on Apr 28, 2009 12:10 AM CDT reply actions

You mean the team

that is third in walks in the NL right now? And the team that had three walks Sunday?

Maybe the reasons they couldn’t score tonight are called “Dan Haren” and “too many key players not playing.”

by Not Bruce Froemming on Apr 28, 2009 12:56 AM CDT up reply actions

Three walks is not a lot of walks...

and that’s the most we’ve had in the last several games: 0, 2, 2, 2, 3, 0 in the last six games respectively, during which time we’re 1-5. That 3-walk game is the only game on the list that we’ve won. So the previous poster had a legitimate discussion point that didn’t need to be poo-pooed so quickly.

I do agree that some of the explanation is that Bradley has been out for several games. But Lee and Ramirez played in most of the games in this stretch, so it’s not simply “Dan Haren” and “too many key players not playing.” It might simply be “rough stretch,” “small sample size,” and “Bradley has been out,” but to dismiss it based on Sunday’s game is too simplistic.

by SouthernCub on Apr 28, 2009 7:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Thank you

For agreeing. We need to be more patient. I mean look at the game against Milkwaukee when Johnson stole the grand slam. If we weren’t patient we might have loss (and had Johnson not come into the game we probably would have been playing extra innings).

by ak123 on Apr 28, 2009 8:23 AM CDT up reply actions

+4

the games we have lost, we seem to be rushing at the plate. not sure if that is cuz of the different people in the line up,or cuz everyone is trying and pressing to make something happen.

now regarding Fox, who has he hit the HRs off of? I am jsut curious the caliber of pitching he is hitting.

no to play ameteur shrink

but it may be nothing more than the players left pressing and trying to do too much. They know some of their big guns are out and everyone’s trying to make up for it.

based on their overall walk standing. But thanks for playing.

by Not Bruce Froemming on Apr 28, 2009 11:52 AM CDT up reply actions

Hi this is 2009 not 2008

And for most of last week they were not taking walks.

Look at pitch counts from opposing pitchers. Not only were we not taking walks, we were taking hacks early.

So dismiss this all you want but the fact is, few walks = few wins.

Thanks for playing Dusty.

It's not like

Haren was throwing balls to walk on. Harang wasn’t throwing many balls either, nor was Cueto.

You have to adapt your batting approach to what you’re getting from the pitcher. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to get walks; I agree — they’re pressing at the plate.

Only if Lee goes on the DL.

Fox is basically a DH. He’s a poor man’s Dave Kingman in the field. And for those of you who never saw Kingman play, Kingman was one of the worst fielders in Cubs history.

But he could mash a baseball

How could anyone ever forget the ball he hit half way down Kenmore. He certainly was not a good outfielder and he never was going to hit for a high average but he could hit the long ball.

by Crazy Uncle Lou on Apr 29, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

So basically,

If Lee goes to the DL, Hoff gets promoted to “D-Lee”, and Fox gets promoted to “Hoff”, the roster spot formerly known as “Daryle Ward”.

As long as Hoff stays at 1B and Fox stays put in his Hoff/Ward bench bat position, it seems like a decent short-term fix.

Things were getting a little crazy there for a while. “Has anyone ever caught before at any level? How about second base?” Which reminds me, how did we go from 7 second basemen on the 25-man roster to 1 and a half?

It reminds me of when Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz was so fed up with his punter that he had everyone on his entire roster who ever punted in highschool out on the field at halftime “trying out” for the position for the second half.

Yeah, that I could live with...

…though I assume we’d have the same concern about Fox in the PH role that we had/have with Hoffpauir – namely, that he’s an inexperienced ML player being asked to take patient ABs at key points in important games.

Although, like Hoff,

Fox has done plenty of DHing in the minors, which I would think helps prepare a player for PH duties. Not exactly the same, but still sitting on your butt for prolonged periods of time before you make a plate appearance.

DH'ing is nothing like PH'ing.

As a DH, you hit four or five times a game just like the fielders. You can get into the rhythm of the game, maybe face the same pitcher three times. You know exactly when your turn at bat is.

As a PH, you get one shot, and don’t necessarily get a lot of warning when you’re going to hit.

Two very different things IMO.

by Al Yellon on Apr 28, 2009 4:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Thanks for the primer on what a DH is

I’m quite aware that a DH bats several times a game, often seeing the same pitcher several times. I also realize that sitting for innings at a time, and not playing the field holds similarities to pinch hitting. That’s why some players hate dh’ing, because they don’t feel into the game.

Sorry, I guess I'm just more conservative...

…but I’m not going to put a defensive liability on the field and gamble that his unproven ML bat will generate enough offense to offset the runs lost on defense. Again, I’m happy for Jake and wish the Cubs could do something with him, but I’m afraid the only something that comes to mind is package him in a trade to an AL team.

Why is Fox playing 1B for Iowa?

Despite the current Lee/Hoff worries, they are not going to be displaced this year. Even if DL goes on DL, I’d guess Fox would come up to just ph and spot start IB.

He would be much more valuable, and have a lot better chance to move up, if he could handle LF, C, or 3B. All positions he has played before. This guy is never going to be a gold glover anywhere, but it seems to me 1B would be the position that gives him the least chance of being promoted.

by BatCubFan on Apr 28, 2009 10:42 AM CDT reply actions

If he could handle ANY of those positions, he'd...

have a multi-million dollar contract in the AL. If he was even close to league average at catcher, we wouldn’t need Koyie Hill.

