Slightly OT - D-Backs broadcasters
Now I'm not sure if this is a kosher fanpost, and I apologize ahead of time if it is not; and by all means remove it if isn't.
However, being an Arizona resident for quite sometime now, and having foregone my beloved Extra Innings (stupid economy), I was forced to view Monday's game on FSAZ with our good ol buddy Mark Grace and Daron Sutton broadcasting.
The first camershot showed a large group of Cubs fans enjoying some cold ones outside the park and the first words Daron Sutton utters is "Well, at least their money spends well in OUR ballpark" And he also made an emphasis that "Yes folks we are in Arizona." For me, their was a certain "chip on his shoulder" kind of attitude when he said these things. Oh, and their keys to the game were "Slam the glove" which referred to Ted's glove slam in the NLDS TWO years ago. Sutton also made it a point to remind people that they had swept us in that series, TWO years ago.
Second point, my brother was listening to last nights game on the radio at work and he tells me that the radio guy said, more than once, and while Z was pitching a nice game, that "Zambrano's numbers tonight aren't as good as Haren's were last night" and when the game was nearing the end he mentioned that we hadn't won a world series, 100+ years, that we had been swept by the D-Backs and Dodgers, blah blah blah
Finally, I did switch over last night to peak at what Sutton and Grace were saying as we were smacking them around and they were talking about FOOD. Last night, all they could talk about was Haren, but turn the tables and they talk about FOOD. I'd also like to add that I think Grace is a little over the top with stuff like "Oh Daniel Haren, you stop that, you stop that right now" when he was striking a Cubs hitter out.

Maybe they kept referring to things from 2 years ago
because the D-Backs simply haven’t done anything since that’s worth bragging about since then?

Few ex-Cub stars
have been a classless, irritating and yes, graceless than Mark Grace.
I’m sure some scrubs have been worse, but I’m hard-pressed to think of any major figure in recent Cubs history who has been as classless to the franchise than Grace.
There is no such thing as an ugly female breast
Yeah,
And it’s a shame because he had such a cute butt back in the day… ;) I used to have such a crush on him as a young girl. Not so much nowadays.
If Grace bothers you ...
… imagine how Sox fans like me feel when Fox has him in the booth at Sox games.
"On September 26, 2003, Grace announced his retirement from baseball. He continues his involvement in the game as a television color commentator for the Diamondbacks and for FOX Saturday Baseball. Grace’s trademark unusual style and off-the-wall terms (such as “slumpbuster” and “never-say-die-mondbacks” as well as "GAS!" whenever a pitcher strikes out a hitter with a fastball) bring a unique quality to the Diamondbacks’ broadcast team. Grace has stated a desire to coach a major league team in the future. He was considered for the Diamondbacks’ managerial position following the 2004 season, but the Diamondbacks hired Bob Melvin instead." - Wikipedia
How is Grace using Hawk’s expression, “GAS!” unique?

Funny, but...
… the Wiki claimed that the expression was unique to Grace. Hardly.

Announcers
Many of them are homers… thats just the way it is. Some are over the top, but you need to understand that they are appealing to a home market. I was listening to part of the Reds-Braves game on Saturday on XM and heard Jeff Brantley (w/ Marty Brennaman) and this guy who was so well respected as an ESPN studio guy has become a total homer who sounds like an idiot. Even well respected guys are homers.
But what you should try realizing is what opposing fans probably think when they hear Ron Santo. Even in close games he and Pat talk about things like The Addams Family and Ron’s hair piece. What many people love Ron for is likely what Dbacks fans love Sutton and Grace for, what Red fans love Brennaman and Brantley for, and so on.
I agree.
I think some people get a little to angry that opposing announcers kind of root for their team to win. I’m sure a lot of other teams fans hate WGN because all they do is talk about the cubs.
yup
And I would recommend that Cub fans never listen to Cards radio broadcasts. Al Hrabosky, in addition to sounding like a complete illiterate, is obnoxious. But again, I imagine that opposing fans think the same of Santo.
I agree
I had to listen to the game 2 weeks ago Saturday on MLB Gameday (stupid MLB blackouts) and it was pretty brutal until Ron and Pat’s feed came through.

