Around SBN: Jeremy Lin And How The Pac-12 Missed Him

Apparently he's not too happy in Baltimore. He's versatile, can get on base a decent rate and plays all out

Head Injury worries me....

…but he beats Gathright. Plus, Baltimore owes us a player! LOL.

If he's really healthy

then sure. I’d rather spend money on our infield problem, tho.

By UZR

+4.3 at third
+2.5 at second
+4.0 in center
-3.6 in left
+24.8 in right

So he seems to be an excellent defender all around (those fluky ratings in the corners should probably be ignored). Probably average at third and second, above average in center, and excellent in the corners. CHONE only projects him to have a .307 wOBA, which is downright Gathright-esque.

Slight caveat:

He’s played less than 1,000 innings at every position except centerfield. Nonetheless, your point remains valid – he appears to be a solid defensive player. His projected OPS doesn’t look particularly inspiring, though. And. as the article mentions, he’s in the midst of recovering from yet another injury.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

He wants to play

he won’t be any happier here.

Whoa!

A ‘cancer’? That’s pretty strong. Not being liked and getting a DWI is not cancerous — unless you know more than you’re saying.

Freel is just the kind of skill set needed

the slate is clean here and Piniella and the crew is the kind of group to get a season out of him.

I heard various stories in Cincy

about how it was actually the players wives that hated him, as he always showed up to events intoxicated, dipping, and ready to hit on and offend all the women. Which sounds perfect for a clubhouse.

by KButler on Apr 29, 2009 8:22 AM CDT up reply actions

Was he double-dipping, too?

That’s like putting your whole mouth in the dip!

well then.....where are those stories?

by Ivy Walls on Apr 30, 2009 8:49 AM CDT up reply actions

No

Look at his stats please.

The Orioles will probably want too much for him too.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

by chilango2 on Apr 28, 2009 5:12 PM CDT reply actions

Do you have a problem with his career stats?

Or his numbers this year? Because, if it’s only this year, that’s not a very big sample size.

Depending on the price tag, how could he possibly not be preferable to Joey G?

by elgato on Apr 28, 2009 5:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Last year's were my main concern

And yes, the price was my second concern.

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

by chilango2 on Apr 28, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions

Gotcha

But wouldn’t he be better than Gathright — for the right price?

by elgato on Apr 28, 2009 5:23 PM CDT up reply actions

If the right price is:

-A week at HWSNBN’s Summer camp
-A half-eaten pretzel
-A case of Milwaukee’s Best
-A letter to Andy MacPhail thanking him for his continued support of our Chicago Cubs

One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.

by chilango2 on Apr 28, 2009 5:27 PM CDT up reply actions

how's about ...

for Rich Hill? IIRC, we still don’t have anything from the O’s from that deal.

I think Rich and a case of the Beast have about the same value.

I thought . . .

that was how we were getting, I mean nevermind.

by Villeslgr on Apr 29, 2009 11:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Baltimore would be delighted to dump his salary

He came back in an exchange of bad contracts (for Ramon Hernandez). He’s their Jose Ascanio.

by Wreckard on Apr 28, 2009 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions

might be a decent option

He’s at 33 years old this year, and from what I remember he seems to be a Reed Johnson clone. Not a bad option if he is replacing Joey G. The fact that he can play 2nd and a little bit of 3rd if needed is a plus but I think thats dancing around the real problem we have with not having a serviceable backup at SS

by bheidge on Apr 28, 2009 5:12 PM CDT reply actions

If I'm not mistaken

… that’s one of the reasons Aaron Miles was viewed as a good pickup. Not saying I agree with that reason.

by elgato on Apr 28, 2009 5:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I was a bigtime Ryan Freel fan...

a few years ago. Loved his good BA, good OBP, and his intangibles. BUT, he’s really fallen off and has health issues. I’d take a flyer for sure if he were on the waiver wire, but I can’t see it being worthwhile to give up talent to get him.

by kanderber on Apr 28, 2009 5:34 PM CDT reply actions

We already have Aaron Miles to suck ass at 6 positions

Why do we need Freel too?

Freel can keep Bradley company on the DL

Seems like he gets hurt at the drop of a hat. How many times has he been on the DL in his career?

by Rkfd Die Hard on Apr 28, 2009 7:59 PM CDT reply actions

Ryan Freel is better than anything we currently have on the bench outside of Reed Johnson

Heck yes I would want him. Our bench situation is rotten right now.

Better option than Gathright no doubt

ability to spot a few innings at 3B or 2B and the OF, would be the ticket

by Ivy Walls on Apr 29, 2009 7:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Can't speak for whether or not he's a clubhouse "cancer"...

but I’ve loved watching the guy play-he’s a “Reed Johnson type”; not flashy but a versatile, fundamentally solid player-I’d love to see him in a Cubs’ uniform.

by bluekoolaide on Apr 28, 2009 11:10 PM CDT reply actions

I don't kow too much about him

But I think we can remember many defensive gems he had against the Cubs two years ago. Hitting I don’t remember as much.

by ak123 on Apr 29, 2009 8:41 AM CDT reply actions

Well, the fact that he appears to play a decent third base...

…definitely catches my attention. For that reason alone, I’d like to hear that Hendry is looking into this.

But, as others have mentioned, Freel is hardly a slam dunk. His reaction to his current situation lends credence (why do I keep using that word lately?) to the notion that he’s a bit of a tool. And his recurrent injury woes may make giving up players for him a bad idea. Plus, as Josh pointed out above, if Freel wants to play regularly, he might be equally unhappy with the Cubs.

I've committed to tweeting about the Cubs for the rest of the season. (Does that sound as ridiculous as I think it does?) Anyway, if you're on Twitter, you can follow me here.

by daver on Apr 29, 2009 10:14 AM CDT reply actions

Freel is prone to injury because he throws his body around on the field

Freel plays with reckless (some what say stupid) abandon on the field. Hence the origin of a lot of his injury issues. All I know is that the guy can play several positions on the field and is decent defensively. To me he is Reed Johnson with an infield glove. We could certainly use a guy like him given the wretched nature of our bench. Throwing Freel into a winning situation should cure his pain in the ass insistence for playing time. Being a vital role player on the Cubs beats carrying Melvin Mora’s jockstrap in Baltimore.

For those not bright enough to grasp the fundamental underpinning of a message board, please take note that "EVERYTHING I state is an OPINION."

by BLou on Apr 29, 2009 11:05 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Those Cincy teams were piss-poor also, so being with a contender and in a full park every day would likely go a long way to alter his perspective.

Assuming the price is right, I say go get him.
