yes and I say we should fire Lou
he knows we can only score a certaqin amount of runs per series, and he used them all yesterday damn it
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
No such thing..
Score early, score often
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
Marmol is struggling
What a mess this turning out to be.

Those pitches must have been very outside.

Ball four.
We can’t blame it on overuse this time. 6-0 Diamondbacks. Lou comes out for Marmol. Shark to pitch. Bases still loaded, one out.

This is ridiculous
I guess he is in there so that when it matters he doesnt do this.

Remember when Marmol blew Harden's first win last year?
What was that, a seven run lead? Lou tried to let him pitch through that one, and it just got crazy. And it led to a completely lost month.
I’m just thankful that this one was on the road. Marmol was awfully sensitive about that last year.

the difference is Wood? Seriously?

by drewishdrewid on Apr 29, 2009 5:00 PM CDT up reply actions
The difference *is* Wood.
If Kevin Gregg were replacing Bobby Howry, we’d be a better team.
However, he replaced Kerry Wood – a step down.
The re-shuffling of chairs in the bullpen left the entire situation slightly worse. Except Marmol, who remains in the same role, and is hopefully getting his one bad month out of the way in one outing.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Compare Gregg at this point to Wood at this point
I think most of the brainiacs here were ready to crucify Wood at this point in the season last year. So I’m going to wait a bit before rendering any judgments.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Apr 29, 2009 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions
I think you're completely missing the point.
Why couldn’t we have Gregg and Wood?
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
$$$$$
Wood wanted long term contract guaranteed, Hendry said no
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
So offer arbitration. If he refuses, hey, free draft pick.
If he accepts, hey, 1-year deal!
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Also
do you really think Gregg would have gone somewhere with an established closer?
Oriole by nurture. Cub by marriage.
He came to the Cubs while we still owned Kerry Wood
And with Carlos Marmol as heir apparent.
Hell yes I think he’d go somewhere with an established closer. He wasn’t even the Marlins closer at the end of last year.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Hmm - lost the content of my post.
Why couldn’t we have Gregg and Wood? All we had to do was offer arbitration.
Moreover, no one was crucifying Wood on this site at this time last year – or in any year, frankly.
But especially at this time last year, when he was more or less unhittable. I think he allowed a run in 2 total innings in April last year – he was 2-0 with 4 saves and another 4 scoreless outings. The league was hitting .150 off of him, and he had 12 K to 2 walks.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
Agreed....
BUT…instead of “pointing” at specific players….. look at the team…the offense is way down….and the pitching…while decent…is NOT as good as last year
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
Its April
see us again in May, late May at that.
Oriole by nurture. Cub by marriage.
Agree with that too....
Just observing
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
honestly, Marquis is a bigger difference here
Wood being a closer DOES NOT fix the middle relief issue, so its moot.
Marquis allows Cottssucker to be DFA’d and Marshall to be swing man. Marquis also was not as bad as so many say or think, he was a solid #5 who was over paid by Hendry (Not Marquis’ fault)
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
HE ate up a lot of innings...
and would have beeen a 3/4 for a lot of teams in the NL last year…
AND he was the “ANTI-DUNCAN”
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
Wood is not any "mesiah"...
Ask cleveland how they felt about the 3 run homer the other night…
The bullpen wasn’t that good last year.
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
Don't you get it, KC?

"I'm not much of a chemistry guy, you know. Chemistry to me is a pinch-hit double with the bases loaded"--Jim Frey, Chicago Tribune, 1985.
There's a fanpost about it.
Derrek Lee basically disagreed, saying that he “doesn’t see it.”
To which I would respond “well, that makes sense.”
To which he would respond, “what are you getting at?”
To which I would point behind him and then run away. But I’d totally tell it differently afterward, and Soriano would think it was cool.
MLBMilestone.com - following the numbers to Cooperstown
And yesterday they didn't look lethargic
So … I wouldn’t put a lot of stake in what he said, other than as a motivational tool.

That Soriano actually said the team is the best he’s ever seen, and we’re going to win 140 games, but in his ledge jumper mind, he heard something completely different?

An inference
But, given the very specific nature of Pat Hughes’ comments I knew he was talking about the recap
thanks
i didn’t hear the exchange.

You know what. At least the bulls are playing. At least they're competitive.
Same with the Blackhawks.
take the blackhawks
and keep the bulls. There is ZERO chance that the Bulls advance.
the hawks at least are legit.

I like the Bulls a lot.
Hell, I even like the Cubs a lot! :-)

baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
i'm not one to believe in conspiracy theories
BUT
do you really think the NBA would let that happen?

it's 20 friggin games
10-10……….yeah they look bad but it truly is a loooooooooooooooongggggggg season
it is a marathon not a sprint
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
We hear that all the time--
It’s the mantra of the slow starter. Man, Dusty liked to say that while resting half the team to get ABs for Macias and Neifi.
Truth is, April wins count just as much as August wins.

I will not argue that fact
but its not like we have 10 games left and are are out 9 games from the Wild Card
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
The very definition of average
Not good. Not bad.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Apr 29, 2009 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions
I don't think the Cubs had average in mind
when they shelled out $140 million for this team.
And I know the Yankees didn't
when they shelled out considerably more.
Thankfully, the season isn’t 20 games in length.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Apr 29, 2009 5:22 PM CDT up reply actions
true ...
though the Yankees probably have more resources to shore things up.
They've always had those resources
and it hasn’t done them much good recently.

Are you a relative of Heilman?
Starting pitching is not the problem with this team.

is the concern right now.

that he IS Aaron Heilman.

As I said...
Can’t expect to score runs when 7/9’s of the starting lineup is hitting less than .220
The best defense is a good offense.....Lou Pinella...still hasn't managed the Cubs to a post season win. D. Lee still doesn't have a post seasson RBI for Cubs...ditto for Soriano
aaron
has been pitching well. he would not squander the opportunity, were he granted it…

how in the world is
having heilman start going to help?
He last started in 2005. And he was awful.
Why take away one of the only useful bullpen arms on the team? Starting pitching is one of the few things that is not broken.

That doesn't look like very good pitching.

Do you think Marmol is still hurt?

debatable
perhaps lingering injury, but he also tends to be wild when he hasnt pitched in a few days.

I hope your summary includes some suggestions about what the Cubs ought to do to fix things/shake things up. I know Hendry and Lou probably won’t read it, but I’d be interested in your take.
what we will need
is health and some bullpen help and we’ll be ok. Well…….that and a SS
seriously?!
Unless I missed something (I’m not watching the game), how can you possibly think Theriot’s the problem — or, a problem that ranks among the Cubs’ worst? As for health, the only guy out right today is Aramis.
I agree on the bullpen.
the hate by some for Theriot is a joke
they make him out to be the worst in the league, and he is far from it.
baseball is a game of outs......pop out, ground out, line out, pitch out, strike out, fly out, and Fox and Bud's favorite black out
Right.
He’s far from the greatest, but, at least for me, the Theriot hate is a exaggerated.

Lee, Soto and Bradley need to hit a lot better than they are. I can’t imagine where we’d be right now with Sori and Fukudome.
Right
Water finds its own level, at least with Lee and Bradley. Soto, however, might be a bigger problem. They need him to produce.

We might be witnessing his decline.

I hate to say it, but we seem to have been witnessing it for a while

I realize that's a popular meme