I live in the southwest, so I see many a D-Backs game on TV when the Cubs are not on, and thats just it, for the franchise the D-backs are, they need a pretty thick layer of homerism from their announcers. IMO wouldn’t mind less of that from Pat & Ron or Len & Bob in Cubs games but I’ll take what I can get. I also have heard on several occasions, both when the D-backs were playing the Cubs and other teams, Grace make positive remarks about his time as a Cub and current Cubs players/teams. While its not by any means my favorite style, I can’t fault him or Sutton for their goofy homer style of announcing — it seems to be what their market wants. If you notice they do cater quite a bit to young kids/families/ and very casual fans.
"Ask Dad. He'll know. And on the off chance he doesn't, he'll make something up"
Actually, many fans of other teams
get a big kick out of listening to Pat and Ron. I subscribed to XM for a couple of years and discovered how many fans Pat and Ron have acquired from fans of other teams. These are not Cub fans but enjoy listening to Pat and Ron’s broadcasts.

Well,
at least Mark Grace is good for one thing: Describing Jonathan Broxton.
The food thing you can excuse them for.
Astros announcers did the same thing earlier this year against the Cubs when we blew them out. A lot of teams do it. I mean, when the team you’re broadcasting has essentially lost the game by the third you gotta find something to fill two more hours with, and commenting on the crowd usually does the trick.
Everything else you mentioned is petty and par for the course when it goes to referencing the Cubs. I truly believe it stems from a deep-rooted jealousy in just how much we Cub fans love our team.
That’s the reason I’m still shocked to see so much anti-Cub clothing in St Louis. Hey guys, your team has done some AMAZING things. Celebrate those! I wear clothing accentuating my love for the Cubs, not my hatred for other teams.
I just don’t get it.

And I like talking with civil fans of other teams….at the risk of painting with a broad brush, Brewers fans seem to have a gargantuan chip on their shoulders. While it’s good-natured with most Cardinal fans, a lot of Brewers fans at Miller Park take it personally when someone roots for another team – especially the Cubs.

I agree completely
Go to a Cubs-Brewers game at Miller Park and a Cubs-Cardinals game at Busch Stadium. There’s a noticeable difference.
Now, I’ve met a lot of great Brewers fans at Miller. Very friendly, up on their baseball. But I see a lot more idiots and hear a lot more “Cubs suck” stuff there than I do at Busch.
by Not Bruce Froemming on Apr 30, 2009 12:11 AM CDT up reply actions
I think the reason for this is...
… the length of the rivalry. There are Cubs and Cardinals fans who have grown up for generations with their parents, grandparents, etc. knowing the rivalry. It’s gone up and down, and become (mostly) civil.
The Cubs/Brewers rivalry is new. Until the last 2 years the Brewers have been (mostly) bad and the Cubs have been (mostly) good. I think this has generated feelings of jealousy among Brewers fans. As time goes by maybe this will chill out some.

Sounds like Gracie was being baseball's Stacey King last night
And let’s remember that in terms of ball parks being invaded in droves by Cubs fans, Daron Sutton made a lateral move. His previous job was with FSN…Wisconsin. Yeah that’s right. He may encounter less Cubs fans down there for that series then he did when he was doing play-by-play for the Crew, but still…
Personally, I always liked Sutton’s broadcasts. There’s just something about the Cubs brings out the inferiority complex in a lot of teams.

We [I] make fun of the glove slam because it's meaningless now
and Lilly has shown he’s better than that. They can’t let it go because they mustn’t have much else to talk about.
We’re spoiled here. Pat&Ron and Len&Bob are phenomenal, plus they’re great cheerleaders. Every game—I feel as if I’m having a conversation with these guys. So, scrape a couple bucks, save on dry cleaning and get your MLB Extra Innings package back.
One day I hope to come up with something worthy of this space.
small/mid market team...
…small/mid market announcers. ’nuff said.
Be glad who you have calling CUBS games in one of the greatest sports cities on the planet.
Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.
Having Extra Innings, I've watched Grace and Sutton quite a bit
and I honestly don’t mind them. In fact, there are several other announcing teams I find far less entertaining. And, for what it’s worth, Len and Bob have mentioned the NLDS sweep from two years ago in both broadcasts so far. And why shouldn’t they? When the Cubs and Dbacks play, we are all reminded of that. As far as the food reference, their team was being blown out. Their fans that were tuning in enjoyed the entertainment as opposed to the whining, i’m sure.
"Yes, dear. You're right. I'm sorry." -Bob Brenly
And Len and Bob
kept talking about the nachos. Didn’t bug me, but it was definitely a food reference. Oh and staying hydrated in Arizona was another good food related Len and Bob chat.