I’ve seen Jake Fox play at Principal Park in Des Moines for two years now as a season ticket holder. He’s worthy of his defensive reputation. I’d be scared to death to see him in RF at Wrigley.

I'll pay for the gas,

but my point was this, I realize he’s bad at all those positions, but wouldn’t it be better if he was working at 3b, c, or lf than 1b?

by BatCubFan on Apr 28, 2009 12:15 PM CDT up reply actions

My understanding is...

…he’s spent time at all of those positions (not this season, but previously) and has simply been unable to stick at any of them. (Not sure about left field, actually, but definitely 3B and C.) I can only assume that’s because he was so bad defensively, the organization wasn’t going to spend time and resources trying to develop those skills.

by daver on Apr 28, 2009 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know if it's because he's that terrible

or the organization has others that play the position more capably. For instance, the I-Cubs could play Fox at third, but Scales can play it better. Plus, with Spears at second, it would retard his growth as a prospect to sit so that Fox can play third.

That’s just a small-size case, but probably part of the reason, as well.

I've seen him play 1B and RF this season...

He’s equally bad at both, but probably worse at RF. They have him playing practically on the warning track, which is probably because they assume (and he knows) that he can’t go back on balls. If we need depth at OF, we can always re-sign Jim Edmonds, right?

Put Board Game on the DL retro-active in order to call Fox up? Of course that would take Bradley being a team player. No matter what ti’s not happening that way. Fox should be given every chance and we should not be waiting around all Season to do so, not with us being performing so weakly. Times like this make it painful to watch.

If Bradley wasn't going to play tonight or in the near future then sure

but since he’s ready to play, that doesn’t work. However, if Lee needs time on the DL, then yes, Fox will probably get called up.

I'd be afraid to put him in the Infield.

Isn’t he an lifer Outfielder? Now all of a sudden we’re going to ask him to fill in @ 3rd or 1st. Sounds like on heck of a gamble to me. I say wait for a bases loaded situation with one out to try it. If he handles that he’s got my vote. (last parts a joke people).

Not a lifer

Fox was drafted as a catcher. He caught in high school and at Michigan. Might have played a touch of third his freshman year of high school.

The Cubs decided Soto was better behind the plate (not a bad decision there) and moved Fox around, trying to find a position. He’s played RF, LF and 1B since. There were thoughts about having him play some 3B in Spring Training, but they never amounted to much.

Well

If you’re not going to put him in the Outfield that’s about the only other place he’d feel comfortable. Seemingly the reasoning behind his experience Catching would back up him playing 3rd as for handling the heat, balls in the dirt, etc… What do you propose gives you comfort with him @ 1st? Given the Outfield, again, is not an option.

I never said I'm comfortable with him at first base.

Given what I’ve read, I’m not comfortable with him anywhere on the playing field besides maybe the batter’s box.

So, just to clarify, you would put a player at third base in a major league game who’s spent four minor league games – scattered over several years – at that position? That’s your answer?

Not sure where your confusion is there. Anyone want to guess who is hitting 3rd in the PCL at .411

Take a wild guess.

Must be rough hitting chip shots at 5,000 feet...

…though a part of me misses Matt Murton right now.

An "Orange Guy"

Who also has 5 stolen bases. Not to many homers though.

Ah yes, the Great Matt Friggin Murton

Mr. Minor League Journeyman. But alas, there are Cub fans around the world absolutely fascinated by players like Murton, Jason Dubois, Josh Kroeger, et al.

Murton is better than replacement...

…and I’d rather have him in the lineup against lefties than Hoffpauir.

She can be a tricky mistress...

… she has fooled me a time or two as well.

Jake Fox and Micah Hoffpauir can't play the field

Just like Brian Dopirak, Brendon Sing and Jason Dubois couldn’t play the field. Jim Hendry has fascination for scouting and developing big swing DHs. Fox has NO major league future unless he learns how to play at least one postion on the diamond to acceptable defensive standards. So far, he is failing on that front.

Hoffpauir can play first base.

No, he really can't

Did you watch Monday night? Not pretty at 1st base either. Frankly, I’m getting sick and tired of the distraction of Micah Hoffpauir. Why is it that the Cubs ALWAYS need to have a journeyman minor league pile o’ crap as a needless distraction? If its not Jason Dubois, then it’s Matt Murton or Micah Hoffpauir. Enough. Either you are capable enough to be on the Cub 25-man roster (MEANING YOU CAN ACTUALLY PLAY A POSITION CREDIBLY) or your ass should be permanently glued to Des Moines.

He looks OK to me at first...

…but the sample is still relatively small. Also, again, I’ve read at least a couple people who follow the minor leagues closely (toonsterwu, for one) state that Hoffpauir does, indeed, play a credible first base.

Are you referring to a specific play on Monday night?

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

The dive and flop on the ball strategy...

There are many floppers at 1B in the major leagues. We’re blessed with a good defensive 1B with Lee, but you can go down the list at sub-par first basemen with starting jobs: MIke Jacobs, Prince Fielder, Jason Giambi, Russell Branyan to name a few. Their defense is barely tolerable, yet they make it up with solid offense.