Oh and how many times
have we all seen the shots of fans grilling on the rooftops and Len and Bob commenting on how good it looks? Food is part of the ballpark experience, and announcers talk about it all the time, so I don’t understand why the poster was so annoyed with Grace and Sutton doing this last night.

That whole moth episode was a waste of time
How could Bob and Len, in one of the best offensive outputs in the last many games continue to follow Ted Lilly and his stupid pet moth. What a gigantic waste of time. Shouldn’t those people be doing their jobs and explaining the game? They just hate the diamondbacks.
/sarcasm
Nothing in your complaint is particularly offensive and if you don’t like the AZ broadcasters, that’s fine and I respect your opinion. But Mark Grace was a jackass when he was playing for the cubs, let alone broadcasting for the d-backs – it’s the guy he is. Just because he’s with a different outfit isn’t any reason to expect him to change his personality.

I concede
to the points made about the food, that may have been a point of anger on my part.
And I suppose I should be fair and say it may just be my perception of their tone, especially Sutton’s tone, when describing the Cubs.
As far as Len and Bob mentioning the NLDS, I wasn’t aware they had. But still, I found that Sutton and Grace used it as if it had a bearing on this regular season series, as if their triumph two years ago puts them ahead of the Cubs this year, and in this series.
I really respect everyone’s opinion, but for me personally I can’t stand Sutton and Grace. I find them childish, and unprofessional at times.
I respect your opinion as well
Ya know, I still remember Brenneman (REDS) a couple of years ago when he made a few snide remarks about Cubs’ fans. I had never been a big fan of his announcing even before that, but since then I really don’t like him. Anybody else remember the game in Cincy? The Cubs had come back to take the lead (I believe it was on a Fontenot single up the middle) and he was bitching that there were so many Cubs fans in the stands. Then, the Reds came back in the bottom of the inning and he said “And to all those Cubbie fans that were hooting and hollering a couple of minutes ago, where did you go?” Now, that is childish and unprofessional. So, perhaps that is why but I just don’t have a problem with Grace and Sutton.

Sutton
I actually did hear him today and thought he was a bit odd. Now maybe I don’t hear alot of broadcasters, but I just thought he came across as a ‘know it all’ and you know the first rule of announcing is that when you say things ’don’t’ happen they are going to happen in the very near future lol…I’m sure he gets burned by this constantly.
As for Gracie, I like Grace, the only complaint I have about him as the same I have about John Kruk, to hear them talk you would think they both only had a cup of coffee in the majors not actual stars of their day lol

I have always liked Grace
as a Cub and as a D Back. His broadcasting style doesn’t bother me and at least he shows passion for the game from the booth. Sutton is so-so. You can’t bitch about Grace and not bitch about Harry or Ron. I love all three. When I listen to them or listened to Harry, I was listening to their love of the game and their personalities, not looking for perfection. I used to enjoy listening to Steve Stone, but now he seems grating. Brenneman has a chip on his shoulder against the Cubs and will rip them at every opportunity.
When you have to fill air time during games where your homeys are getting their butts handed to them, sure the talk will wander. Everyone does it. NBD.
Most of you have heard the broadcasters from the other teams and I think you would agree that they are all homers and most of them are worse than Grace.
"WGN, Channel 9 Cubs Baseball, Excitingly, Importantly, Dramatically Yours." - Jack Brickhouse
Sometimes I think people forget
Baseball broadcasts, more than any other sport, are about entertainment. Not just about the game.
There’s a lot of down time between pitches. A blowout can render play by play irrelevant. You have to be able to talk about stuff other than the game itself and be able to hold the listeners’ attention.
Now, some broadcasters are a little ridiculous. Al Hrabosky and Dan McLaughlin on the Cardinals’ TV broadcasts rip the Cubs every chance they get, even when they’re not playing the Redbirds. But that’s part of the schtick, too, I guess.
I listen to a lot of the radio guys on Gameday, and Pat and Ron are right up there at the top as far as entertaining. As much as I dislike Marty Brennaman, I think the Reds games are pretty fun to listen to, too. He certainly isn’t shy about offering an opinion.
Listen to those two, then listen to, say, a Rangers game, and you’ll hear what I mean.

Another story about Sutton the putz
A catholic church in Kenosha has a “sports night” banquet every winter, honoring local athletes and fund raising. Sports celebs from the Packers, Bears, Cubs, Brewers and Badgers attend. In 2004, I was there and Sutton was the emcee. He made a Bartman joke, thinking it would do well in front of a crowd of (bitter) Brewers fans. Kenosha probably has more Cubs fans than Brewers and White Sox combined . . . the lame joke did not go over well and the surprise on his face was great.
Later, Najeh Davenport either made fun of him or didn’t laugh at a different joke (hey, it was 5 years ago) and Sutton made a “4th and 26” crack (in reference to the NFC Championship game that the Eagles beat the Packers in) — with no humor in his voice.
Sutton just comes across as a bitter little man, and there seems to be reason why he doesn’t ply his trade in a bigger market – and won’t get the opportunity to do so. The best description I can think of is, he’s a Matt Vasgergian wanna be — and I’m no fan of the latter.

Phoenix IS a big market
It’s #12. Sutton left the #35 market (Milwaukee) to go to Phoenix.
http://www.tvb.org/rcentral/markettrack/us_hh_by_dma.asp
In any event, this is a subject that has been talked to death. Most teams’ announcers are very biased. Sutton sounds the same in PHX as he did in Milwaukee.
Thom Brennaman did the reverse move — left PHX to go to #34 Cincinnati — doing that, because of his father.
Sutton, Vasgergian….all from the ESPN “I’m too hip for the room” school of broadcasting.
The difference is — the ESPN guys can pull it off without being knuckleheads.

However, they pay talent large-market salaries in PHX, commensurate with the market size (SD does not) so that is part of my consideration….but attitude, as you describe, is a different consideration. Detroit and Phoenix may be similar markets, size-wise but probably have different standards….

There will be more 'fun' tonight
If you live outside of Chicago, and are on EI. Since this is a WCIU game v. the Marlins, those are not on the package. We will be treated to Fox/South.
Shanghai, I understand. The days of Vin Scully-type announcers, working for the home team are gone. This is not to say all announcers of the past were playing it down the middle — certainly, Harry was never an example of that. But, Scully, Harry Kalas, Ernie Harwell…favoring the home team, never insulted the opposition and their fans.
The modern pbp guy — many times, on directions from the team — really goes for the ‘homer’ stripes. (After all, almost all of these guys are paid by the team) The home fans eat this stuff up.
We can be thankful that Len & Bren, who do favor the Cubs — are never spiteful or hateful. There are still a few teams like them — the Angels team comes to mind…the Indians duo, another…and now, the new TV fellow here in SD — Mark Neely, is giving me hope that he’s following that path.
To my taste, Matt Vasgergian was unwatchable — as he is Daren Sutton x 10. But, most Padres fans I talk with miss the “entertaining” antics of Vasgergian. This market wants “extra value” with games…..therefore, with a giveaway trinket at almost every game, when they are home, they still want more than the game.
by San Diego Smooth Jazz Man on Apr 30, 2009 11:07 AM CDT reply actions
I think
that part of Len and Bob’s lack of insults towards the opposing team may have something to do with the fact that they are often broadcasted nationally and respect the fact that other team’s fans may be watching. Also at least Bob has been around the league and been with others teams so he should not have a particular bias, especially with a national audience.
Oriole by nurture. Cub by marriage.
Again, with Len and Bren
it’s simple — they understand what professionalism is all about.
With E-I, ALL of these games are now available on a national basis. These guys know that they are being watched in other markets….I heard Sutton make such a remark on last Sunday’s game….when that D-backs game was the only one in MLB still going…
“….Gracie, do you know that THIS is the only game currently in action in Major League Baseball… we are being viewed around the world….”
Grace then gurgled some inane, and the game went on….
The point is — anybody else watching out-of-market is not really important, in the scheme of things. The home team broadcasters (in most cities) pander to the max to the home audience.
